Camping out of a Backpack.

Hey folks, Joe here. Thanks for tuning in. I'm back in the woods to scout and we're going to do an overnighter tonight. So this is going to be camping out of a backpack. I got dropped off right around 3 o'clock. I walked in and it took me about half an hour to get to this site. And now all I'm doing is clearing away the ground cover, the leaves, all the sticks and everything on the ground. And in my county here we have this awesome soil. It's straight soil. so it's nice and soft to lay on it's very flat and all I'm gonna do clear this area away I'm gonna put my tent here hang a little bit of a tarp here and hang my hammock here if you want to get a full rundown on what gear I brought and why there's gonna be a second video not sure which one I'll post first but it'll be all about the gear that I brought for this trip specifically I'm just getting this just tarp up here now I have pre-made toggles tied on with prusiks on the line for uh makes for an easy setup when i'm attaching paracord to the tabs an easy way to do it is just to loop it put both ends through and put both ends through the hoop you just created with with the paracord and what will happen if you can do it there we go you just pull one one end loose the loose end through i mean and pull both those and then it comes off super easy when you need to come off oh she's a tight fit she's a tight fit just doing a uh taut line hitch so I do on all of them there you go nice and taut it's on a slight angle sloping backwards so I can put my tent right underneath it my reasoning behind that is so that I can have no rain fly on my tent which means I'll get more airflow in there but I'll still be protected from rain if it does decide to rain from the tarp above so best of both worlds it's how I like to do it when I can get away with it it's also good for Sun but there's no Sun in here okay all set up got everything all in there and uh i think i'm gonna have to sleep off to the side like that with pad off the side and everything so scout get in next to me i was just planning on having him sleep out here but seeing as how the mosquitoes are really bad way worse than they were the other day i was here um i don't want to get him him to get eaten alive all night uh mosquitoes can cause worms in dogs and cats so uh it's gonna be a tight squeeze in there with me and him and i hope his nails don't puncture through the bottom of the silnylon but i'm not leaving him out here all night to fend off mosquito attacks you can see my stuff over there it's maybe 20 feet away tops 15 feet away but here i have a nice bench up off the ground i can still relax in my hammock after supper or something like that i was planning on sitting in my hammock but this bench works fine these two poles here act as a back support my spine goes right in the middle of the two and they're blocked on the back by the by the rest of the um bench but like if i get situated properly get a log in front of me those are sturdy i sit back no problem so this will be cool this will be comfortable have the fire here no worry of burning my stuff cook over here and then retire over there later on yeah yeah yeah so i got an angus steak to cook tonight a ribeye nope i got an angus new york strip for tonight so i want to go get a bunch of firewood have a big fire so i can get lots of coals and uh cook my steak up really easily so let's go do that i remember there being a really nice seasoned piece of red oak over here by one of my old camps and i left it there specifically for a time where i was camping here where i wanted a lot of firewood so i'm hoping it's still there we're gonna go try and find her right now so right in the middle there that's the one so getting up close to it i really don't want to take this down this is a substantial piece of wood and it's it's very very nice somebody hacked into it it might have been me i don't think so but um yeah it's big man i don't really want to deal with it right now with my silky saw my little axe this is more of like a winter or a fall time thing i'll come back and do like a bushcraft overnight or in the fall and use this but i'm gonna leave that there that's too choice to to waste i did see something else over here here's a piece of maple right there and it branches off forks off it's got some twigs and it goes substantial down there so i think i'm going to use this piece it's already broken off joe freaking vid plane go on scout good boy super hot look at this bead of sweat dripping off my nose here she's toasty guys she's toasty hey uh i want to stop stop i'm gonna stop and have a drink i got something i got something pretty sweet i brought a actual little cooler inside my backpack just for this reason i've got howler smaller than a growler it's a few beers in here um this is from craft heads this is a micro brewery in windsor a small batch brewery but they're really good this is the first time i brought one home i went there last night and got Galaxy IPA i think it was called very tasty so crack this i'm going to enjoy it so good so yeah that'll be my my fun for tonight but don't get me wrong I'm