Hey, everyone out there.
Thank you so much for tuning in to another Addicted Fishing Podcast.
Got just me and Cam tonight in the studio.
Jason's on the way.
But have you been fishing much?
Yeah.
I have not, Ben.
Yeah, that's all I have been doing, regrettably.
Yeah, like Cam's, the first year in a long time,
Cam skipped out on muzzleloader season.
He had some really, like,
cool bass stuff happening around the same time.
And then on top of that, like,
they gave us a wild coho retention in the river.
And so it was kind of hard to be like,
I'm going to take some time off and go.
elk hunting when you're just
a little bit busy you know anything worth doing is worth doing right
yeah so it's kind of like i mean i could probably
i could have probably shot up to camp for a couple
days and did that it's like gosh i'm gonna kind of bank
and hedge my bet on world war three oh
excuse me i meant uh modern rifle elks which uh
so funny that you say that because we you were asking
me like are you still on elk and so i'm like
when we're doing a couple pushes in these sections
to alder patches and we're getting
on hunting now guys sorry i know some of you guys love hunting but
we're doing these little pushing this alder patch
on saturday opening day of rifle it's like 2 p.m
and i've been getting a bunch of deer on my trail cameras
and so i we i'm just gonna push through
the alder patch and be loud like i took a stick
and i was like smashing stuff just trying to get
deer to come out and i get to the very end of the alder patch
and i'm like about to pop out into the
opening and i hear and i'm like what the heck
and i look up and a five point bull elk stands up
literally i could have jumped on his back he stands up right
in front of me and he looks back
and he goes and he realizes what i
am and he just freaking bolts out into the clear cut and i get on
the radio i'm like colt colt there's
a bull elk coming out into the clear cut you should blast
him and i was joking obviously um but yeah
and then he ran out into the clear cut stopped in
the clear cut looked back yeah like
so yeah we still we still have we still got them on cameras
and like we went into one of the walk-in only areas
and there was like tons of new fresh track
all over the sand and they're playing
so i think it's still a lot of potential but yeah before we
uh dive too deep into this podcast
because trey just reminded me today's podcast guys is brought
to you by the sports shows is brought to you by the sports shows
so how many of you guys out there if
you're listening watching how many of you guys come
to the shows drop a comment on the podcast
drop some comments let us know if you come to the sports shows at all
but this year guys i'm really
really excited i think cam is too
because we all agree as a as a team that we might have made
the best movie we've ever made well i mean here's
the thing we don't we haven't seen it yet but just
knowing after doing seven eight ten whatever
the hell the number is now of these things just kind
of knowing what happened knowing what we got knowing how good Sean
is with the edit it's going
to be the best steelhead movie ever made period hard stop
and it is and it's i we've we just did
things and went places like i'm telling you it
is going to be the attraction of the sports show
sorry trey it's going to be just letting you know
uh oh he knows it will be that's why he has a
steelhead movie it will be the best movie
the best event the best i'm telling you this is not
the year to sleep on it no it's gonna be incredible
and we'll have tickets and stuff launching guys
Sometime in November, we're going to try to really promote and go hard
at this thing for four months, three months, or however long we can.
But come to the sports shows, not just for our movie, guys.
Every day of the week, there's really cool stuff happening,
lots of cool events, lots of seminars every day.
Are you doing any seminars this year?
Oh, yeah, I think so.
I don't know.
Do I have the schedule?
I haven't seen anything.
Cam will be doing some seminars.
Usually, a few of the addicted guys
are doing seminars at the shows, guys.
So again, mark your calendars, Washington show,
Portland show, central Oregon show.
Come to them guys.
Get on the website, get the dates.
There's going to, I think they're doing some
pre-sale tickets that are going to launch
sometime in November.
Is that correct?
Trey?
There'll be like, there may be like last year,
I think they did a black Friday sale.
Just try to pay attention early guys.
Cause if you buy your tickets ahead
of the show versus just walking in and getting them
at the ticket counter, you can, there's some
deals out there that you can take advantage
of.
