We want a home not to be beaten up.
That was just one of the slogans splashed
on placards in the Portuguese capital,
where thousands flooded the streets to call for affordable housing.
Protesters have been inspired by a similar movement in Spain,
many camping at Rossio Square in downtown Lisbon.
Police had removed all tents on Tuesday,
but protesters called for a new gathering.
Demonstrators are opposed
to recent measures announced by the government,
including easing the cap on yearly rent increases.
and facilitating the eviction of tenants who fail to pay their rent.
Let's hear now from protesters.
It's not just young people, the elderly,
the middle class or workers who are affected.
Everyone is impacted by the housing crisis.
Everyone struggles to access this basic right, the right to a home.
I am personally affected by the crisis,
I am 40 years old, a university lecturer and
I cannot afford to rent my own home or buy one,
I therefore stand in solidarity with
those facing this housing problem.
