713 and tonight you can also take part in Gallery Tour MKE,
a citywide event letting you meet local artists and view their work.
Our Angie Muzu is live there now with one of them getting ready
for the crowds that are about to start pouring in. Good morning.
Good morning. It is so cool to wake up
and being able to see a variety of different arts,
not just paintings on a wall, but sculptures as well.
And that's just a sneak peek. This is just going
to be a sneak peek of what you can expect on Gallery Night.
four for four here um this year we're joined by Tony
who's the owner of two galleries here in the
Marshall Building Tony we sort of walked through it
a little bit beforehand but tell us really
about what these spaces have to offer for people
that come through these doors the other space
you're in to start with is got Eugene Donner's work it's
his estate um part of 230 pieces that
were found in his home
and then in here we have Karen Loudon's work abstract she's a Madison
based artist you know painting related to nature she does
a lot of work in the yard and walks in
nature so that affects her abstract paintings here yeah
is that really the goal here where it's
Wisconsin-based artists i mostly cover Wisconsin artists yes
um particularly emerging artists
and it's great to be able to give an emerging artist a show of a dozen
or 15 pieces here in
this this space yeah and there's a variety
of things that i mean people can obviously see you
just um saw it just seconds ago for people
who this might be the first time that they go to event
like this what is something that you always tell people
to be mindful of especially when it comes
to artwork that they may not be familiar
with well one of the things i see my job is just to
say a few words to people
because it's easy if you if you don't understand art just to walk in
and not be quite sure what's going on don't
be afraid of it um i'll point to the art just get
people to look at it and begin to enter into it yeah yeah
and even with everything that we're
seeing here is there a certain type of art that you like to point out
or is it just like all around
i do a lot of figurative work i mean Karen Loudon's work is abstract
but you saw next door
there's a lot more figurative work in that artists
for sure yeah are we able to walk back here to see
what's what's behind here i often bring work
from different shows and yeah this is a variety
of artists, particularly from shows that I've had in the past.
Christine Heinrich,
her work on silk, where she's printing
her photographs on three layers of silk.
It's really changed what what she does.
I have Desiree
Fonseca, she's just turned 30, self-taught artist in Milwaukee, great
painter, she does three-dimensional work,
fairly intense, but then she's 30 and
allowed to be allowed to be intense yeah i mean
hey 30 got some youngsters here so that that's
really cool to see that i'm old yeah listen i think age
is just a number i mean if you can do
art you can do art and that is definitely something
that you are seeing here we're just getting
started we have uh plenty more to showcase here
at the marshall building and even other spaces too
but for now brian we'll send it back to you
in the studio as we continue to check out some really
cool artwork here i know looking forward
to seeing what else you have in store we'll see you around
7:45 andrew next event may be perfect for you
if you're looking to stay indoors today local
galleries they are opening their doors
for gallery night mke allowing you to check out art created
by local artists andrew mizzou is checking out one
of the galleries now to give us a preview
of what you can expect andrew good morning good morning we
are in yet another room full of art
and obviously this is a space pam that you have truly made
your own here i feel like i'm just
in art galore color galore over here you're
also the owner of this gallery space here on the sixth
floor what can we expect here
because i know you're not alone here no 22 artists and a variety
of disciplines practices everyone in here
is fully engaged this group is such an interesting
collaborative group of people one of the best group
of artists i've ever worked with yeah and
I mean, I feel like we only have, like,
three minutes when it comes to these hits.
And I'm like, okay, how do we showcase all of it?
But we kind of are, we're just going with it right now.
So I'm seeing a variety of things here.
When it comes to getting a group of artists together,
is there a certain focus of,
okay, they have to have this certain type of art
or art style or anything like that?
