Well, today I'll be answering
that question and more.
At face value, constant connectivity might seem like just a good thing.
Because being able to have people constantly around you and being able
to be constantly entertained might seem like it'll only do you good.
However, if you look a little closer,
you might realize that all that comes with a price
For example, constant connectivity could influence
the way we speak to people in real life.
This is because online,
we tend to be more rude as compared to real life.
Because online, there are no real consequences to being rude.
However, in real life,
the person might start hating you or even start bad-mouthing you.
As such, constant connectivity could cause
the words that we use online to go into real life.
This actually happened to my friend.
This happened after the lockdown ended
and we could finally start going outside again.
My friend who was originally kind-hearted started being more rude
and using more swear words more often.
This change was noticeable
when a new student transferred to our school.
Normally when a new student transferred,
my friend would be kind towards them and be welcoming.
However, my friend bullied the new student relentlessly,
causing the teacher to step in and call his parents.
After his parents reduced his screen time,
he finally went back to normal and everything
was good again.
Another hidden cost of constant connectivity
is that it could influence our attention span.
Because of the rise of short form content,
our attention spans have been getting worse
and worse.
This is bad because
a shorter attention span means you can't pay attention to important
things like meetings or classes.
This actually happened to my friend.
happened during 2024
when short form content started to go viral.
Now because we were in
primary 3 at the time,
we could not control ourselves on the internet. So we just kept
on watching more and more short form content,
eventually causing my friend's grades to
decrease by a significant amount.
Eventually, he failed the test and his mother stepped in
and reduce his screen time by a lot,
thus causing his grades to go back to normal.
Overall, constant connectivity has its flaws.
Just that its flaws are hidden.
Thank you!
