A National Guard member has been shot in Southeast D.C.
We're learning it happened as Guard members
were trying to break up a fight.
Fox 5's Millie Alnwick is live on 8th Street
in Southeast with what we know this morning.
Mel.
Hey, good morning.
And this happened right in front
of the fire station here on 8th Street.
And even though D.C. police have now picked up their investigation,
you can see what was left behind.
There's glass here on the sidewalk where some
of those bullets landed in an establishment's front door.
And then we also know just a few minutes ago a car was towed away
from this alley as well with a bullet hole in it, too.
Now, this happened right around 11.30 p.m.
Now, D.C. Police Chief Jeffrey Carroll said a group
of seven to eight National Guard members were in a van
when they noticed a street fight happening.
The guard members heard gunfire,
then got out to try to break up the fight.
Guard members told a suspect to drop his firearm.
Then the suspect fired a bullet at the guard.
Three National Guard members returned fire,
one striking the suspect in the abdomen.
The guard member was shot in the leg.
Both men were taken inside the fire station,
and firefighters called police to the scene
while they worked to give first aid to those two
who were injured there.
Now, they were taken to the hospital.
Again, both are expected to survive, and D.C. police say there
was no larger threat to the community at this point.
The suspect is technically in custody.
We don't know if he yet has been released from the hospital.
But again, the guard member,
we're told by our sources, has been released.
Now, Internal Affairs and the Criminal Investigations Division have
also been out here throughout the night interviewing witnesses.
And D.C. police say there may still be more people to talk to.
And if anyone out there has more information,
they can text DC Police at 50411.
