Teenager George Castillo approached
and questioned by ICE officers Monday morning.
This is video of the interaction that's
been circulated widely on social media.
I was just waiting for my friend like any other day
and I just looked up and I just see the people coming out of cars.
For me, I was like a bit confused and like nervous.
The incident happened at the corner of 86th Street and JFK Boulevard,
just a short ways down the street from North Bergen High School.
Castillo said he was sitting when agents pulled up in a large vehicle,
questioning if he was a citizen.
They were asking me if I was American. I said, yeah.
In the video, you can hear the person filming telling
the ICE agents that Castillo is a minor
and the masked agents threatened to make an arrest for interference.
The clip went viral Monday night,
sparking student-led protests in front of the high school.
I'm not even safe in my own school.
I'm supposed to feel safe in my hometown.
I'm very scared because the situation is going out of hands.
My kids are in the school and I don't see that there
is anything being done to protect the kids. And I'm very concerned.
The Department of Homeland Security told News 12, quote,
allegations that ICE questioned minors or targeted schools are false.
They say they were conducting a targeted enforcement operation
and that the person in question, Castillo, was an adult.
Castillo said he is a senior at North Bergen High School,
but told News 12 he's 18.
Where were you born? Like, what's your status?
And it's just those two simple questions can change your life.
I have a conversation with my 10-year-old.
It's a conversation that, you know,
it's tough to have because it's not easy.
It's not easy to explain to a 10-year-old
what's going on out in the world.
