-- Return to Puzzle lake with my pal Ken

Well, we just finished our eight-hour drive up north
and expected there to be a lot of snow.
And as you can see there's some but not much.
There's Ken's load out with his sweet shoes.
There's my gay blue sled with my traditional shoes.
We are off that-a-way where there's no
more people. It's kind of hard to walk here.
We're just sliding along really. I should have brought
my crampons I think walking alongside
the the shore just for safety reasons we took a long
detour not a long detour a short detour
and uh to just walk around the edges of the lake so that
we're not putting ourselves in danger which
is probably a good idea how is that come to one of
our first inclines first of many see how KGD handles it there's sure
to be a lot of cussing and
Things getting lost
Buddy took a stick out on the way. All right.
That's what we just came off of all three
Now we're up on a portage on land.
But as you can see there is all open water there
My heart sank, oh, you know,
it sucks even more I wasn't
recording that our third
lake which is Lois Lake
Might spend the night there might push on to Norway
Not sure. Really should have brought crampons.
We're just sliding across the ice here.
If you try to walk you're gonna fall
so you just gotta kind of slide your feet.
And it's real sketchy.
It's like, I don't know, there's water coming up anyways.
Some spots are worse than others
but that should be pretty solid underneath.
I got it on film!
Well we're entering Mud Lake which is nothing more than a
beaver pond really.
But this is the amazing fishing hole. This is where we
I caught all those bass and I caught that pike too.
I think we found our place for the night.
I'm gonna post up right between that tree and that tree
and Ken's gonna set up over there where he is.
I think we're both pretty tired
and
setting
up camp
might take
a minute.
I was trying to set up my tarp all that fancy way
that the A-frame,
I can't figure
it out.
I got my, pulling it back there to give me some room.
I'll tie it off, but I can't seem to figure out
how to get it all neat and flying low.
Dragged up the A-frame like normal
put a mast over there as a door.
It's kind of a windbreak because the lake is over on that side.
Well we got all our stuff set up.
Fire's going, firewood's here. Probably just cook our food,
hang around by the fire tonight. Off to Bear Lake in the morning.
We are uh you know eight o'clock,
ten after eight. We're gonna head out to try
to make it over to Bear Lake. Ken says it's about
500 meters from here and uh you can bet it's gonna be up
and downhill for sure and through the trees.
these hills
are a pain
in the ass it's
kind of way
down there fix
up this sled
I just did this hill might not look like too much on camera
and really it
wouldn't be if I
was just walking
but lugging
this sled
to work out it's a
Bear Lake here
and plan on camping next to the lake in the pines the snow is
really coming down off the lake that's
the lake right there I personally want
to find a spot that's a little shelter from the wind this is ridiculous
all right guys come out here i've
been to Puzzle Lake here where we uh four times and every time
we try to get to Bear Lake and uh just we've got here a bunch of times
but we just have never been
able to camp here so we got here today
and we camped we were all set up we're gonna spend the
night so that's pretty cool our goal
is finally achieved i'm just eating some of my kielbasa
and cheese, all kind of set ups.
So I'll be setting up more elaborate setup than I did.
I just got the normal A-frame.
The ground's frozen, so you can't pound
any stakes into it, so mine's not too good,
but it should be all right.
I got it over the wind and everything.
Snow's still coming down hard.
It's not as big flakes now, but it's been snowing all day,
and I'm beat.
I have no energy at all.
I think that I was sick a couple weeks ago,
i imagine just haven't got it back yet camp down
in there you can see the snow coming down hoping
to not get too wet
but it's crazy in there the snow is coming off the trees like nuts
but out here the wind is real bad i think the lesser
and this island is covered with mullein
just mullein after mullein the isle
of mullein call it i would go as far as to call it the isle of
mullein early supper about
4 30 and i eat my two
meat sticks meat sticks
all around all right guys
it's the third day about six in the morning
and last night after i stopped videotaping it stopped
snowing but the snow was stuck on the trees
and it came down all night like that until wee hours of
the morning where it turned to ice it froze
so my tarp is now one solid ice block and then down here
It's literally ice,
and there's water underneath it.
So, all my stuff's covered in ice and snow.
Got down pretty cold last night,
but I had my old blanket inside my sleeping bag,
which helped a little bit.
Made it for tight quarters,
but we'll go see what temperature it is right now.
Ken said it was about negative six.
Get the fire going,
get some breakfast
and warm up.
Well, it's down
to about negative five now.
Hopefully it stays this cold all day,
and we'll be able to travel good.