So shout out to the shows.
thanks for always supporting Addicted
and we're happy to be partners with those guys and it's
going to be an epic show season it's going
to be i'm telling you get your damn movie tickets now
yeah i'm just telling you right now don't mess around
so now we can talk about fishing what
people actually tune in for yeah yeah i mean it's
been you've been so yeah how was the wild
co thing was it epic out there it wasn't i would
not call it epic ed was really good for hatchery
co which was like ridiculous like i swear like
the last three days i fished killed like eight
fish a day i think i caught like one wild maybe every day it
was like mainly hatchery fish which
is really weird but the wilds are showing up later well
that's what i'm assuming i'm hoping
because like kind of with going with with what's going
on in the weather because we were supposed
to have this super wet warm fall and because of El Nino
which is completely showing to be just dry
the driest ever so i don't know where all that came
from because El Nino's are supposed to be
warmer and wetter and i read that article
and read those articles for three months did you not
read those two clip yeah warmer warmer wetter well warmer sure they got
so they're half right
anyways barely any precipitation remember i don't know
if you remember but i think
it was like three years ago it rained every day
in october yeah that was probably a little more
than that four years i remember that because
that was one of the years that i finally started taking
like pop off up on my home river
and he's like god i love twitching yeah he never got this every
it was probably a little bit longer than
that because it's been it's funny because i i tell
people when i'm doing like late coho trips
and i'm like we we rarely really get to go like doing
the twitching that we like to do because it don't rain
in october i've said that for years like it's
like we're going on here like four or five
or it just it's global warming yeah yeah i mean i mean
i mean it's supposed to be an ice age
and then warming and now it's just climate change so
yeah we're i mean what this is what i think you
know how they always say now i'm gonna just go
down a tinfoil hat oh boy conspiracy theory here we go
but you know they say that like under the
ice wall and under antarctica like there's like cities frozen
and things from like thousands and
thousands of years ago that's part of what i think
is just happening in the world is just changing
the world evolves well we somehow
and the world changes a little ice age in like 1700 and then
we had another one few years we had another one
to thousands of years before that and we warmed
up from that it sure as hell wasn't
from my car yeah yeah you know i do think things are changing
obviously like we're on we're on quite a streak
and then this year is just definitely the epitome
but i just love just you know it's kind of like with salmon forecasts
and and things like that
it's like oh the experts warmer weather weather oh yeah yeah it's like
so that's a good spot on
record got it that's a good spot to transition
into because with the dry no rain comes a lot of
no fish like you don't get as much fish movement at all
and we see it a lot in all of our rivers
and what i always find interesting is then
the state comes in and then closes everything
when they really don't know what's there right right
so what happens is is is you know the state
have this they have this term they call them paper fish
and all these forecasts because just
coincidentally today they're closing all the Willapa
and all the Grays Harbor streams and
that's pretty monumental that's probably 30
different streams that they're closing down
as of october 24th due to no rain
because those fish they're forecasted to come but the problem
is they lock up in the lower river anglers can
still catch them they can still find them they
can get on them but because what the hatchery
is used to seeing as far as escapement whether it's
over a dam into a hatchery
or whatever they're not seeing they're seeing zeros right now because
the fish are just locking up well
then they get afraid that the anglers are sitting there catching
them and to their point there is probably some merit
to that it can be like shooting fish in
the barrel if you do the work if you find
the right spot never mind the netting that they'll
be doing still but regardless of all
that let's just ignore that fact uh but it's the one thing
the state you know they can control and it's the sportsman
and it's the first it's always the first
shoe to drop it's always the first thing to take a hit
so yeah we're going to take the hit on that
But it is also pretty monumental how little rain we have.
It is crazy, but what I don't understand is
why don't they just take all user groups off the rivers?
Oh, well, come on.
Well, you're asking...
Because they can't?
You're asking...
I know, but is it like a legal thing?
Like they're not allowed?
Like they can't just shut the river down?
I mean, I'm pretty sure they could, would, and should,
but whether or not our co-managers and things like that
want to have that happen is another story.
Yeah.
so that's something i've never understood
with the netting like i'm not i'm not this anti-netting
guy like i'm in the of the mindset of like
if there's abundance let's net them like let's eat
them let's do it if there's abundance right
or if you're taking or do it right or if you're right
if you're taking from it you should be putting it back exactly
but what i've never understood
especially in like our steelhead fisheries it's like we have all
these depressed steelhead runs
and then they just still net them and they don't
and in some situations they don't put anything
back i don't get that yeah i feel like any user group us included even
on wild steelhead i.e
broodstock programs like it's pretty obvious we need
to be putting anything we're taking back and
even if we are catching release we are taking a very small amount
or not not a drop in the bucket
compared to what a net does
but at the same time like we need to be responsible users and we should
be putting back what we're taking out yeah from that because
or else these stocks depress and
then we will we all know where that goes yeah every one
of every one of you listening has had
a favorite steelhead fishery that's gone by
the wayside. They closed all the upper ones
this year.
