New here at 5.30, France braces
for more protests after tens of thousands of people
filled the streets, looted stores,
and started fires across that country.
Once peaceful, marches are now quickly turning into violent riots,
leading to thousands of arrests
and hundreds of millions of dollars in destruction.
Fox's Stephanie Bennett takes a look.
Nationwide protests across France are escalating.
Overnight, police used tear gas and water cannons
and arrested almost 2,000 people who clashed with officers,
ransacked shops and set fire to public buildings it
was one of the most violent nights of unrest
France has seen in years and could cost millions
of euros to clean up i am actually stunned by the
level of destruction and violence
that was expressed i wanted to join the protest but
on the other side there was a wall of riot police
and fires everywhere screams from all sides i'm
telling you i was scared over the past few weeks thousands
of students have been taking to the
streets over what they argue are poor school conditions,
like teacher shortages and deteriorating
facilities.
But now the movement has expanded
and includes anti-government protests over rising living
costs ahead of next year's presidential election.
President Trump weighed in on the violence, blaming it on immigration.
France is burning, he wrote on Truth Social.
Close your borders and take control before it is too late.
And other U.S. officials say France's leadership
is allowing the protests to get out of control.
