Over the next two weeks, we are going to meet
the candidates running for mayor in Summerside and Charlottetown.
We invited them all to speak with us to share what
their biggest priorities are and why people should vote for them.
We're going to share those conversations with you.
Now we start tonight in Summerside, where there
are two people vying for the job, Corey Snow and Basil Stewart.
The CBC's Cody McKay spoke with both of them earlier this week.
We're going by alphabetical order, by last name,
and we begin with Summerside's Corey Snow.
Hi, my name is Corey Snow, and I'm the Deputy Mayor
and Candidate for Mayor of the City of Summerside.
What are the priorities as they look like to you heading
into this election for the City of Summerside?
Yeah, so number one priority would be to make sure
that we get access to the cable in Borden for our electric utility.
That'll be huge for many years to come and bring some reliability
and dependability to our electric utility here in Summerside.
Number two, we'll say,
would be to continue the revitalization of our downtown.
We're here in our downtown right now,
and we're seeing lots of momentum being built here in the downtown,
an actual revitalization for our downtown core.
And number three would be to address the overall affordability within
our municipalities for families and seniors
and making sure we're doing everything we can to keep our city as cheap
and affordable as possible
for the residents to live here and call it home.
When you think about the issues that the city has
been facing in the last four or eight years
since you've been on council, what are those?
So a lot of them have been the issues within our downtown.
We had a downtown that has been dying over the last 15,
20 years for sure,
and that's one of the issues we definitely put
a lot of work in and addressed.
The other is the public safety and homelessness
and making sure the residents within our city feel safe and secure
and making sure those that are unhoused are taken care
of and have a safe place to lay their head at night.
So those are some of the issues that we've
been dealing with over the last number of years.
Why are you the candidate who's going to deliver on that?
Especially, I mean, you've been in several
elections now, so why are you the one to do that?
Well, because my boots are on the ground.
I'm hearing it right now.
I'm hearing the concerns.
I've been in the job for the last eight years,
deputy mayor for the last four, currently the acting mayor.
I know exactly what our city is going through right now.
I'm part of the conversations that are already started
with all those topics that I just talked about.
I truly believe I am the best candidate for this job right now,
and I'm looking forward to the challenge ahead.
There will be some advanced voting days
for the municipal elections that Elections PEI run.
That's Charlottetown, Summerside, Cornwall, Stratford and Three Rivers.
Advanced voting in those communities starts this weekend.
That's Saturday, October 24th.
There are also two other days for advanced voting.
On Monday, October 26th and Friday, October 30th.
Election Day is Monday, November 2nd.
You can check where to vote
and when the polls are open on Elections PEI's website.
That's electionspei.ca.
Now, if you live outside of those five municipalities,
the province runs those elections and information
on those races is available on the PEI government's website.
