The 6th begins with the latest on the shots fired
in the district involving the National Guard.
One member hit, recovering tonight after trying
to break up a fight on Capitol Hill.
We know that one suspect is in custody, but the shooting
is leading to fresh questions about the National Guard deployment.
Fox 5's Tom Fitzgerald live in Southeast D.C. tonight.
And Fitz, what are you learning?
This was a scary situation.
This shooting happened last night around 10 minutes after 11.
There was a group of National Guard members inside a vehicle.
They heard a fight out on this street at Barracks Row.
They got out of the vehicle to try to break it up.
That's when shots rang out.
One of those National Guardsmen was hit in the leg.
Those Guardsmen returned fire, hit the suspect in the abdomen.
We're told both are going to survive.
Now, the White House telling Fox 5 tonight that they are identifying
this suspect as 41-year-old Jarrell Jackson of Southeast.
They say he was previously convicted
of two counts of assault on a police officer,
one count of carrying a pistol without a license,
and three parole violations.
White House also says the MPD recovered 14 shell casings
and a gun in an alley nearby.
Now, that took place near the Cafe 8 bar here on Barracks Row.
The owner tells us that this happened outside of his establishment.
He had nothing to do with it.
However, D.C. Councilman
and Ward 8 Representative Charles Allen wants the restaurant shut down.
He says there has been a history,
in his words, of violent incidents here.
I was briefed during the night and again this morning.
And my understanding at this stage in the investigation
is that there was a dispute, some gunplay.
I know MPD has had to put a lot of resources into this corridor.
I know that my other businesses
on the corridor are sick and tired of it.
My residents are sick and tired of it.
Take a look at this.
The front door of a smoke shop that was located where
this all took place, that got shot out.
There was glass all over the sidewalk.
Now, the owner of that establishment tells Fox 5
that his security cameras captured the shooting.
He says he's turning the video over to police.
Now, this was a busy weekend for shootings in D.C.
There was a shooting near Howard University,
there was one on U Street, there was one up on Connecticut Avenue.
Back here on Barracks Row, folks tell Fox 5 they
are thankful this National Guard member is going to recover.
However, they still have questions about
this deployment that has gone on for over a year now.
We had a fight recently down here.
It wasn't a gun thing, but we had an attack down by the next block.
Because what are y'all here for? Be honest, what are they here for?
We do have some challenges that every once
in a while happen on this street.
I mean, we are in a city.
A spokesperson from the White House tells Fox 5 they are, quote,
praying for this National Guard member that he has a quick
and speedy recovery.
D.C. police say that Jarrell Jackson right now is facing seven charges,
including assault with a dangerous weapon,
assault on a police officer or emergency personnel,
carrying a pistol without a license
in possession of a firearm by a felon.
We are live on Barracks Road tonight.
Send it back inside to Kenneth and Angie.
All right.
