Turtling
up on
me. Are
you
turtley
enough
for
the
turtle
club?
What
is
that
scope?
So hopefully you guys can tell I got a new camera.
It's a Canon
FS 300 I like it the first time I've got to use it outdoors
I'm at a place called Ojibwe across
the street from the prairie that me
and Ken usually go to some
black
oak
dominated
There's a big old sycamore see
when sycamore gets really old
the bark changes you can see this
Fungus here looks like for lack
of a better word poop on a stick
It's a Piospora in morbosa or a black knot of cherry
if you're not sure it's a good way to ID cherry
That's it there.
So this one it looks like Queen Anne's lace or wild carrot.
It's actually hemlock and it's poisonous
those are the leaves there and that's
the flower top the flower top is what
looks like Queen Anne's lace kind
of Queen Anne's lace it's a lot more closed
in something like that and there's always
a black flower black dot in the
middle of the flower this one there isn't one
is almost impenetrable sumac
there
a bunch
of big old
cottonwoods
you got some
awesome
mulberries
here and it
just rained there's actually water still
falling mmm these are good washes off
all the bird poop
which is a plus not
that bad size either
mm-hmm damn these
are good I've got a basswood tree here
a couple of indicating features they
usually grow in clumps like
this so there's one two three four five or six
of them here and it's all one tree obviously
but they just grow in clumps
like that so if you see the holes there
the little holes that's very common on
the basswood I think it's a sapsucker
that does that and the leaves are pretty
far gone right now the bugs have been going after them
but they've got that
almost heart shape
or spade shape to them now they're edible when they're
young well they're edible all the time
but it's better when they're young so
the three three good characteristics that this tells me that this is a
basswood is the clumps
the holes on the bark
and the shape of the leaves up up
nice good boy here's a good example
of sassafras taking out quite a few
different leaf shape that's
the the trilobed one that is the single one and
here is the mitten one
so they're all from the same same branch of the tree
actually there's the three different kinds
which is a good indicator and also
the green twigs you scratch them they
smell mmm smells like to me it smells
citrusy
but they've always got
a pungent smell to them
so this part of the woods
is called the oak savannah
and there is not very many left of this kind in
Canada this is one of the biggest ones I know there's
a couple hours from here
but this place is renowned
for the for the black oak savannah used to be a lot
of it it's a nice place
for our far spread out trees with just a little bit
of understory up once you get up north
there's nothing like this at all there's
There's a fawn over there,
pardon my shaky hands.
