The story today was all about blood clots,
and I know more about blood clots now than
I think I have ever learned in my entire life,
Dr. Chow, but it's the timing of that story
that is confusing to a lot of people.
Did he know he had a blood clot before he got on the plane to London?
Did he not?
What is the protocol?
What is your experience with this?
Well, not only did he know he had a blood clot,
what type of blood clot?
it makes a big difference whether it's
a superficial venous clot versus a deep vein
thrombosis the deep vein ones are the ones that are more dangerous
and when the announcement came
that the superficial small blood clot there
was movement that's what concerned me last week that
there's extension or propagation
and now of course we have confirmation that it's deep in addition to
deep that there's something into his lungs as well
and that's what the concern is and this is
why when it was first announced we said he
was more likely to miss the season than play in week
seven and now obviously that's come true with the IR
but also he's likely with the lung issues to
need up to three to six months of anticoagulation the good news
though is you should be able to
return. I mean, just this week,
the Eagles played the Carolina Panthers and the Panthers right
tackle this week in week six returned
from his own blood clot issues in the lungs with
anticoagulation. And so there's lots of precedent for playing
and returning to play, but just not
for a while is all unfortunately for Jalen Hurts.
So, so Dr. Chow, you've been a team doctor and
I've been a reporter for a long time.
And so I'm going to further this conversation with you now.
So the discussion that's going on is the way that the story
was reported and how it came out and some of the extraneous things
that have been discussed, too, about him not sleeping for 36 hours,
being on a plane, why in the matter this was reported like this.
And Dr. Chow, in my experience of being a reporter for this long,
I know where this came from. This came from his agent.
There's no question about that. And somehow it got
into a reporter's hands and the reporter puts it out there.
But I want to know what the purpose of that is, Dr. Chow.
What is the purpose here? Is the purpose, because we haven't heard
from Nick Sirianni or Howie Roseman, I'm going to assume we are.
Will they be able to clean that story up?
And that's sort of my issue here in the reporting,
wondering why it happened and why it was brought up right now.
Well, that's an interesting take, and it's a media take.
I did see Nick Sirianni looking
very uncomfortable as he was badgered with questions this afternoon
and just kept referring
to the medical statement.
It was almost unfair for him to tackle some of these issues.
Look, on my podcast this morning, I called BS on the not sleeping.
There's no way a doctor
said to Jalen Hurts, don't sleep because it's dangerous.
That's not part of the protocol.
When you do sleep at night, you actually do rustle and move around,
and there's no reason not to sleep.
And it turns out it was what I thought.
I mean, he was out at the hospital till 4 a.m., got home,
was a little bit restless, maybe didn't sleep well, didn't sleep a lot.
But there's no way that the team is telling
or the doctor is telling Jalen Hurts you can't go to sleep.
That's not safe.
as far as the flights go look yes everyone knows
that if you have a blood clot in theory a long
flight is dangerous but a what kind of blood clot superficial
or deep and b if every lay person
knows it don't you think the eagles doctors know it too look he's
not flying in a middle seat on
Southwest Airlines. It was a first class seat on a 747.
And you can anticoagulate him, use TED hose
mechanical, you can encourage him to do ankle pumps
and take walks and whatever.
And so even if there was a blood clot,
there are ways to mitigate it, etc. So I don't think that
was a faux pas. I mean, look,
if you're telling me the Eagles had no concern about the blood clot
a flight and didn't even worry about it
or address the potential danger then yeah that's wrong but i
just find it hard to believe that that's
the case look i got asked on philadelphia tv earlier today
hey do the team doctors travel with the team
and i'm like uh no the team doctor does not three team
doctors travel with the team and and you know look it's
the same game as at home as it is on the road
if they don't need you at home on the road they don't need you
at home either there's a minimum
of three doctors that went with the Eagles to London for that game.
