A community tries to heal after three children
and a teacher were killed in a mass shooting
in Bend, Oregon, where the investigation stands tonight.
Clouds and showers have moved into the region
with more fall weather to come.
Plus 13's Tilden Carey will walk us through what to expect.
People are really hungry for an opportunity
to get together and use their voice.
Across the country and here at home,
why this weekend's national No Kings rallies
feel a little different with the midterm
elections right around the corner.
Good evening, I'm Frankie Thompson.
We begin with a growing memorial outside
of Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon,
following a mass shooting that killed three students
and a teacher on Thursday.
Flowers, candles, and keepsakes lined the front of the school campus
where a 16-year-old shooter opened fire on a special needs program
before being shot and killed by an armed bystander.
to have somebody that just came
and not only was prepared but willing to go in
and i'm amazed at the teacher um who
was defenseless with a just basically a cell phone
and her own strength and i can only pray to god
that i would have any kind of that courage if that
were ever happening in my situation police say
the shooter was a former student at the school
but have not specified a motive the 16 year old broke
into the school with a shotgun purchased
by his mother. The investigation remains active
as police try to piece together what led up to
the tragedy and how the teen obtained a trove
of ammunition found at the scene. A 15-year-old boy
is in stable condition after being stabbed during a fight.
It happened around 3 30 this morning near
Freeland on Whidbey Island.
Deputies were called to an area off of Fish Road where a fight between
a group of teens escalated after an 18-year-old stabbed
the 15-year-old. That suspect was arrested
at his home in Oak Harbor and booked for first-degree assault.
The victim was airlifted to Harborview for immediate treatment.
The Island County Sheriff's Office says
this case is still being investigated.
Seattle joins dozens of cities nationwide,
hosting No Kings rallies just
a couple weeks ahead of the midterm elections.
FOX 13's Shira Masuzawa spent the afternoon at Seattle Center,
where voter turnout was top of mind.
Organizers say today
is all about turning people power into voting power,
And they say they're here to celebrate voting,
but also to make a plan to vote early.
And today's rally is the largest one happening here
in Washington state today.
Singing resistance.
Thousands gathered Saturday at Seattle Center for the No Kings Rally,
marching over from Westlake Park for a voting fair.
People are really hungry for an opportunity
to get together and use their voice.
Seattle Indivisible President Kathleen Carson says Saturday's event
was centered on people's right to vote
and information about how to vote,
what issues are on the ballot, and even election protection.
Voting is, I've heard it called,
voting is the entry into the palace of democracy.
It is not everything, but it is the first thing that we have to do.
And it's one of those rights, rights if you don't claim them,
if you don't exercise them, they go away.
And so we want to make sure that our people
are out here exercising their right to vote.
She adds Saturday's rally is a commitment to non-violent action
and is a protected expression of their First Amendment rights.
A memorial honoring the 85 lives lost to ICE was also on display.
It's important that we answer people's questions
that they may not get from some other source.
Rosella Van Meter has attended the No Kings rallies in the past.
And this one isn't so much of a rah-rah one as the others are,
but it's still important.
We have to persevere if we have objections
or things that we want to happen.
We have to work together. We can't do it by ourselves,
and neither can our congresspeople, so it's important to work together.
And organizers say this is one of nearly 3,000
No Kings rallies happening across the country today.
In Seattle, Shira Matz is out of Fox 13 News.
And get out there and express your feelings.
As Shira just mentioned,
thousands of No King's events are taking place across the country.
Organizers describe the rallies as nonpartisan efforts
to get out the vote for midterm elections.
Volunteers are educating people on voting rights
and helping with voter registration.
November 3rd is election day and it's a weekday
which is harder for people to get off work and get over to the polls.
So vote early.
The No Kings movement began in an effort to denounce what some say
are authoritarian actions of the Trump administration.
It's another busy weekend on area roads
with plenty of closures and lane reductions.
Fox 13's Adam Gerke shows us the trouble spots.
We are in the midst of another busy weekend on our roads around
the Puget Sound, northbound 405 through Bellevue.
Let's begin here from southeast 8th to northeast 4th.
The roadway is completely blocked in the northbound direction.
No good, and that's the case until Monday morning, 5 a.m.
We've been seeing a lot of construction happening in through,
say, Bellevue or Renton or Bothell for these last several weeks.
This is the continuation of that,
and this continues to make things very, very challenging for us,
thinking about detours on surface streets to the east or to the west,
or just avoiding 405 altogether and sticking with I-5 this weekend.
I also want to point out we're going to see restrictions
on eastbound I-90 from 18 leading into North Bend.
