Rose & Time
Rose & Time

Marie Walewska, was the most important of Napoleon's mistresses, in that she was the first one to bore him a son, Count Alexandre Walewski or Alexandre Colonna-Walewski.
She was a beautiful polish noblewoman whose father fought for Polish independence.
Poland was partitioned by Russia, Austria and Denmark at the time. The Polish nationalists hoped the affair would add to Napoleon's support for Poland to regain its sovereignty, although their hope was dashed after Napoleon's defeat. Poland only became independent after World War I in 1918.

Marie's son received generous gifts and farms from Napoleon which gave him the title count, but he has never acknowledged Napoleon as his father, as Marie's first husband recognized him as his own son.

Did you know that Napoleon had two sons?
Marie Walewska, Napoleon’s Polish Mistress, was also the mother of his oldest but illegitimate son, Count Alexandre Walewski

After Napoleon arrived in Warsaw in January 1807, he met Marie and danced with her at a ball organized by Talleyrand on 17 January 1807.

The day after the ball in 1807, Napoleon sent Marie a letter stating: “I saw only you, I admired only you, I desire only you”.

Who was this beautiful lady, Marie Walewska?
She was born in Warsaw on 7 December 1786 and her family, the Laczynski, was an old Polish noble family since 1574.

Her father, Mathieu Laczynski, had fought heroically for Polish independence but died early, forcing her mother to bring up six young children on her own.

To save her family from financial ruin, 18-year-old Marie married the sixty-eight-year-old Athanasius Walewski in 1804 at her brother’s and mother’s proposal. She was still married When Napoleon arrived in Warsaw in January 1807.

Polish nationalists placed all their hope in Napoleon as someone who might bring the country back into existence, as Austria, Denmark, and Russia partitioned Poland in 1795.

When Napoleon fell for Marie, almost everyone, including Marie’s husband, wanted her to start an affair with Napoleon.

Marie hesitantly started the affair with Napoleon in 1807. Their affair continued when Marie and Napoleon met other again in Paris in 1808 and again in Austria after the Battle of Wagram in 1809.

In 1809, Marie fell pregnant with Napoleon’s child. Once Napoleon was assured of his ability to father children, he decided to marry a princess from prominent European royalties to have legitimate heirs to anchor his dynasty.

Marie gave birth to Alexandre Walewski in May 1810, 10 months before Napoleon’s legitimate son by Marie-Louise. Her husband recognized the son as his own, and Alexandre Walewski never recognized Napoleon as his father.

Even after their affair, Napoleon still provided for all Marie’s financial needs. In 1812, Napoleon provided Alexandre with farms in the Kingdom of Naples with a significant income and the title of Count.

After Napoleon abdicated, Marie and her son met Napoleon on Elba, and she saw him again after the defeat at Waterloo.

After Napoleon’s final exile to St. Helena, Marie married Philippe-Antoine d’Ornano in September 1816. However, she died a year later from complications after giving birth to her third child, Rodolphe d’Ornano. She was only 31.
