Welcome to Poetry Changes Lives – where poetry, history, and a thought for the day meet.

🗓️ On this day in 479 BC, the invasion of Greece by Persian emperor Xerxes was defeated at the Battle of Plataea, led by Spartan general Pausanias. Xerxes styled himself “King of Kings,” but the proud Greeks dismissed him with contempt, standing fiercely for freedom and democracy.

The mindset of the Ancient Greeks continues to inspire us today — their courage, independence, and devotion to self-rule shaped the foundations of Western civilisation.

Centuries later, the Romantic poet Lord Byron admired the Greeks so deeply that he fought and died for their cause in the 19th-century struggle for independence. His famous poem Isles of Greece captures that same spirit of liberty and cultural pride.

📖 In this episode, I read from Byron’s Isles of Greece and reflect on the enduring importance of defending freedom, democracy, and cultural heritage.
