If you're from North Jersey,
you probably know these red farm buildings well.
And in fact, some delicious ice cream memories may come to mind
when you see this cow out front.
But do you know the story behind the iconic Applegate Farm?
Applegate Farm has been around since 1848.
It was a working dairy farm from 1848 until 1929.
Then in 1929, around the time of the stock market crash,
the owners at the time, Frank Oliver and Mr. Tinkham,
decided to start making ice cream.
From 1929 to today, Applegate has been serving up
and homemaking delicious ice cream on-site right in Upper Montclair.
It's now owned by Jason Street,
who took it over from his aunt and uncle,
and this farm is always employing a steady stream of local students.
We employ every summer 50 to 60 high school and college students.
It's a great first job.
While the building itself may get a fresh coat of red paint every year,
they're still using time-honored recipes.
Our recipes date back to the early 1900s.
We have recipes still on index cards that I still have
that we refer back to, like our vanilla has not changed.
But despite the history here, Applegate has never
been afraid to innovate with their frozen creations.
In fact, they've gone a bit viral for it.
We're here in fall, which means everything from s'mores
and cinnamon roll sundaes to apple cider donut dunks.
and we went behind the scenes to see it get made.
A pool of caramel, vanilla ice cream, cinnamon topping,
and the crown jewel, homemade donuts.
The ingredients, only the best.
Homemade ice cream, homemade, right here in New Jersey.
Only one thing left to do, let's actually try it.
And it's absolutely delicious.