Again, every person...
They're closing Idaho, dude. They're closing Idaho for like the first
time in like, I don't even know how long.
Every person listening to this podcast,
unless they've only been steelhead fishing
for a year, has experienced
the loss of a fishery that they used to participate
in. 100%. So annoying.
And it all can be fixed.
But we're hiring 300
other employees at the department to do
this and we're not funding hatcheries got it anyways
so yeah stupid yeah we can talk all
about that as we want but the reality
is right now unfortunately no one can control the weather
no one can control the rain however
and what we saw today is there's a lot of fish still
in like the big water there's still a lot of fish
in Columbia um but it's closed right still
open until October 31st it's open for just hatchery coho okay
but kind of going back to
my other point we weren't seeing this huge amount
of a giant influx of wild coho which is hilarious
because of course when you can keep them you can't
catch them we'll go out to the ocean in July and
see how many you'll throw back yeah like all of them
so it is kind of crazy that like yeah that's
the way it works out whatever
but uh it is kind of funny that we got that season but i do i am
just kind of hoping that what we were seeing
and what we were catching because i fish i'm just
gonna say it just fish below the mouth
of the Cowlitz fish below that for a reason there's you know
thousands and thousands and thousands
of hatchery fish they're going to end up in that river so i
don't generally like to fish above it
not to mention too like i don't want to say what i
wanted to say there but i like fishing a little closer
to the ocean when you can yeah i mean you
get fresher fish they got sea lice all over them
I mean they're they're awesome for the clients to
take home so there are still opportunities
in like you said those lower stretches of the rivers
the Columbia River where those fish are kind
of like locking up a little bit but say like what
one thing I think we don't talk about
is what other opportunities you know because it is kind
of depressing right like a lot of our fisheries are closing
but then you know like one thing I've
been doing a lot more is catch and release sturgeon fishing I did
and and I see you going up and doing
the fall bass fishing like a lot
of people think oh it's winter and it's fall the bass don't eat
it's like no this is like one of the best times to catch them
so as much as as much as Nick and I
went up there and tugged on coho
and chinook today like we spent probably three quarters
of the day checking out a whole bunch of new rock piles
that I had never I got some new mapping
for the Bonneville Pool
and there was stuff on there that I didn't know existed until I started
using this mapping and I found some absolute
flipping juice today nice oh man yeah so we got
you know we got some big tournaments coming up
early I mean yeah like a lot of our season finals
the Columbia River opens November 7th you
start getting big dogs this time of year too
yeah oh dude yeah we probably had 18 19 pounds
today yeah I think we would have been fishing
in the morning I mean it was also glass calm up there I got
a sunburn today some giants have been
coming out of those Idaho reservoirs too I saw
a guy yesterday posting a nine and a half dude I'm like gosh
yeah if I could get the stretch I want to go up
to those northern Idaho, those things look fun dude
I would do that with you, that'd be fun
to go up there freaking, I'd love to just take three four days we
just need to go for like a long weekend, just yeah I could
be tempted to do that, but that also goes
all the way through November and like I said
we're kind of like buttoning up the end of our
fishing season, we're still waiting for like our tributary coho
and hopefully we get some rain
that for me goes till December
so I'm kind of still like, there are still you know if you can
get creative and you can do some research
and figure out there are still some really good
summer steelhead fisheries that are happening
in a lot of the rivers if you know where to go so
don't sleep on that either because like sometimes October can
be one of the best months for catching
those things yeah, that's right yeah um yeah
so it's not like all, it's not like all doom and gloom
but I mean just with the day and age you know you
you probably have to be a little versatile you
can't be a one trick pony, no it's what we've taught
at Addicted Fishing Forever is like don't
learn how to fish a spot on a certain condition
on a certain day on a certain river height like
you better learn how to fish and this is one
of those times where the guys that know how to fish
can go and actually find concentrations
of good fish you know clear water stuff like that kind of
makes them a little tougher to go
but when you find them you find all of them yeah yeah and we've
even done a couple raft trips and a couple little
exploratory stuff, well I know guys are twitching
the bigger river too yeah I've been hearing
a lot about it especially in the other parts I gotta
tell you about a rock pile that was that we found today
that was miles from any river mouth and I
don't know what it was, there was there was coho
and chinooks on it i caught a couple chinooks on
wigglers on it that's all i had in my boat today
and we pulled up to it i'm like oh my god these
there's giants i'm like wait whoa
these aren't bass what what's going on and do a random i'll
