Off the top at six, three people
were shot just blocks away from Howard University
during their homecoming weekend.
Tonight, D.C. police are still looking for the gunmen. And
Fox 5's Regina Rita is live in Northwest
with what we know about the shooting and the description
of the suspect. Regina?
Yeah, Katie, and authorities say three people were shot and
injured here on Florida Avenue,
and authorities are still searching for the gunmen. Now,
just a few feet from where I'm standing
is where the shooting happened. I'm told
that the businesses here at this time,
including the Whole Foods just on my right, they were closed.
And just a short distance from here, U Street,
it is known for its nightlife. And then right in
front of me is Howard University,
where students were celebrating homecoming this weekend. Some
students may have headed off campus to nearby bars
and restaurants. But I want to be clear,
this shooting happened off campus.
Police have not indicated any connection to Howard University,
and they have not said that any of the victims
were affiliated with the school.
But some students we spoke to say the shooting happening
so close to campus has them on edge.
You'll hear from them in just a second.
Here's what we know, though.
D.C. police say they got the call just before midnight
on Saturday after reports of a shooting
in the 900 block of Florida Avenue Northwest.
According to investigators, when officers arrived,
they found three people shot, two young men and one adult male.
All three were taken to nearby hospitals
with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators later learned about a fourth victim.
That man was not injured.
police also recovered a firearm nearby but again
so far no arrests have been made and the
investigation is still ongoing i want you to take
a listen to students and nearby residents
i was kind of just out out and about for homecoming
and then um we were coming i was
going to come to towers but people were like running
not running but like walking fast the
other way saying somebody was shooting over here
to me my biggest concern actually would be uh the
parents of the students. It was homecoming.
And when I think about the parents who love their
children and are eagerly looking forward to seeing photos
of their kids celebrating homecoming and to
know that their children were exposed to danger in that way.
And detectives are now looking for
a suspect described as a man with an afro
and a goatee wearing a light colored puffer coat.
If anyone has any information about this incident,
they are urged to contact police. Katie.