You're going to lose the two left lanes.
That started early this morning, 6 a.m.,
continues to Sunday, 9 p.m., putting extra pressure
for drivers trying to get from 18 to North Bend along I-90.
Worth pointing out, also happening in downtown Seattle today,
a No Kings rally, and that is happening at several locations.
One group is gathering at Seattle Central,
another group is gathering at Westlake.
Seattle Center to Westlake will be traveling on Pine,
coming down off of Capitol Hill, and Westlake
to Seattle Center will be traveling on 4th Avenue, moving north.
This is all supposed to take place between 2 and 4 p.m.
And historically speaking,
No King's rallies and events are usually very peaceful.
But it is advised that if you are going to be parking
on the street in the area, maybe consider not doing that.
And maybe not consider having any packages delivered
into the downtown Seattle core until after 4 p.m.
Just some food for thought.
But that is expected to be happening today.
And that is a lot on our plate.
Guys.
What a difference
a day makes after temperatures reached the 70s on Friday.
Clouds and scattered showers moving in for our weekend.
Let's check in with FOX 13's Stephen Kilbreath.
We've had a pretty interesting last couple of days here
in the northwest with 77 degrees on Friday.
Today started with some showers and some fog
and some breezy conditions in the morning,
but that died down as the day went on.
So overnight, we're actually going
to see mostly clear skies, dry conditions,
and a cooler start to your Sunday
with 46 degrees in our overnight temperatures.
And then tomorrow, cooler still, 59 degrees,
even though the average temperature is 60 degrees.
So we're going to be a little bit below average
for your Sunday, October 18th.
Dry conditions, cooler,
and a mix of clouds and sun is on the way for your Sunday.
So maybe a great pumpkin patch day because it's going
to feel like fall if you head out to the pumpkin patch.
All right, let's take a look at the highs tomorrow,
59 in Seattle, 59 for Olympia, 60 in Centralia,
A 54 Friday Harbor and 54 for Port Angeles.
57 in Bellingham as well.
So those temperatures, as you can see,
in the upper 50s to right around 60 degrees for your day on Sunday.
I'll be back in a few minutes with the complete forecast.
And a look at your seven-day forecast is on the way.
The Seattle Sounders return to the Pacific Northwest
for a matchup against Montreal tonight at 7.30 at Lumen Field.
That's where we find FOX 13 sports anchor Lauren Helmbrecht.
Lauren.
Frankie the Sounders are back in Seattle after going one
and one on their road trip this week
and despite their loss to Dallas on Wednesday
the Sounders are still squarely in a playoff position
sitting seventh in the Western Conference
their competition tonight Montreal however
is last in the Eastern Conference this is the first
and only meeting of these two sides this
season and the last time they faced off back
in 2024 the Sounders won handily five to nothing
And we could be seeing history in the making tonight.
Captain Christian Roldan is set to become just the second Sounders
player ever to notch 300 career MLS starts when he takes the pitch.
Roldan and the Sounders look to move past
their 1-0 loss to Dallas on Wednesday.
And also hope to take advantage of the fact that Montreal
is set to host the Canadian Championship in just four days.
Regardless of who they put out,
because they've got a game on Wednesday,
Canadian Championship, I don't care who it is.
We have to start off this game
on the front foot and score the first goal
so that we can play with the lead, control tempo,
do some of the things that we've done well during
the streak where we're winning games.
And the Sounders are no longer riding that nine-game unbeaten streak,
but they look to start a new streak tonight, taking on Montreal.
First kick is at 7.30 p.m.
Reporting at Lumen Field for Fox 13 Sports, I'm Lauren Helmbrecht.
One person has died and more than 20 others were hurt after
Russian airstrikes hit several residential buildings in Ukraine.
Authorities say at least eight bombs
were dropped in Kherson on Saturday.
Ukraine's president says the latest round of strikes also targeted
at least 15 civilian infrastructure sites across the country.
The strikes come on the heels of President Trump's executive order that
suspended a Russian sanctions package passed by Congress last month.
Pope Leo is back at home
at the Vatican just four days after surgery for lung cancer.
The procedure at Rome's Gemelli Hospital confirmed
a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma.
It's the most common type of lung cancer.
Doctors removed the lower lobe of the 71-year-old pontiff's right lung
where the cancer was found earlier this month.
The Vatican says the Pope is expected to recite the Angelus Prayer
from the window of a study on Sunday.
All right, stay tuned.
There's much more news ahead and your extended forecast
coming up right here on Seattle News Tonight.

