Off The Desk 10/21/26

Good morning, happy Wednesday, and welcome to Off the Desk. I'm Julia O'Keefe. I'm Kaylee Collins. And I'm Chris Pazakis. Good morning, it's Wednesday. Good morning, it's weather Wednesday. Weather Wednesday. Yeah, another weather Wednesday. Haven't had one of those in a while. That's right, yeah. Nice weather to talk about, though. Or Chris, you were actually saying there's not much weather to talk about. It's pretty much copy and paste almost every day. I'm kind of bored, I'm not going to lie. There's not much to talk about. and like uh it's just yeah the same thing almost every day i feel like i've broken a record it's like today's gonna be nice and again upper 50s and 60s and i mean the only thing i can really point out between like today and tomorrow is gonna be a little breezy besides that it's quiet it's dry over the next seven days i don't see any rain or even this time of year it could be talking snow i don't see anything like that that's nice uh and enjoy it everything's pretty average it's not like oh we got a big warm-up on the way or big cool down it's like pretty much like just bland it's just it's it's what exactly it should be it's just the ordinary but we'll take it i'd rather be a broken record saying this then oh it's cold out there you know it's raining again or ice yeah i'd rather be a broken record talking about nice weather than being like it's raining again it's raining again like bad weather but like heat and humidity yeah no don't miss that but um yeah today's gonna be another nice day there could be a little bit more in the way of passing clouds this afternoon but uh upper 50s low 60s dry pretty much some fall weather uh not much going on i mean i mentioned it this morning i guess take it while we got it because eventually that seven days not going to be so quiet the cold yeah something always will come down the pipeline eventually so yeah i'm not ready for the cold i wish we could hang on to this for a little longer which we are but it's unfortunate that it seems like the best seasons well really the fall lasts the like the least amount of time yeah even though the fall season technically lasts into december i only count fall as like pretty much october like late september october yeah because november and december it's it feels like winter yeah yeah the second the clocks turn back and it's getting dark at 4 30 at night it's winter i agree it's cold yeah i thought of um last night i remembered it it was you know the last six 6 p.m. sunrise and kept thinking well yeah it's happening it's gonna it's gonna get dark yeah it is even when it's so bright out like last night like not even a cloud in the sky you're noticing just how dark it's getting you know it's like yeah just feels different the air feels different yeah everything feels different yeah did you guys go outside yesterday at all yes yeah went for a walk uh started cutting down some like the shrubs and bushes in my yard that get cut down before the winter to do stuff like that yeah yeah guys big news i didn't say uh me and bobby bought a house yeah i have to get ready for that we don't close on it for a little bit so um i can give up for you know being a homeowner it's so funny because i started my home search i think when i came back here it was it's been a while we've kind of paused it once i was expecting uh ava and then resumed it over the summer and finally found something so that's awesome welcome to the lawn mowing and yes get ready for and shoveling the driveway and all that even the in-house stuff oh yeah a lot more than an apartment thing to keep up with but we're up for the challenge now that's so exciting it's good though so exciting we're excited um yeah i was outside yesterday i played with my dogs for a little bit and i was noticing the the beautiful trees and kind of taking that in before the leaves all start to fall too so yeah lots of things are your dogs do they like um i guess like the the snow and being out in the leaves and stuff like that yeah well one of my dogs um he's a little anxious he has some some anxiety so he doesn't like the leaves crunching like if i run through the leaves he'll freak out but if he runs through the leaves he loves them but it's if other people other people are making the noise out there but we'll still like make a leaf pile for him and stuff and and that's fun but they love the snow and the ocean too so they like the change of seasons they get a little bit of everything cute yeah anytime a leaf moves her she chases it so like yesterday i'm sitting in my backyard and the leaves are flying everyone she doesn't know where to go wait i got this one and then when she catches it she holds in her mouth she like and looks at you and then drops it and then goes to the next one oh so cute her little body like she's like probably the size of a leaf i know some leaves are big and she's like a squirrel yeah that's awesome so cute so cute well um we're already like wow 