The Komitstal steel plant owned
by Metinvest is one of the three largest
in Ukrainian-held territory, all of which have
been taken offline in recent weeks by Russian attacks.
Oh, we have an alarm. Roll, roll, roll.
So we've just been told there's
a drone now circling above this area. They just showed us
there the phone, as you saw.
And so now we have to leave, because moments before we arrived,
there was a drone. Now there's yet another.
You can imagine something like this steel plant
obviously was and continues to be a target.
So we're going now down to the shelter after those
three or more drones we saw circling right above where we
were by the furnace. I imagine this is
something they do pretty regularly here.
The Komitstal steel plant went offline in September
after a ballistic missile attack killed five workers
and destroyed one of the blast furnaces.
Since then, efforts to repair it are constantly interrupted by drones,
forcing workers to take shelter deep underground.
These women say they come here two to three times per day.
But when you see some of the destruction,
I mean, how does that make you feel?
Scared, they tell me.
They say they are worried about the future, their jobs and their lives.
Between alerts, the plant's CEO shows us the extent
of the damage that took the plant offline.
In the end, disaster has come to us.
The ballistic missile came crashing
right here directly into the furnace.
It's caused millions of dollars of damage and will take months,
if not years, to repair.
Before the war, iron and steel made up over 30% of Ukraine's exports.
Following weeks of Russian attacks,
Oleksandr says production of steel in Ukraine has fallen to near zero.
