Video Summary
AI GeneratedThe host of Padres Digest discusses the recent Gold Glove nominations, highlighting the inclusion of Ty France and Freddie Fermin while questioning the omission of several key Padres players. The video analyzes various defensive metrics to determine if certain players were snubbed and evaluates the chances of the nominees winning the award.
This is outrageous as the Gold Glove nominations have dropped
and players you expected to get the nod got the nod,
but some players that you
also expected to get the nod did not get the nod of a nomination.
Who am I talking about? Did they deserve it? Did they not deserve it?
How outraged should we be? Let's talk about it.
Hi, welcome back to another episode
of Padres Digest with your host, Andrew.
Today we are talking Gold Glove stuff.
The nominations just got dropped.
You might have seen it.
You might have not saw it.
We have some players who are nominated, but I don't think it's enough.
We'll talk about it.
Hi, welcome back.
I already said that.
No.

Yeah, that stuff.
Okay, let's just jump directly into it.
So Padres, Ty France and Freddie Fermin
are named the Gold Glove finalist for the Padres.
Now, that's great. That's cool.
But I feel like we're missing some names.
We'll get into it. Right.
But these votes compromise 75 percent of the selection total
with the Sabre Defensive Index counting for the other 25.
These votes, as in the managers and coaches.
I don't know why I left that part off.
but managers and coaches comprise 75 the rest being
the Sabre Defensive Index so a lot of stats
are used we'll get into each one
but firstly this is only the first round right only one round of
balloting which was already done
so there's no take backs i guess you can call it uh and of
course France does lead MLB with 15 defensive runs saved
so he of course does deserve it right
so a Gold Glove overview of everybody
so you'll see some names added on there that you might have
expected Ty France Freddie Fermin finalist
but no Machado, no Jackson Merrill, no Tatis
eight fielding run value, 12 fielding run value
three fielding run value uh huh huh hello excuse
me so Tatis, Machado and Merrill of course have
been left off the Gold Glove finalist list is
that a massive snub well Manny Machado is not one
of the three that was kind of weird because you
know he's had a pretty good defensive year uh
the how the voters overlooked him remains unclear
so let's talk about the stats right
because i'm going to say a lot of stats today i want to make
sure you are clued in onto what's what
so DRS is defensive runs saved those are runs saved or cost
versus an average fielder at the position zero
is average FRV fielding run value that is range
arm catcher work and first base receiving
in runs zero is average that's from Baseball Savant
OAA is about outs above average that's
from Baseball Savant as well range only outs made
versus an average fielder harder plays
are worth more Saber Defensive Index SDI about 25% of the
Gold Glove like we said managers
and coaches cast the other 75% that's just a defensive index that
they made and then dWAR is defensive WAR
from Baseball Reference fielding runs plus a position
position adjustment about 10 runs equals one win
so keep that in mind screenshot it whatever you
want to do right so did they deserve a nomination
so we kind of mentioned some stuff already uh but
the Machado ranks first in fielding run value
and out above average plus 8 plus 12 wasn't nominated
uh but his negative three DRS and negative one
or negative point one defensive war
leaves something to be desired
but neither seems like enough to really leave him off
and he only had three errors compared to Max Muncy's 15
and Sonohara's 11 so let's take a look
at those numbers right so the FRV the range
the errors DRS we all saw that right Matt Chapman who
also is a pretty good fielder was also left off
and he had 15 DRS and 11.9 SDI uh but less FRV
range and errors than Machado
so who got in Bregman I'm okay with right Bregman's a good
glover a good glover good fielder Max Muncy Max
Muncy zero fielding run value negative one range
15 errors and no DRS to speak of I don't even know where he
was uh the website was down low
key so I couldn't find it
but uh SDI 4.8 cool defensive war 0.5 cool not outstandingly much
better than Machado and then Sonohara fine I guess 11 errors
though I don't love that but 2.6 SDI
4.8 for Muncy though is kind of insane I don't know what they
were smoking uh but I kind of want
some of it right uh 12 OAA is first among third baseman Machado
but not even nominated like if
Bregman or Sora wins fine but not even nominated
and if Muncy wins the Gold Glove I swear to god
him crashing out I don't know I don't know y'all
but you know Tatis and Merrill are another
example of a possible snub right PCA
is gonna win fine I'll accept it PCA is very good he could go