10 days out from halloween i mean the end of october is nearing but it's the 21st today's national apple day so that's kind of fun yeah do you guys have any favorite apple treats yeah oh there's lots of types i'm a big apple cake fan oh yeah or like an apple crisp with like vanilla ice cream i like an apple crisp yeah i'm also a big fan of apple cider too i love apple cider i love apple i was just thinking the other day i haven't done this yet like i want to just like get a glass of apple cider and do the like cinnamon sugar rim oh yeah make it festive and fun little apple slice in there too they have an apple cider mimosa i have yeah really good yeah fall brunch very fun really i mean yeah apple cider donuts love apple cider you know one of my my very first job in high school was at an apple orchard and we had obviously like the apple cider donuts but we had apple i guess they called them apple fritter donuts so they had like little chunks of apple inside the apple cider donut with the like cinnamon sugar oh my god they were so good i worked at the bakery department i had to stop myself from a donut every single day i had to get them warm though i put them in the microwave yeah yeah it makes a difference yeah it was good um my my brother went apple picking a few weeks ago and then he went off to school without taking the apples with him so we made homemade applesauce and it's really good yeah that was really good um but i love apple pie i was gonna say you guys apple pie yeah yeah anything apple anything apple apple crisp flavored ice cream really good flavored ice cream good yeah yeah yeah really good um so yeah enjoy an apple today there's so many today's the day to do it yeah today's the day and then on the flip side another fall favorite flavor it's national pumpkin cheesecake day um so you can have like pumpkin stuff and i love cheesecake yeah look at that yeah i don't know if i've ever had pumpkin cheesecake though i don't know that i think of it had different types of pumpkin treats but right i would assume it'd be kind of like a pumpkin pie, this cheesecake, yeah it's like but the same kind of flavor, yeah really good I love pumpkin um so yeah another cool thing happening today I mean we've been talking about it all week and the weeks leading up to this today but we're hosting a debate here at 22 News um again today this is the third one we've hosted here this year so there's been there's been a lot of stuff to talk about especially in this area and with the election coming up yeah but today Congressman Richard Neal and independent candidate for Massachusetts first congressional district Nadia Milleron are going to be here to face off in a debate at the 22 News studios ahead of the midterms that'll be from 12:30 to 1 so we have a shorter 22 News at noon today and Patrick Barry from 22 News and Focus will be the host of that so and it's going to be rebroadcasted tonight at 7:2 if you miss it so yeah yeah and they're going to discuss some important issues I'm sure and Congressman Neal has been the incumbent in that position for so long now that yeah it's it's interesting once he has a challenger and there are a lot of different topics that people care about so it'll be I think a good a good watch election day is what two weeks away yeah it's coming up um and so are the deadlines yeah jinx it's are the deadlines for um early voting and to get your mail-in ballot in too so make sure that you are registered to vote I think the deadline to register is the 24th so that's friday or no saturday and then um the mail-in voting you have to get those in by the 27th i think that's what it was yeah and then early voting and then of course there's election day so get out there and vote it's an important one um and we have info on candidates and everything that will be on the ballot it's about questions that are hefty yeah there's a lot of them so do your research before you get to the polls because that would be a lot of them yeah you're gonna want to go in yeah knowing what you're gonna vote before you go in there so you don't have to read it all yeah in the booth because it's hefty but yeah with that we'll take a short break here and then we'll come back with some other things trending in the news technical difficulties it's i'm trying to get used to this new system but we're back we're back back here at the desk on this weather wednesday um we were talking about a debate that we're going to have here at 22 news later this afternoon but there's some simpler fun debates that we have amongst ourselves that are kind of trending online that we thought we'd talk about here. Julia, let's hear it. All right. Well, here's the first one. And this is kind of fun. Some people are divided about the use of LOL in text messaging. And should we, as a society, it is kind of geared towards the millennials who really use it. But I mean, it's very frequent in my texting. I feel like I am so guilty. I'm an LOLer. Like if i'm sending