definitely staying hydrated. I'm not just drinking the beer. That was my first sip of it I just cracked it. I've been drinking water. No, no, like nobody's business. I gotta sit and relax for a bit I worked up a really big sweat. I I processed most of that wood it's just a really thick piece left I'll probably start a fire With the smaller stuff right now and sit here for a bit because the mosquitoes are getting bad I do need to start working on the coals. Oh, man. I'm so hot poor Scout Yeah, see he's got mosquitoes in his eyes and everything already, huh, buddy? Smoke them little buggers out. Some nice wood. It's got a natural check in it like I like to look for. That's what I'm calling the natural check. It tells me that this wood is not only dead and dry, but it's also seasoned. The check can also come in handy when splitting wood. This wood is two inches in diameter. Yeah, maybe two and a half on some of them. With that check, if you aim for that check, it's gonna split the first shot every time maybe it'll take you two or three shouldn't say the first shot but it'll be easier that's my point like that first shot and so when I'm when I'm splitting wood like this I don't have the wood up past the log so where if I hit it it's not gonna do one of these it's down like the end of it's in the middle of the log so this end is in the middle of this log that way if I hit it any which way it's not gonna fling back at me or Scout goes very very close to me right now i'm doing this so i got that right in the middle just didn't split all the way but that was nothing more to split there so i got two out of the three in one shot there we go bam so that's all really good you can even hear it you can hear how dry it is so this steak has fully defrosted which is good see the blood everywhere i got some Montreal steak spice as usual i really like this stuff if i'm not cooking it directly on the the coals which adds a bunch of flavor I will bring the Montreal steak spice I brought Scout dog food this time because the steak isn't very big so we'll see if he eats his dog food or not but I'll end up giving him some some of this anyways I know I always do are you ready for the sizzle oh snap I might even slide it down a touch probably out of frame I'll fix that in a second just cuz there's a little bit of flame you know what I'll just move the flame move the flame away way as best I can. I prefer to cook on coals rather than on flame. Oh, looking good. We're calling this one done. A little wood plate. Ba-bam. About perfect size too. The experts say to wait five minutes to start cutting into the steak to let it settle. I don't know if I can do that or not. It's been one minute. Does one minute count? This grill is pretty awesome. So that was on some super heat this time no warping at all i'm pretty impressed with it i talked to the guy who made them said they'll be available on Amazon in 60 days there's not even a link i can give you or anything i might buy some and see if i can sell them but we'll see what's up with that when the time comes it's been two minutes does two minutes count this beer is super good there's a galaxy hops loving it if you guys are in Windsor passing through craft heads man quality beer so this is a 0.95 liters so almost a liter this will do i'm halfway done it but this will do me fine for today how did i do how did i do oh a bit overdone only a little pink inside but that's okay the steak was in my freezer for like two months so i imagine it's not the greatest texture anyways but we shall see it is Angus so that'll make up for it first bite um on point oh yeah that is tender steak man nice i'm gonna eat this i'm gonna eat it all well that was fantastic i got a little bit left i'm gonna give it to Scope i'm gonna throw some of this kibble on with it try and confuse him come to eat some of his kibble as well all right bud come on good boy Betty buddy sneaky scout good boy so we got a long fire going but i'm not doing it lengthways to where i'm sitting it's basically going lengthways the other way so i'm not getting too warm from it and it's still a Efficient fire. So got a new piece of kit that I'm actually pretty excited for it's the ThruNite new ThruNite headlamp It's a th 20 The reason I'm excited about it is because it runs on a double A battery one single double A battery Now all the other through nights and all the other higher-end Flashlights that I've had have all run on CR123s or 18650s These batteries are expensive 20 bucks a pop or for two sometimes, but this is literally running on one double A so that's really cool I ordered that and then when I did the guys at ThruNite sent me two other flashlights So two of the same kind that I'll have for a backup. So where am I? Where'd she go? There we are. This is the ThruNite T01 It's just a small little pen light turns on very bright turns on by twisting it on Anyways, I have an extra one. They sent me two so I have an extra one I want to give it away, and it comes in this sweet little tin that you can use for a survival kit char cloth or whatever Or don't use it for anything. It's just a tin who cares, but it's a