Mason Thames Recalls A 'Black Phone 2' Scene So Intense It Made A Producer Ask His Mom If He Was ‘OK’

For horror fans, Scott Derrickson very much ups the gore in this one. Yeah, I'd say so. What is your, like, are you, like, looking into the special effects department, like, checking out how all that kind of stuff is done? It's so awesome. I mean, that's the best part of filmmaking is getting to be there and watch the behind the scenes and just the process of it all. I think everybody a part of, you know, our team with, you know, the the practical effects that we had they were so fantastic and they were all top-notch to everybody who's on their a-game so getting to see that and watching a kid's head get cut off and and me smashing the grabber's head in was uh it was a lot of fun i was gonna ask you about that scene like i assume like that's not even him you just have a dummy that you're just well well like the beginning the first smash well yeah i did not smash even him but uh but uh i just had his head we filmed the first part where I don't remember what I said. I think, uh, I was in flames, but it's ice and I just go like that. And then we cut and then they, they replaced him with a full dummy and with this head and it had skull muscles, blood brains, everything. And I just, I remember, uh, I don't know. It felt like therapy. It was like a rage room. I really just took out everything on that. And, uh, remember everybody goes cut and it was kind of silent. And the producer looks at my mom, uh, sitting at the video village and is, she okay um and it was a lot of fun that was uh honestly it was my favorite scene to shoot in that movie yeah i mean i feel like we even kind of now just discussed the two big catharsis moments in this movie very very different extremes as far as content yeah i mean well actually i would just be on the subject of practical effects makeup i mean what was it like hanging out with Ethan Hawke in his like full-on makeup it was really funny it was really funny i mean like we're just like filming we're sitting on the ice and we're just like we're just sitting there man he's just in full makeup just like just kind of waiting this is really funny like it's just really really great he's sitting in his cast chair just like reading a book with some sunglasses on it's uh it's great it's so so great he's awesome so getting to come back with him was a was a another fun time