a text and i don't add lol at the end i feel like it sounds too dry too dry i get that i get that too i'm a big lol but i put it in all caps so it's like so it's like more ironic i guess i'll do that sometimes like yeah obviously if i'm in like reacting to something that that's funny but i'll be i will send a text that's that's serious that doesn't need a laugh out loud at the end but i add lol i've just always done it like if i was texting you guys um hey like in the morning hey guys running a little late uh you know hit some traffic lol yeah i don't need to add that but i do we're not laughing you know nobody's laughing at that that's funny that was just an example but i do i'm guilty of doing that yeah yeah or like my big thing in text is the double exclamation point okay or exclamation points like in general i do that too i feel like when i like if i don't have an exclamation point again i feel like right right or someone gonna think that i'm mad at them or something whereas my younger sister who is around your age she texts we like make fun of her she texts so dry and she's like really when you see her person she's like what like i'm like i asked you a question you said sure she's like yeah i said sure and i'm like that's or like i'll text her and she's just like okay just okay and like or she's like haha yeah like just very very dry not giving me energy you know yeah my sister-in-law can be like that like whenever it's like someone's birthday so much just try having birthday no exclamation point or anything and then and then you see her it's like happy birthday and you're like that was a nice text yeah i do lol sometimes i don't even know i'm saying it that's funny i'll just i know it's like a habit yeah yeah i feel like i i feel like i'm a pretty animated texter i think you are i think i am too yeah i i think growing up my i mean shout out to my mom for this um i got a phone much later than all of my friends did and she was always she always taught me like when you're texting someone make sure that your messages can't be misconstrued so because you can't get much emotion from a text message yeah so i feel like that's always put me in the position of okay i'm gonna i need to be an animated texter whether it's something silly or an emoji or like make a joke i don't know i we say in broadcast actually right like you talk i feel like i try to ask like i talk yeah that makes sense i feel like the driest texter of all time our dads at least my dad is i'll write like a paragraph of like trying and he'll be like sure or be like sounds good and like in the middle of it it's like a question he won't even answer and then you have to like be like dad what are you like it's fine see like my dad it depends like he can be a pretty animated texter but sometimes the things like he's kind of like the person who will maybe overuse an emoji or like you know or a gif or something he likes to use the gifs a lot which is kind of funny my dad's also I think just old school like pick up the phone and call me yeah yeah like he doesn't want to text he's like just call me yeah funny it's funny so yeah that was we're we're four we're pro lol we're pro lol yeah we like it um okay another one has to do with um soda what's the best way to drink your soda do you prefer it in a can a bottle or from like a fountain drink a bottle bottom of the list i think yeah i think more so a can i just like the like crack in the can and it just seems like it's yeah crisper fizzier to me but sometimes you can get a really good like crispy fountain drink depending on where you go yeah but it's not a guarantee whereas i feel like cans are kind of always a guarantee okay that's why okay i don't really drink soda that much so i feel like i don't have much of a or like a seltzer i usually drink like seltzer water but like yeah i would probably put But can first. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I can't remember the last time I drank soda. It's been a while. I'm not a soda drinker, but I'd say can. Can. Just for the crispiness. So I think the fountain drinks, sometimes like at first they taste good, but then they get watered down. They get watered down with like all the ice you put in it. Yeah, all the ice you put in it. The ice. And then, I don't know, the glass is just whatever. So I go can. Yeah. Have you seen our new vending machine here? Yes, I have. That was the first thing I noticed when I walked into the break room. Fancy. Oh my gosh. upgraded uh drink dispenser there there's coffee in there there's coffee oh i didn't even notice yeah yeah check that out yeah actually i think so many people were using it the first week they had to repair it but it was back it was back and better than ever you know walking at four o'clock in the morning you just see such an inviting glow from oh yeah you do yeah from the break room so fancy we love it um okay the final one and this got a lot of traction online there was a girl who posted a tiktok