little bonus So anyways they're gonna get the same one I have here. It comes with a little keychain and everything What are the rules I guess just say I'm in for the flashlight in the in the comments I won't do a giveaway video I'm going to just contact you and if you don't answer within a week I want to go on to the next person I've had people not answer at all before once it gets dark we're gonna test these see their functions and everything But yeah, if you want if you're interested in it if you want to have a little backup flashlight I'm gonna give one away, so I'm in for the flashlight in the comments if that's what you do Scott and I decided to go on a little hike around the woods I am seeing nothing but mushrooms here like a hundred different kinds of mushrooms Let me show you and all these here and there's different kinds too. So some different ones over here Here, there's a big one here. I don't know if that's a different kind or not, but it's bigger. Some orange ones, too. Oh, purple. They look white on there, but they're actually like this purpley color underneath. Little Mario mushroom. Scout must have knocked it over walking by. Think it's time to go take a load off in the old hammock. That's why I brought it, right? Just relaxing. Lay down, Scout. Go. Somebody's tired. You gonna make it, buddy? It's about as dark as it's gonna get in the woods now. You can see above me, there's some blue coming in from the sky, but that's even brighter than it is in real life. So let's test out this ThruNite headlamp. So the max lumens on this thing are 520 or 540, I can't really remember specifically, but that's pretty bright. You can see the tarp, you see my tent, you see my hammock. And all you do is you hold it down to get dim, and then when it gets to the bottom, gives you a little flash, then it starts growing in brightness again. I'm just holding it down this whole time till it gets to as bright as it could go. And then if you double click it, it's even brighter has the SOS so let's see about the uh the backup light that they sent to me this is the ThruNite T01 let's kill this light look at that that's pretty bright man i don't know the exact lumens on and off by heart but like for a pen light see my my hammock uh my tent my tarp it's a little smoky that is pretty decent guys like nothing and light up the woods for a pen light not too shabby so again if you want a chance to win this little pen light just say i'm in in the comments and i'll pick a winner it's 9 36 i'm pretty wiped i've got two chocolate covered pretzels left one so i'm gonna eat those up i'm gonna wait wait for the rest of the fire to die down and then i'm gonna head in probably about 10 o'clock i got some firewood stacked up for the morning so i can cook up a uh good breakfast before i get out of here so i'm looking forward to that should be good so I'm gonna sleep good tonight so I put my uh stay back for a sec buddy I put my parachute hammock down in here in the tent so that scope can lay on top of that like I said before I was kind of concerned about him uh poking a hole in the shell nylon come on in right here on this nope right here nope that's my spot over nope like lay down lay down right there Good boy, oh man, this is a tight squeeze bud, this is a tight squeeze. Lucky I love you Scout, get your nose in here. Oh this is cramped. Alright well, we're very cramped in here, the side of my body that's next to Scout is very warm. Alright guys, we'll uh, we'll try to get some sleep and see you in the morning. Good night. How you doing? That was a pretty good sleep, slept from probably around 11 to 7, so that's pretty solid. scout didn't move too much in the tent i ended up putting my head at the other end so my feet were up by him it was it wasn't so bad i had to share the pad a little bit too but he's a good boy about it so nothing left to do uh really except for cook up some breakfast sausages that i brought i'm gonna get picked up around nine o'clock got some stuff to do today so and for me scooter look at this work of art look at that how nicely toasted that is that side's a little on the burn side but that's fine with me nicely toasted i got scouts here grilled up nice mine's almost done i'm hungry man calling this one done hot tamale leave it leave it leave it scout okay good boy eat it good boy go ahead i can't be very cooled off by now buddy see this dog i gave him his own i made him his own he's still after mine I'm sick the wife and kid had it a couple days ago I felt it coming on last night started getting a sore throat and woke up this morning just full-blown cold it's not too bad nothing I can do about it anyway so might as well be out here this is the Robinette trio serves me well silky gone boy Charlie gas can a Gränsfors Outdoor Axe so this is my full loadout for this trip in the summertime overnight camping out of a backpack with the dog so if you have any questions comments concerns tips let me know let me know in the comments I appreciate you watching you give it a comment like subscribe and share that would help me a lot thanks for watching guys I'll see you on the next one goodbye
