Space Weather Alert: Is the Sun Acting Up Today?

James Kaufman, World News Report today. Ladies and gentlemen, we're going through absolutely no space weather whatsoever, as predicted, no solar plasma, no solar winds. We can tell by our four Kp indexes seen here. Generally, a KP index is a combination of solar plasma and solar winds as met with Earth itself. So here we see it's very calm. anything over 3.5 and up would be well a disturbance or a storm right now we see nothing ladies and gentlemen now ladies and gentlemen unbeknownst to me we had a solar storm which is a proton storm burst out and you know what i really didn't know what it was a part of and I'm still not quite sure here, but we went into solar storm activity, not geomagnetic storm, but solar storm activity and proton storm activity. This happened right as, well, right around 8 p.m. Central Time. This lasted until about 11 p.m. Central Time, okay? And this is a hard call. Nothing was forecast. It's a hard call. All right, jumping over to our GOES X-ray flux. Ladies and gentlemen, what we're, I think, seeing is the remnants of this M2.69 solar flare that happened on May 22nd right here. It had an earth-directed coronal mass ejection that would be hitting right about now, and I think that's pretty much what we're seeing. Bang! Over to HMI Intensogram. we're looking at a bunch of simple sunspot groups so what do we have here three six nine simple sunspot groups 446 being the most dangerous it was a delta class sunspot group on the back side it emitted two x-ray class solar flares and right now they've actually cut it up into 446 four four nine and four four eight which i don't know if i agree with or not everything's simple you can tell in green it was beta gamma it would be in orange if it was red it would be a delta class sunspot all right looking at the absorption prediction center this is x-ray flux we're really looking at guys here last few hours of the x-rays piling in the north pole and south pole we have two holes the van allen belts don't reach you can see how intense the well radiation hitting everything is it's a bitch right there's seeming to be calming down but nothing but a bitch right take a look at this hmi 4446 looks just ugly ugly ugly someone said it's reverse polarity It looks like it's actually gained its polarity precisely, and it's a main mama-jama coming in to be earth-facing by tomorrow with one other very large sunspot following it. It's going to be just as ugly. Now, finally, I wanted you all to see this at 284 Angstroms. I want y'all to see how wicked this, this sunspot is. That we have a coronal hole that's basically facing Earth. That will speed solar winds up to about 650. Very small coronal hole. Another one trying to form here.