and she was saying she's basically calling kind of calling people out and saying if you're going to visit a city for a concert or an event or something that doesn't include friends who live in that city it's rude to ask them to stay with for you to stay with them she was saying go go stay in a hotel don't bother asking your friends in the city you're visiting what are friends for right i disagree with that obviously the internet's very yeah i disagree as well i also disagree i would be offended i think if a friend was literally in my town or nearby and didn't want to come stay with me i'd yeah you want to spend money on a hotel and you can literally come stay and hang out with me yeah we don't see each other all the time like especially if you give them a notice and it's a friend like if you're visiting a city it's probably a friend you don't see very often yeah and you just tell them hey i'm going to this concert i'm going to this event would love to stay with you if you have like the the room or whatever or the availability yeah and also i just feel like probably i guess it just depends on your friends but you can like if i'm gonna do that i would offer to you know maybe make a meal or bring something or oh i'll take you out to dinner you know like that's kind of just what friendship is and i same thing i would want my friends to stay with me i guess if somebody was overly asking you all the time to stay at your place but like that's not really what this was even no no it wasn't yeah it's more like i took it as it's an opportunity yet to hang out and see people that you haven't seen and my friends would totally be mad if i didn't ask them oh yeah with them because i don't get to to see them that often especially in new york city where a hotel is so expensive for one night yeah no don't that's no no no it was the argument like did she feel like people because it was new york city people were using her or like her friends or whatever made her put this debate out on the internet right well so this was actually someone who doesn't live in new york city this is someone just going to the concert so i think i think the argument was more like if you want to take even the fact that it was New York out of the equation it was more like if you have plans without like the people without your friends who live there don't bother asking them okay because they're not going to the concert you're going to but i just think that my i'm thinking of my friends that live out of state i think if i were to reach out to them and say hey i'm going to this concert in your city this weekend would you mind if i stayed with you i don't think they would be offended i don't think like well i'm not going so no no and if they are like that then it's kind of yeah yeah but like if you do it don't show up empty-handed and yeah yeah treat it as a hangout make friend or make time obviously for the friends that you're staying with even if you're doing a different event yeah like if you're going to a concert than before and you're going to stay with them make plan like i don't know go out to breakfast the next morning or yeah hang out with them for a little bit right exactly yeah so those are some those are some polarizing questions where was this girl like that did this it was just on TikTok and it was in regards to the Harry Styles concert because Harry Styles is has a residency at MSG right now so everyone's going there and it's hard to find a hotel and blah blah blah all these things so the New York, it was it was it was about New York yeah um final question this one's kind of fun it's our question of the day here at 22 News um one of our producers Lindsey has kind of taken it upon i guess all the producers have really to come up with a question and kind of boost newsroom morale have things to chat about so today's question of the day was what is the best piece of brownie in the pan i think obviously creates this question i think i don't know who came up with that one it's Lindsay and Nathan go back and forth with picking them what's the best piece of the brownie yeah obviously it's the middle center middle or like yeah yeah it has speed up i'm in the middle i would go middle i would eat like a side one if i had to that had a little bit of like kind of crust but i don't like the corner pieces so people who are like the corner one of the corner hard pieces reach their own but that's not my yeah there i'm with you i could do a side piece though a little bit of both but yeah you gotta get the middle yeah that's the best part like the soft part yeah now i want a brownie yeah i had a brownie so now she's we're doing questions every day in the newsroom yeah they've been rotating them the other one is a hot dog a sandwich that's a popular one oh i've heard this one um no is soup cereal i don't think so cereal i mean it's cereal soup or you know vice versa oh okay well team edward or team jacob made an appearance you know i've never watched twilight i