It sort of magically always just ends up being very diverse.
and there's poetry in here poetry they have a poet
and paintings of course are
a lot of artists disciplines that they follow
but we also have sculpture pottery
a variety of different things Wow
and obviously this is something that people
can expect when they come here I asked
the last person this too and I'll ask
you this when it comes to art galleries for people
who may not you know go to
these very often what is a piece
of advice that you would have especially
you know looking at such a diverse array of different artwork
and and everything
like that this is a group that you can come into this space
and you'll see them
actually working making their pieces their artwork
and a lot of people who
either collect or go out to see things like
this just see the finished pieces
So it's really great for them to come in here,
meet the artists, hear their stories, talk with them.
And I always encourage everyone that they should
be thinking about starting a collection if they haven't yet,
because art adds so much to your life.
Yeah, and it even continues to stretch down here.
And as we wrap up here, I feel like you put it perfectly as far
as encouraging more people to continue to pursue something like this.
do you feel like when people are able to walk through
these doors it really provides them with
the inspiration like hmm one day i could see myself having
my own space like that absolutely
um a lot of people if they don't do it full-time they even
do it as a hobby you know as something
is for relaxation and mental well-being emotional well-being
and so i think coming into a space like
this with the energy that we have in here
and the amazing art it really does inspire people
it truly is and to see the variety the diversity
of different spaces different artwork and seeing
the artists do the work themselves
this is truly what what makes a very special space so i know we
only had three minutes we literally went through the entire space
or tried to uh at that fact so
if you guys are able to come down here make sure you take
your time go go through each of the
spaces and really get immersed in this entire space
because you definitely don't want to miss
out on the excellence here absolutely i'll send it back
to you you heard it there from the man
please go out and visit you heard her as well thank you guys
so much for sharing the gallery
space with us yeah lovers dreams today
in milwaukee it's gallery night in pay where
galleries will be opening their doors
for visitors to check out and purchase local art
right in the heart of the city
our andrew muses live checking out some of the art andrew what
you found this time well brad we
are at stop number three second floor of the marshall building
and there is plenty to show here
and i kind of want to get right into it frank you're the gallery
owner here we're seeing a whole lot on the walls here
this is a remodeled space too this is a
beautiful space i mean this is there's a wide variety here yeah yeah
so i've been in the marsh
building for 14 years i feature mostly local artists some international
um this show i have
seven local artists that i'm featuring wow okay let's sort
of just take us through what we're
sort of checking out here obviously a variety
of artists here um and different things that we're
looking at even framing too yeah actually
so i feature mostly original paintings oils and
acrylics on canvas and i do all
in-house custom framing i generally look for artists that are
prolific and have a long you know a career of creating art
and creating a style and working
really hard to make a cohesive group of paintings
that i can represent yeah and you even told me 14
years you've sort of been doing this and you've seen
the evolution of the uh you know this entire
event throughout the years you
also mentioned that people from chicago even drive up too
yeah actually last night i had quite a few couples
from chicago i think uh our scene up here is
getting well known more and more
because gallery nights have been going on for 40 years i believe
and i've been down here for 14 which it's been great you know
and they just keep growing and
growing and i think getting more
and more well known yeah yeah as a art hub down here in a big
art community yeah and you're just seeing just
the the wide variety here and even i feel like we're
also getting closer to a popular section
that you say right over here yes Jack Scoville's work um
i think people resonate with these because they're
all you know Milwaukee scenes yeah so they can
identify with them uh
and the red dots mean they're sold right yes correct yeah had quite a
few of jack's pieces last night a number of pieces sold
so it was a good night and today we're here
from 11 to 3. so if anyone likes to come down
and check out the space you're welcome to come in and
enjoy the paintings and yeah it's a great building
the Marshall Building come in lots of people here
Third Ward for sure yeah especially
in this remodeled space i'll even ask you this too
because you said you're you're
a Maya product yeah evolution not just yeah here in the art
scene but also the Third Ward what does it mean now
that more people are are driving here you even
called it sort of this growing art hub
but now you're seeing even more of that you're showcasing
artists on full display here yeah yeah i would say you know
the building and uh Bob Detwiler who
manages and owns this building he's great at supporting all of us
and keeping the building
active and of course the historic Third Ward association
and their promotion of everything
that goes on down here so it's a great community
and we really enjoy it we really enjoy it so if
you're looking for something to do, the Third Ward
is where to come, you make you make it really easy
to really enjoy this space, and this is three of four
and the next one coming up is that
a different building but there's a variety
of things that you can always check out, not just
here in the Marshall Building, but a variety of locations.
