AI GeneratedTyphoon Jangmi is approaching Taiwan, bringing strong winds and heavy rain, particularly to northern regions like Keelung. The storm has caused flight cancellations, mass evacuations in flood-prone rural areas, and one fatality. While the government has suspended work and classes, some businesses remain open and citizens continue to gather at the coast despite warnings from the Coast Guard.
As typhoon Jangmi gradually nears Taiwan,
its impact is being felt across the north of the country.
We now go live to our reporter Sandy Chi,
who is on the ground at the northern port city of Jilong.
Sandy, how's everything looking there?
Well, Tiffany, as you can see here along the Jilong coast,
we can really feel the forces of the strong winds and heavy rain.
And now this comes after the outer edges
of the typhoon reached Taiwan earlier this morning.
On Friday, more than a thousand people
were evacuated from rural areas in Taiwan
that were threatened by flash floods,
and hundreds of flights have been cancelled.
And earlier on Thursday, one person died after being washed out
to sea off Lanyu Island in southern Taiwan.
Here's the latest from the Central Weather Administration.
My view remains the same: as it moves to the offshore waters of the northeast,
from afternoon to evening, the typhoon's movement speed will slow down,
and it may even exhibit irregular movements, such as looping.
So classes and work have been suspended in most parts of Taiwan,
including here in Keelung.
And despite that, many restaurants
and shops are still open for business.
And even with the heavy rain,
there were also people standing along the coastline to watch the waves.
I will be careful, because I will keep a safe distance
from the typhoon, so that I can see where it is dangerous.
Coast Guard officers were also on site here,
telling the people about the dangers and urging them to go home.
So Sandy, how are people there preparing for the typhoon?
Well, earlier this morning, we spoke
to some seafood restaurant workers, and this is what they said.
So the typhoon
expected to continue
moving north, coming
closer towards
Taiwan, bringing
strong winds and heavy rain for the next day or so.
Thanks, Sandy. That's Sandy Chi reporting live from Geelong.