election day is just over two weeks
away which means time is ticking
for you to cast your ballot
fox 13 sam campbell is in renton outside
the king county election office we have now officially
passed the deadline for counties to have mailed out your ballots to you
and that means you have
17 days left to drop it off at a ballot box just like
this one right here but if you're planning
to mail it, it needs to be stamped by election day,
November 3rd, although the USPS suggests
doing so by October 27th, just to make sure there's time.
In total, 5.1 million ballots
have been mailed across the state.
We spoke with a couple folks returning theirs this morning.
I, in the past, I would put it in the mail.
Sometimes if I were coming by, I'd put it in the
box, but this time it's boxed.
I don't trust that it's going to go through the mail.
I think every state is a battleground state, especially now,
because I think people need to take back what so many people
have given away, what so many legislators have given away.
Both Ben and Wanda are enthusiastic about getting the public to go out
and vote this election.
And if you are not yet registered to vote or you need to update
your address, you can do that online, but only until October 26th.
That's nine days from now and eight days before the election.
If you wait past that, you can still register to vote in the midterms,
but it will have to be in person on Election Day before 8 p.m.
So what will be on the ballot?
Well, beyond the local measures,
state legislature, and district-wide races,
Washingtonians are going to see three initiatives
and the state Supreme Court spots on their ballots.
Initiative 001 would roll back student privacy changes made
by state lawmakers last year,
And it would restore the law to what it was when
the first initiative on parental rights was adopted in 2024.
Initiative 638 would require that schools verify the biological sex
of students before they can participate in certain athletic activities.
Initiative 645 would repeal the so-called millionaire's tax,
a 9.9% tax on households making more than a million dollars a year.
We haven't yet seen statistics for Washington State's early voting.
The Secretary of State says those will be online by Tuesday.
If you want to check your voter registration
or your ballot status, go to VoteWA.gov.

Following one of the worst wildfire seasons in recent memory,
prevention and resources are top of mind for congressional leaders.
Friday, Senator Patty Murray and Representative Kim Schrier
toured the Washington State Fire Training Academy in North Bend.
They tell us they were there to learn about the challenges
and needs of firefighters year-round
and especially for the next wildfire season.
The visit comes months after the devastating Spokane complex fires
that burned nearly 10,000 acres.
Schrier praised the firefighters on their continued work
battling all types of fires, not just wildfires.
Murray and Schrier say the conversations will lend insight
to how they approach their work in D.C.
and prioritizing federal funds for our region.
I'm specifically talking to them about grant programs
that we need to absolutely protect in that process
and then moving forward what we need
to improve on.
This administration has really harmed these efforts
by cutting that funding or not spending
money that Congress has allocated for wildfire resiliency
and prevention of catastrophic
wildfires.
This year alone, the rebuilding cost
for three devastating wildfires in the Spokane area
this summer is expected to exceed $1 billion.
That's according to the Spokane County Assessor's Office.
A local grocer who left the country
to avoid federal charges is back in custody.
Friday, the 64-year-old fraudster appeared
in federal courts in Tacoma after being returned
to the US by federal agents this week.
He is accused of pocketing thousands
in taxpayer dollars meant for hungry families.
This was supposed to be a small Tacoma neighborhood market,
but federal prosecutors say Manjeet
Singh turned it into his personal cash machine
by trafficking SNAP food assistance benefits.
Amounting to about $600,000 of taxpayer money
that would normally go towards
people that are the most needy in our communities.
Investigators say Betty's market was approved
to process SNAP benefits in February
2024. But just one month later, investigators say the fraud began.
He stole from Americans who truly needed help.
But Betty wasn't working alone. The US Department of Agriculture says
EBT cardholders traded their food benefits
for cash at 50 cents on the dollar,
while Betty kept the rest as profit for food never sold.
They'll present their card.
They'll say, hey, look, I've got $250 on this card.
You give me 125 in cash, you can keep the rest.
Immigration records showed Singh,
a native of India, entered the US on a visitor
visa in 2010, became a green card holder in 2016,
and applied for US citizenship in 2022.
Officials say he was committing the fraud
while his application was still being processed.
Once he was granted citizenship,
he continued the fraud until June of 2025.
But authorities caught on.
They indicted Betty with wire fraud on April 1st,
2026, and he pleaded not guilty on April 22nd. Just four days later,
He left the country traveling through
Canada before going back to India.
If you think you can flee beyond the borders
of the United States to avoid our justice system,
you are wrong, as Mr. Betty discovered.
Betty's run ended only weeks after the
FBI placed him on its brand new most wanted fraudsters list,
which was shared with law
enforcement and media in the US and India.