platinum this year and Andy Pajez cool fine Dustin Harris cool fine
but is Merrill a lot more of a
snub I mean you have 12 FRV five range six arm
3.6 SDI 0.6 defensive WAR uh the FRV 12 is tied
with Harris among third for NL center fielders more innings than Harris
and Pajez 11 assists
three errors DRS plus two OAA plus four
as of September 8th it's a little outdated but you know
they didn't update it uh so I think this one's more okay
because P. Crow or Armstrong is obviously
going to win so even if he was nominated Merrill
was uh he's not going to win but I thought like
he had a very good year I guess just not good enough
and let's be honest as long as PCA is
playing the way he does he's probably not going to win any awards uh
but Tatis on the other hand
he's a whole different statement right Tatis got
left off now he didn't play as much as some of the
other outfielders because he
also split time at second base I have that on the bottom so 930
innings and then 413 innings at second
or 930 in right field so maybe that's possibly why but his
fielding run value was three range was two arm
was one DRS was 2.7 on SDI uh but then you got
Seiya Suzuki who had a good year defensively
but only 973 innings but eight FRV which is obviously
really good range was four arm was four DRS of 14
and then a 6.8 SDI okay that makes sense right
and then the guy who's probably gonna win it i
feel like Corbin Carroll four FRV nine range
negative six arm not a great arm
but it's not the worst thing in the world 12 DRS and 10.9 SDI
okay and then Cody Bellinger i think
his name's Cody Bellinger i forget yell at me if i'm wrong
uh with six FRV negative one seven six point
zero seven i i think i like Tati's more than
benji on this benji how you say his name benji benji uh
but i i do think they're gonna give it
to Carroll uh but i i even not to nominate Tati
so just a little weird to me right not even a utility
no i felt like he could have at least got
a utility one unfortunately i can't really get
utility stats i don't know how they i mean i i
get i guess i get how they calculate it but it's
not really something i can look up off the top
of my head uh it's just weird that he's a two-time
platinum gold uh platinum winner two-time gold glove winner
and you're not even gonna nominate
him but yeah fifth amongst NL right fielders
and FRV okay at second base negative four defensive
runs fine whatever utility finalists
though are Mauricio Dubon, Jared Triolo and Yaimar, Yaimar
Vargas I think, or Miguel Vargas, one of the Vargas one
of the Vargas people uh so it's not as bad as
a snub I don't think Mero or Tati is as bad
as a snub as Machado below Muncie but I still think
at least a nod could have been nice you know what I mean
so I guess we'll go back to uh
Ty France and Freddie Fermin
who do deserve their Gold Glove nods right Ty France obviously
one of the best defensive infielders
in the entire league not just first baseman but I think
first infielders in general only three errors
and 951 chances at first uh so of course he's
going to be really good right 10 FRV five range
three first base receptions receiving something
like that whatever I just showed you
and I already forgot uh 15 DRS so very good 6.3 SDI 0.9 DWAR
and you got Olson and Rumfield you can look at the numbers
but Olson's really good honestly I
could see him winning it
but I I feel like Ty France should hopefully have it uh but we'll see
right and then Freddie Fermin
also pretty good right Fermin threw out a nice 30.4 percent of
would-be base stealers which I feel like
is low I don't know I feel like Freddie Fermin wasn't
great at throwing out people this year
but you know I guess he was I mean you have uh uh Rodolfo
Duran with his absolute cannon
but he didn't play that much Luis Campusano had some pretty clutch
outs but i mean you can't argue Freddie Fermin
while his bat is not the best he's a he's a very
good defender right so his well-rounded defensive excellence
this past season is what got him that
nod and i can take you i can give you
a nice little look at that you got Freddie Fermin
nine three four two eight f 5.6 uh luis torrens
former padre 10 5 3 1 8.8 and then gabby moreno
7 5 2 1 7.2 i think they're gonna give it to luis torrens mostly
because his numbers look better
uh but he's still good right 10 blocks above average uh
which savant what savant says and
it's more than moreno and torrens
who both have half of that frv he's eighth among mlb catchers
and SDI fifth among NL catchers behind Torrens
and Moreno so I don't think Fermin will win it
to be honest but if he does right
so I've given you the numbers so I want to know your guys's
opinions do you think Machado Merrill
and Tatis were snubbed all of them only one or two of them
or none of them they all deserve to not be nominated
and do you think that uh France and
Fermin are gonna win you let me know how you guys feel
a lot of numbers today so sorry but you know