show you on a map random rock pile i ---- you not there was hundreds
and they were like all
hanging out there and i don't know why like there was some current
and it's like i feel like that
probably but why dude we screwed with those fish
for an hour there was so many piled up that
when i first like i was running a jerk bait
a little bit i first ran a jerk i snagged one in
the back and it took off in the middle
of it fortunately popped off and gave me my my vision
110 back yeah 27 bucks a piece
but regardless like there was that there was that many of them
and when i threw that jerk bait off they came from 30 foot
and they all came up and i'm like
i mean there was like 12 of them
on my freaking live coming i'm like oh my god i'm like there's
no way these are bass and there's a 20 pound nook stuck right
in his back again and then we crazy
and then we caught a few yeah it was like i think
a guy if he was real savvy could go in there with
some twitching jigs maybe some right way find some areas right
and maybe you know maybe even some
maybe a little bait and could probably
and what's crazy is we pushed them off the rock and then went
around them like three times and they kept coming back
and they kept stacking in there and dude there's
the thickest it didn't look like the mouth i'm
just gonna say what the heck i'm just gonna say
it looked like the mouth of the click right there
but it was miles because we were like so we're just
really doing a lot of yeah yeah miles from from the river mouths
and they and they we pushed them
off and they came right and they'd come right back
and then they grab a wiggler and had one
wiggler in the boat that was my fault some sort
of freaking there's something there and i don't
know what it is i've never seen that before
and i've seen that like schools of fish like
and we see a lot of fall salmon when we're bass fishing out there
but usually you see them they're
on the rock or something on an edge you push them off
and they just they're they just they're gone
they're gone into the abyss no they kept coming back weird it
was my yeah but either way so that
was we're gonna put that on the radar
because i kind of want to go back up there and freaking
i think you could do some damn i don't know how
to do that with you it looks fun going up there
and just bass and coho and just kind
of doing it all it looks fun yeah it was yeah it looks like
yeah we were taking advantage
of it we had zero wind like i said i got sunburned today when no
wind burn but beautiful weather today yeah
horrible deer hunting weather unbelievably
and i didn't even go this weekend i just yeah it
was you should be glad you didn't saturday was a
goat rope show it's just more people than i've ever seen
and then sunday was just blue bird
weather freaking yeah we saw one nice fork
and horn that we almost got and that was it i want
to take dust in but i need to find
the real rain dumb one yeah i'm like mike save our save our
passes for later on well they see how it's open till november 1st
this year that's pretty epic
because normally october 31st is such a good day
so now having that november 1 is pretty cool
now look now we're sidetracking see guys
you can still make plans and you can still
find stuff to do even when the water's low
so another cool thing to do this time of year guys
is the fall trout fishing this time of year
is amazing like all the upper alpine lakes like it's
your last chance to kind of get up
and start getting into all those and still have beautiful
weather me and colt did a whole tour last year hitting three
or four of them and it was it was
so fun it brought me back so many memories of being a kid
so that's something you definitely
can't sleep on um the crappie fishing i heard has
been epic at some of the local lakes as well
already so that's something you definitely want
to look at another good thing that i know cam's
been doing i think he's offering trips for two guys is crabbing
and i want jason gave me a couple
crabs the other night dude and i would just devoured them
and it made me want to go crabbing
so bad like i love crab yeah
and what's what's crazy too is again i mean this is this is still
fishing uh fishing related
but you saw like the close of the razor clam yeah because the acid
levels well a few years ago we had
that a really bad domoic acid uh closure as well but one thing
about that that time of year is they never close
to the river like for whatever reason if maybe
it's the flushing mechanism that the Columbia provides
but the crab in the river never got
above that that unsafe level like all the coastal stuff did
so i'm kind of keeping my eye on that
like when they start doing
that stuff like i mean i don't know do you trust the WDFW no
let's just be honest this is what i know
do you watch Big Water Guy oh yeah you see how much
seafood that guy's he eats every single piece
of seafood on earth like i don't believe any of the
levels or anything they try to say like it's killing you
and all i just don't believe it
yeah i didn't mean like okay yeah
so as far as yeah right but i also feel like people like
somebody i also know guys that have went out
and done like done it and like harvested razor clams
and like cockle clams and stuff we won't say names
but i'm sure you know who i'm talking about
during those like yeah
and he was fine he's not he's dead he might have worms but
well yeah that domoic acid is pretty now like
that stuff's like that's what your nervous system is
Yeah, it's not something that I, well, that's what I'm saying.
