The Chongyang Festival (重陽節), commonly known as the Double Ninth Festival, carries meanings that extend far beyond the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. Its traditional name, Double Yang, reflects the principles of Yin and Yang in Chinese philosophy and their connection to numbers, nature, and seasonal life.

In this lesson, Mr. He explores the cultural traditions of Chongyang and the ideas behind them, including climbing mountains, wearing zhuyu (茱萸), appreciating chrysanthemums, sharing festive cakes, and gathering with family and friends.

The lesson also examines the literary and philosophical dimensions of the festival through two celebrated Chinese poets. Wang Wei's poetry expresses the longing for home and family during Chongyang, while Tao Yuanming's love of chrysanthemums reflects the Chinese scholarly ideals of personal integrity, independence, and harmony with nature.

Through the Chinese characters 重陽, 糕, 高, and 賞, we also explore how language, pronunciation, and cultural meaning are connected in traditional Chinese thought.

In more recent times, Chongyang has also become an occasion to honor older generations, adding another dimension to its long cultural history.

This lesson brings together Chinese philosophy, classical poetry, traditional customs, and the cultural meanings of Chinese characters to provide a fuller understanding of the Chongyang Festival.
