We’re leaving France and heading south!

This is our biggest passage aboard Sea Gypsy yet, as we set off from Brest with plans to cross the Bay of Biscay, round the north-west coast of Spain and sail all the way to Porto Santo, near Madeira.

With around 1,400 nautical miles ahead of us, this is the biggest passage we’ve ever attempted, and for the first time, we’re taking on a journey of this scale with just the two of us on board.

We’ve spent weeks watching the weather, waiting for a suitable window to make our move. By September, those windows were becoming few and far between, and although the wind forecast for Biscay had dropped, more unsettled weather was developing further south. We knew we needed to get moving, but choosing the right route wasn’t going to be straightforward.

As we settle into our first few days at sea, we start finding our rhythm, learning more about sailing the boat offshore and getting to grips with life on passage. With surprisingly calm conditions across Biscay, we even get the chance to practise some downwind sailing.

But while Biscay turns out to be kinder to us than we’d expected, the weather further south is already raising questions about what lies ahead…

Thanks so much for watching♥️