Betty was brought back to Washington on October 14th,
where he was taken to the Federal Detention Center in Tacoma.
If you steal from the needy
and you cheat the compassion of American taxpayers who fund
these programs, you will face the firm hand of American justice.
Both wire fraud
and SNAP benefit fraud carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
The FBI says the investigation is still active
as charges could be filed against those who
may have helped Betty organize the alleged crime scheme
or escape the country.
Sound Transit held a pair of public meetings in the North Sound
this past week to discuss plans for the Everett Light Rail Extension.
The agency is now sharing its draft environmental impact statement.
The Everett Extension was approved by voters back in 2016,
laying plans for a 16-mile route from Lynnwood to Everett.
Sound Transit is gathering feedback
from residents for station locations.
The planning process is still in the middle stages,
but construction could start as soon as 2030.
Sound Transit hopes to open the extension in two segments.
The first would be in southwest Everett near Boeing.
That could open by 2037.
The second segment, reaching downtown Everett, could open by 2041.
A special celebration honoring Bruce
Lee's legacy right here in Seattle.
Friday, Bruce Lee Way was unveiled
in the city's Chinatown International District.
The new street sign is a nod to Lee's Seattle connection.
Lee lived in the city, went to UW,
and established his early martial arts school in the Emerald City.
Bruce Lee is more than just a street sign.
It is a lasting tribute to a man whose philosophy, teachings,
and spirit continue to inspire generations around the world.
You can see the new street sign in Hing Hay Park
on the corner of 6th Avenue South and South King Street.
Banana Ball is coming to Seattle.
The party animals will face off against
the Loco Beach Coconuts at T-Mobile Park in a two-game series.
Cheney Stadium in Tacoma hosted the Banana Ball World Tour back in May.
All of the fun is happening April 23rd and 24th.
For tickets, though, you'll need to join
the ticket lottery list before it closes on October 31st.
We've posted a link to join that list.
That's at fox13seattle.com slash links.

It's free to download for any smart TV or any mobile phone.
We'll be right back.
Taking a look ahead to your Sunday,
we're going to be some normal temperatures.
The average high is 60 degrees.
We will be at 59 degrees for tomorrow.
So back to normal as we head on into
the weekend and the rest of the weekend
and the early part of next week.
Cooler temperatures as well and a drier evening for us also.
So definitely going to be pretty much a basic fall day for your Sunday.
Let's take a look at our overnight lows tonight into tomorrow morning.
45 degrees in Everett, 42 in Bremerton.
But take a look at some of these temperatures.
36 in Olympia, 35 in Centralia, 37 out in Forks.
Yeah, it's going to be cold in some spots
for your overnight lows tonight.
And again, those highs tomorrows will
be in the upper 50s to right around 60 degrees
with a mix of filtered sunshine for you tomorrow.
Should be dry for most of the day.
60 for Sammamish, 59 in Kirkland, also 59 in Seattle.
Same thing for Tacoma and Puyallup at 59 degrees.
61 in Auburn and up north 54 at Friday Harbor on San Juan Island
and 57 in Bellingham. Let's take a
look around the USA for your day tomorrow.
83 in Los Angeles which believe it or not is cooler
for your day today. They had 90 degrees
and of course as you know last couple weeks they've seen
triple digits in LA. 82 in Phoenix for your day tomorrow.
72 in Dallas. 66 for Atlanta. Let's take
look at the sunset tracker as you know the sunset
at 6 17 today in one week it'll be at 6 05 the
reason i'm showing this is because we have pre-6 p.m sunsets
that start on october 28th and then
we only have three days of that and then pre-5 p.m sunsets start
on november 1st you can see
november 7th that sunset's going to be at 4 43
because we have our fall back here's our future
cast taking a look overnight into the rest
of the day on sunday just some cloudy conditions
rolling through. Maybe some fog early in the morning,
but then Monday, as you can see, becomes
pretty cloudy. Here's a look at Monday at 7 30
a.m. We're gonna have lots of clouds in the sky
for your day on Monday. So today definitely,
or for Sunday, is definitely going to be the better
day than Monday. Wind not going to be an issue.
Just a few gusty breezes here and there, but
nothing that's going to have any sort of issues impact-wise weather.
Here's your seven-day forecast.
So for Sunday, partly sunny and 59 degrees.
Monday, mostly cloudy and 58. And then you can see we're
right in the upper 50s and low 60s as we head
on into the middle part of the week.
And then some showers return Thursday, Friday,
and Saturday as we head into next weekend.
That's all for Seattle News Tonight. Thanks for joining us.
