The speakers debate whether this move is driven by financial gain rather than the integrity of the sport, arguing that such a large field devalues the regular season and eliminates cherished traditions like conference championship games.
The big news in the college football world,
which is the expanded playoff seemingly being
a guarantee.
The current 12-team format is likely seeing
its final season as we are going to double
the number up to 24.
And I am torn on this.
I, you know, Dave and I had
a really good conversation before we got going here about
the why they skipped 16 to 24 there's some you know
as always financial explanations for that
but what is so jarring to me Dave is the approval rating
of this move is it's not like oh it divides
people no it unites people i would say 90 percent maybe more
of the reaction to the 2014 field is a
negative reaction yeah we we simply don't need it you know
for years people complain they wanted to
have a playoff we should not let
the computers decide it should be more than one game you get
to two games we got to four
then it was like well maybe we should add some more teams to it and six
and eight and they jumped to 12
but i was against the 12 from the beginning i liked the four i actually
didn't like the playoff at all
because i'm old school college football but i get it i get why
they went to 12 there's more opportunities to get
in and there's the money and the non-power
four teams and all of that that's fine nobody needed 24 like there's
no sensible reason to go
to 24 other than money and i get it new day
and NIL these middle of the road teams need
more money to get their 40 million dollar rosters
maybe we should look at that not do that but
nobody needs 24 teams you just don't not in this sport
and then those who like it kevin will throw
the numbers and say you know this is the least amount
of teams are eligible for a championship
compared to all the other sports i don't care it's
a different sport i grew up in Miami with
the old school college football mentality
that if you lost the game in October your season might
very well be all over which would make this Miami Notre Dame game
so important everybody remembers
Catholics versus Convicts well guess what
the loser that game didn't win the national title
it just meant more back then and i get it it's a different era
and and you want to move on and
get to a playoff so all right we got to four we got
to 12 you just don't need 24 right now Kevin
and you and i can go back and forth
and pick maybe seven teams that can win the national title right
now today you don't need 24 you just don't need
that and it's the first time where the college
football people in charge decided you know to heck with the fans
and to heck with what everybody else
want we're going to do it for the money they're
not bashful about it and here it is they got the
money and you're going to lose conference
championship games which everybody loves
that's out the window people love going
to Atlanta for the SEC title gone and it's just
going to devalue a lot of the regular season in my mind
so i am not as uh strongly against it as
most despite my again my big thing um 16 felt kind
of like this perfect meet in the middle
they were clearly going to expand i don't think
the bye weeks are ultimately as valuable against
small sample size but i think your number one seeds
and number two seeds would prefer hosting
a home playoff game really
because they'd be big favorites anyway it's totally fine i also think
an expanded here's the thing guys right some people
are like oh let's go back to four last
year in a 12 team playoff they left out a team
who could have won the national championship and i'll i
will debate that forever
because they left out Notre Dame Notre Dame last year was one of the
three best teams in college football and they left them out
and they got that wrong and i don't care
that Miami played the national championship
because that was actually further evidence
that they would have then left out a very good Miami team
so i was totally fine adding a little
bit more here going to 24 is a is a little jarring right
because we're now getting more byes
actually right the the math on it now
is is really funky here to me i think college football has a
little bit of an issue in terms of when
the playoff begins i think they leave a little bit
of meat on the bone i understand like Army Navy is important
but i think they leave a little bit
you know, meat on the bone with that.
The NFL, because they're the NFL,
they're sharks swimming in water.
They see an open day, they throw a game on,
they call, hey, Matt LaFleur,
tell Jordan Love it's time to go throw 40 passes.
He's playing on a Tuesday night.
Like, they just get crazy with it.
So I think that sometimes has hurt the excitement.
But there is at least a small argument
that two games today that for most people
will not even remotely hit
the radar Michigan Penn State Oregon Nebraska in this new format
still have a little bit of life I understand Dave
your take on that is totally reasonable
I'm assuming is it shouldn't forget all four of them they stink
but it can it can keep some
of the back-end games still
with a little more oomph here in our regular season
