China's new nuclear-attack submarine spotted on satellite footage.
Satellite footage of the shipyard in Shanghai,
China has shown the first glimpse of a new
nuclear-powered submarine of an entirely new class docked in the water,
fueling considerable
speculation regarding its role and capabilities.
The ship is notably the first nuclear-powered submarine built
at this facility, raising
the possibility that this shipyard will continue
to produce submarines based on this distinct new
design. No name has been intercepted
for the large new submarine at this time. The shipyard's
production of the vessel provides China
with three facilities capable of producing nuclear-powered
submarines, with the country's production capacity already overtaking
those of the United States
and Russia even before this.
The new submarine stands out
for its use of an X-shaped rudder
and it's considerably longer
than prior Chinese submarines
with an estimated 120 meters
compared to around 108 to 110 meters
for previous ships.
To place this in perspective,
the U.S. Navy's Virginia-class
nuclear-powered attack submarines
are 115 meters long,
just a bit shorter.
The new vessel notably represents the second new class
of nuclear-powered submarines launched in China just in 2026
after the first type, the 095 class, attack submarine that was launched
in the Bohai shipyard near the beginning of the year.
The new vessel's unique omission of the large protruding structure at
the top of the hull appears intended to further streamline its design,
better improving underwater speed and maneuverability,
and reducing noise, even at high speeds.
However, this inevitably affects the placement of periscopes
and other sensor masks.
The U.S. and Russian nuclear submarines rely
on using sails to break ice and surface in the Arctic
as a secondary function. The lack
of sails could cause difficulties if the new ship ever operates
in such climates. However,
the Chinese submarine fleet has little presence in the Arctic and it's
not expected to be an issue.
It is possible that the new submarine is being developed to complement
the Type 095 class as a second class of nuclear-powered combat ships.
Some analysts have raised the possibility
that it may be assigned a different role,
such as serving as a dedicated nuclear strike platform
using land-attack cruise or ballistic missiles.
Even before the launches of the Type 095 class
and this unnamed larger new ship,
improvements to Chinese nuclear-powered
submarine capability had led the U.S. Navy
to perceive a much greater challenge from their fleet.
Major enhanced advancements have been
seen on these new submarines that appear to be far quieter
and more survivable than previous
variants, like the Type 093 class design,
one of their older submarines. These new technologies
have been integrated and implemented
into these new nuclear submarines, including the Type 095
that was launched in January 2026,
which makes it much quieter and more survivable, and things like
Rim-driven propellers and magnetic drive technologies have also
been implemented in the last two submarines that they have launched,
the 095 and the, well, the one that we don't have a name for yet.
The new, still unnamed submarine just launched
in Shanghai is expected to benefit from all
these same upgraded technologies plus probably even more.
There's no telling what China has
in the cards for their up-and-coming models.
God bless, folks.
This is a formidable Navy.