We'll get into more of that later on.
But, yes, definitely a lot to see
and a lot to show here at the Gallery Night MKE.
Today is Gallery Day because it is during the day.
So check out all you can see here in Milwaukee.
But for now, we'll send it back to you, Bria, in the studio.
All right. Thanks, Andrew.
We'll be right back after the break.
See you there.
Showcasing their work to people downtown.
Andrew, I'm happy you survived that attack there.
Oh, my gosh.
talking about the the chairs from yesterday oh
my that was entertaining for sure and listen
there's going to be another entertaining day ahead
of us especially here in Milwaukee of course for
Gallery Night MKE with it being uh throughout
the day today it's Gallery Day so make sure you head
out to different locations we're at a new location we're
at the Marshall Building okay all morning
long now we're at a different place you sort
of want to tell them where we're at and i know the
name is pretty familiar to you because it's your own.
Yes, we're at my gallery, which is Torrey
Follier Gallery, and I've been here for 38 years,
I was just telling Andrew, and we represent
probably the largest collection of Wisconsin artists
as our primary group, but it's mainly,
the rest of them are from the Midwest,
if there's not a Wisconsin connection, but they are from
abstract to realistic painters sculptors photographers quite
a great combination
and they're from also emerging to established artists
and right now we're having a show of
Charles Munce, excuse me, stuff right here yes
these are the paintings in here and he is one of my
older artists meaning he's been with me for well 35 years
and yes yes and he's extremely talented
as you can see. He is Wisconsin-based.
He lives just outside of Spring Green in Lone Rock,
Wisconsin. And his work is all about nature
and man's relationship to nature. And they're all
bold and colorful, as you can see.
I mean, they're just great, great, great paintings.
But in there all, I mean, there's quite a variety of sizes.
He works, he's an interesting artist in
that he does several versions of the same painting.
So in other words, every time he
changes the size it becomes a different painting he can add things
to it or remove things and he
all the colors are always the same
and he's a wonderful colorist as you can see he loves color
definitely variety and there's even more back here right well
this is this is the other artists that
i represent they're all through the gallery
and then i have another small show for gallery for
this period of time it's uh from Robert Cook
and he's in the east gallery up front we can go we
can walk through here this way yeah we can go through here
but these are artists from all over
the country well this is represented all over
the country Tom Utick is one of probably our most
prominent artists right here uh
those are all landscapes fred stonehouse another big name in
wisconsin art and we can keep coming through here
because you're tori there's a lot of artwork here
and i've been asking people this question
because it's really interesting with this being obviously
here for decades what is something
that you would you know tell people this is their first time
going to an art gallery they want to learn more
or they're an artist themselves and they
picture themselves no pun intended of their work being
on the walls right what advice would you
give those type of people well if you mean
if they're looking for representation because that's
a whole nother subject okay
and i think artists that look for representation well they have to
have some background.
For me, they have to have a career in art, or sometimes just through
the number of galleries they have exhibited.
That's important. I look for, does the style
match what we do here?
Whether it's abstract or realistic, does it feel the same quality
as what we have? So that's what I look for within an artist,
is the quality of the art.
Yeah. And you're definitely seeing a lot of high quality stuff here,
a lot of nature things.
And I think that's really something that we're putting it on display.
Lisa, I know we're talking about all things nature.
I know you have a lot coming up for us in the forecast.
