James Kaufman, World News Report Today.
Ebola ravages the Congo.
Eighty deaths reported in one day yesterday.
Another Ebola outbreak is ravaging the Congo.
There are hundreds of suspected cases.
At least 80 people have passed
in one day's period in eastern the Ituri province.
This is the 17th outbreak of Ebola in the Congo in the last 50 years.
Ebola is a hemorrhagic fever that has
a high fatality rate in human beings.
Symptoms include high fever, muscle pain,
vomiting, and external bleeding.
Consumption of contaminated monkey meat, also known as bush meat,
is the number one known item
to transmit Ebola to humans.
CBS reported at least 80 deaths have been reported
in Congo's new Ebola disease outbreak
in the eastern Ituri province, authorities said,
as health workers raced Saturday to intensify screening
and contact tracing to contain the disease.
Officials first announced the outbreak on Friday with 65 deaths
and 246 suspected cases.
Those turned out to be underestimates.
Locals in Ituri's capital, Bunia,
say that they're afraid for their lives amid the frequent burials.
Every day, people are dying, and this is going on for about a week.
A week? And we're just hearing about it now?
We have people dying every day.
This has been going on for about a week.
For a single day, we buried two, buried three,
even more people, said Jean-Marc Azouay, a resident of Bunia.
The Congo Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba said late Friday there
have been eight laboratory-confirmed cases, among them four deaths.
Test results have confirmed that this is the Bundibugyo virus,
a variant of the disease that has been very less prominent
in the Congo in its past outbreaks.
This is the Congo's 17th outbreak since
Ebola first emerged in around 1976.
Ladies and gentlemen,
let's keep that area contained if it's that contagious.
Wow.
Please pray and give us a thumbs up
and remember that anything's possible in the bizarro world.
God bless you all.
