James Kaufman with a news report today.
Mr. Kaufman, JPL, our Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has just announced
a new, fairly large, near-Earth object, a space rock.
It's set to fly between Earth and the Sun at some point tomorrow.
It's a fairly large rock,
between 40 and 50 feet in diameter, they think.
You can see it's in the inner solar system here.
Let's zoom in and take a look.
Mars and inside of Mars is considered
the inner solar system, let's see it's going to just about
join Earth here tomorrow. Now 2026 JD1, it's the name
of this near-Earth object, space rock, meteor
and again it's about 40 to 50 feet diameter
it's moving at a very good clip at about 14.2
kilometers per second, uh we're going to see
if it's going to go closer to the moon than Earth
let's hope it stays away from both celestial objects, all right
this is a crazy one, looks
like the solution date is today, May 10th, very
very late on the day, that 19.7, 128 observations
over a one-day period, seen from only April 9th, not seen today.
Condition code 7.
A condition code of 0 means they know exactly where the rock is going.
Condition code of 9 means they have no idea.
And obviously 7 is much closer to a 9 than a 0.
So there's a lot of questions about the path of this rock
and how large it is and the speed of this rock.
It was spotted by our automatic software, our AI software,
and, well, we're going to get some close approach data
and see when they think it's going
to bend between the Earth and the Moon here.
Again, 2026 JD1, newly discovered,
just released to the public.
All right, they were not able to extrapolate much,
but they do have the two flybys here,
and it looks like it's going
to be about 0.002 astronomical units from Earth,
and about 0.003 astronomical
units from the moon,
so it's just going to go right in between the two.
JPL says a close approach for Earth's 12.04 UTC time,
and we're going to have to take 0.7 there.
About 5 in the morning tonight, 5.04 in the morning,
if they have it done fairly well
and five hours after that it'll be approaching the moon
again minimal distances here are 0.002 astronomical
units and 0.003 astronomical units and it's moving
right at 14 kilometers per second all right
so there you have it folks newly discovered
2026 JD1, will be passing, hopefully, by Earth
here in, well, about 12 hours, and hopefully
it will stay away from the Moon and Earth.
Again, the condition code of 7 is the only thing that worries me,
meaning they don't
feel like they have really good information concerning
this near-Earth object, space rock
or meteor.
thanks for joining us folks please give us a thumbs up
and always remember that anything's possible
bizarro world