Like either way.
Yeah.
The crabbing in the river was phenomenal.
In fact, like when, in fact,
when we had the end of September, instead of like playing
around up here on the gorge and stuff like that,
I just went right back down to the coast
and did crabbing and bottom fishing.
Granted, a lot of the bottom fishing
on the Washington side closed on October 17th, but
like, yeah, that was, it was that good.
And so we'll still, we'll keep on our
own and we'll still be doing trips.
I got a bunch of trips scheduled around things.
Usually November, right?
Oh, right now.
Like right now, crabbing is phenomenal.
I mean yeah like I was bringing three pots we'd throw
the pots out we'd go bottom fish for like
a half hour go pull the pots okay there's 35 okay well how many more
do you need like another 25 or
whatever go fish for like another 45 minutes
pick them up like oh we're done I mean it was
ridiculously good and hopefully we might
not have better seafood in the northwest other than a spot
prawn it's the best dungeness crab is unbelievable yeah I
do like the spot prawn you gotta go with
little trigger for that one anyways well like you say guys lots
of opportunity in that low water
I mean I just don't know where we're gonna end up in November
and I hope that I mean some of
our bigger rivers they'll still fish we're still poking around
on them things are tough yeah yeah
and then we're gonna probably be salmon fishing
and doing that stuff all the way through December
you know it sucks we used to have a lot
of early you know November tile style steelhead fisheries
and none of those really exist anymore they're completely gone
that's your list seriously
but we'll be basically
no we got some adventures
Jason and I are planning
like first couple weeks
of December
just to go really
freaking
drain some big bobbers
on some big fish
maybe do a little
reenactment of last
year's movie
I'm ready for that
for sure
go around for a little
while
I got that whole month
just open to do whatever
and I want to do some
of that stuff for sure
well shoot
we might get our
B-run coho then
it might not rain
until then
yeah seriously
what
I've always heard
people say this
and is this a real thing
because I don't believe it
that the fish won't come that they'll just stay
in the ocean another year not coho yeah they'll
come right they're coming no matter what coho
are only three year olds three three year olds like they
don't there's no such thing like chinooks will stay out
and do you know there'll be two three
four five six salt whatever
but like coho don't do that like the age class of an adult coho is
the age class of an adult coho
so they don't they're kind of like they're kind of like um
yeah see that's what i thought i
was like yeah they're they're coming whether they show up now
or whatever i mean then you hear all these rumors too
from the guys like tuna fish and they're like
oh we were coming in you know at 400 feet they
were just jumping all over the place and just
stuff like you hear a lot of stuff like there's
so much bait out there they're no hurry they're
just eating up like i don't know man yeah it's
weird it's i feel like we always get into these
little conversations when it's dry
and there's no fish around we'll keep this in mind so one of the
rivers that we've screw it you guys will look
at it up anyways but one of the rivers we had
They had 3,500 coho back last week.
3,500.
That's a lot.
That's a lot.
They came.
Yeah, they're trucking in.
Whether or not you're getting them to bite, it's another story.
They're moving in, though.
Yeah.
Yeah, and we fished the next day.
We were one for three on bright coho.
Caught a couple darks and twitched up some darks.
One for three.
3,500 coho.
Nothing?
Yeah.
Yeah, it's a long, big, long, yeah.
And we know from that river
Just based on all the other studies
Those fish seem to move quick in there
They got plenty
What your question was
Do you think they're still coming
I'm like yeah they are
And some of them are already here
What about the other river
Is the other river getting any yet
Nick got a few
Yesterday
Killed two
And he put two dark bucks back
Interesting
Not what we're used to
no yeah i don't know man weird
no one can hear what jason jason's talking yes exactly yeah there's
still plenty of water where they're not they're
not tidally locking up yeah they can move all
they want and do whatever they want yeah yeah
like i said i think you guys can't hear what
jason's saying right now but he's just saying
like yeah that river is so big and i think i
agree with him but i think the conditions
are just warrant they're just really hard to catch
yeah for sure it's warm and clear
and i can tell you the one i was on at 15 foot of this
Dude, we even saw that back in the day
when the fishing was incredible on some of those coastal rivers.
When we got that super low, clear water,
dude, it was way harder to catch them.
Way harder.
We'd still get them, but it wasn't like, yeah, for sure.
All right, everyone.
Well, quick announcement before we head out.
Do not forget our fall merch drop is live on the website, guys.