actually haven't watched it all the way through either what do i i told one of my friends that and She was like floored. You've never seen Twilight? I don't know. I just never got around to it. It was always one that I would see it on the TV guide and like catch the last 20 minutes. But I just never got into it. Yeah. I don't know. Maybe we'll have to watch it this fall. Then we can decide. Team Edward or Team Jacob. Right. All right. The countdown. the countdown is on yeah are you guys doing anything you're gonna dress up uh yeah i think so i'm still deciding not not a lot of the days no i don't even know if we did um my friend's having a party i'm still deciding what i'm gonna be i i think noah and i are either gonna do a lifeguard and i'll be a shark oh that's cute um that sounds fun yeah and i kind of wanted to get one of the blow-up shark costumes but it would be funny depending on what we do because i don't know yet but either that or um yeah firemen and i'll be like fire which is kind of dumb i have flame sunglasses and i think they're so fun yeah so i don't know like an orange outfit or something yeah something like that um yeah what about you guys anything i don't think i'm actually gonna dress up i'm gonna have ava dress up um just because i think i said yeah bobby has to work so um she'll be a cute little beanie baby and i'll get together with like my siblings if their kids and stuff and like probably we probably will attempt to go out trick-or-treating it'll be like kind of right near her bedtime but it's a special occasion you know nice so yeah and then usually like in my brother's neighborhood his sister-in-law they'll all like live super close together she has everybody over for like food and to hang out afterwards so it'll be fun yeah cool I don't think I'm doing anything for Halloween itself I'll probably just be home welcoming the trick-or-treaters which I like doing yeah But this weekend we have like this family like fall fun party that we do every year. And so we dress up. Everyone like dresses up for it. Maddie's not going to be around. She's in Utah this weekend. So me and my brother are doing a costume. We're going to be the stepbrothers. Oh, nice. That's awesome. So I got like the vest and like the button down like the wigs. You have to recreate that photo of when he's like, yeah, standing behind you. I'll show it next week. It's going to be good though. that'll be good a little good funny one i saw this i saw this couple on tiktok where the guy comes out you know like morgan wallen in his recent tour he would do like his stage walk before and he just had like random celebrities come out and like walk with him yeah so it was like her boyfriend was morgan wallen and he's like singing the the intro or whatever and she comes out dressed like post malone i think i saw that yeah but like some of those like if you don't execute it well it's just kind of like whatever but i think she did a pretty good job yeah that's there are some really creative ones out there i've saw things i would never think of right like very very niche things i saw someone um was do you know that picture of zendaya on the red carpet and she's wearing a giant hat immediately what you're talking about this person is wearing a giant cut like cardboard hat it's huge you can't it's huge and then there's just a tiny picture of zendaya at the bottom of it people are like what are you so funny um there's also there's this there's this TikToker I watch who makes reviews of Dancing with the Stars and she and Derek Hough have this strange online banter going on right now and she always will complain about how Derek Hough tries to get behind in the camera and someone was this girl Jackie and Derek Hough and they'd had like a feud and I was like that's so niche and so funny that is funny but people are so creative so it's fun it's i know i love i love halloween like seeing people's creativity it's always fun yeah um well in the spirit of halloween if you want to go to McDonald's the the Boo Bucket Happy Meals are out and uh they're disney they're disney villain themes so if you have a favorite that's cool like Maleficent i think Ursula and Cruella de Vil were on there so i used to love getting happy meals when i was a kid just for the toys yeah i would love like you know would you like leave school for a doctor's appointment or something and come back later and come back with your happy meal and all your friends you're my mom yeah your mom would stop at McDonald's like yeah i got my happy meal thanks yeah it's fun fun times so halloween and you know food buckets festive things have you guys i've never really thought of who my favorite like disney villain would be i love ursula ursula because i just love the little mermaid and she has so many good lines. That is a good one. Scar from Lion King. I don't know. Jafar was another one. Is that Aladdin? No. Jafar is Aladdin. Scar is Lion King. Jafar is cool. What's the name of Rapunzel's mom?
