FF says: 1 inch of dirt and two inches of sand is the absolute minimum. In larger containers
FF does more simply because he can. But it's not optimal. Optimal for a 55 gallon tank
would be filling it to within an inch of the top. So the deeper the better. The more
substrate, the more balanced and healthier your tank will be. There is no maximum.
The maximum is whatever you can tolerate. The purpose of the sand is to keep the dirt
from going into the water column.

FF likes to put additives in the soil rather than in the sand.
Deep well water contains Sulphur, but it is iron. The gas that you smell does not last long.
