Hey guys, how you doing?
Today we're going to the woods.
I'm in my Jeep right now.
We're headed towards Scott's place to meet up with Scott,
the guy from my Camping with a Subscriber video.
But not only are we going to hang out with Scott,
we're going to hang out with his son, Griff.
He's a young man who's wanting to get into this kind of stuff.
He's been camping in Algonquin with his dad and stuff.
We're just going to try and instill some more skills onto him.
I got some goodies for him.
It should be a fun day.
We'll go hang out in the bush and have
some food and hang out for the day.
So stay tuned.
I think you'll enjoy this one.
I'll get back with you guys once I'm in the woods with those guys.
Alright guys, we're out in the woods.
We've got Scott and Griff with us. Say hi buddy.
So we're out here in the woods today.
It's a pretty cold, windy day, but that's not stopping
us. We've got stuff to do,
a flint and steel fire to make up some charcloth. So let's get
started on that. We'll get up into the woods
in a little bit here and get a little bit
warmer. So Griff, in order to blow our embers into flame,
so we're going to need a tinder
bundle. What are you grabbing there?
I just found a dead stick, so I thought this would
what do you got in your other hand yeah
a bunch of dead grass seems like a great
idea to me dead plants what another good
thing we're looking for is something
fluffy so if you look over here we got
this these reeds they're called frag
mites they're an invasive species
and they're super fluffy if you grab a
couple of the seed heads there I think
that would be a good addition to your
grass you don't have
three hands perfect
okay so what I would
do with those is I
would not see your cargo pockets there
on the side of your pants I'd stuff
those seat heads right into there that way
when your mom washes your clothes
it's gonna get all no seriously I would put them
in there for sure we can put
Put them in a backpack too if you want them.
Stuff them in there?
Throw them in the back.
Yeah, they're walking through, eh?
Their deer prints melted a bit
in the ice. Cool.
We're still making our way over to the
woods proper, but there's a little tiny
patch of sassafras, and as we were
coming through it, I thought it would be cool to show Griff
the smell that
the sassafras gives off on their dead twigs.
Why don't you grab...
There you go. Break it up.
off first to release it a bit. Yep,
then smell where you broke. What do you think that smells
like? There's a pith in it for sure.
Yeah, that's called a pith. What do you think it
really smells like? Smell it again.
Like a flowery thing? Yeah. You kind of get like
a citrusy smell. Yeah, like an orange.
Yeah, like a candy orange. It's kind of nice, eh?
So the roots of it,
actually you can make like a root beer tea out of it that has like
an old higher root beer kind of taste.
It's really, really nice. You don't want to drink
too much of it though because there's stuff
in it that's not really good for you.
But a tea every once in a while,
once or twice a year would be no problem.
These sassafras trees have leaves that come out in three shapes.
One looks like, just like an oval like this.
One looks like a mitten.
And then one has like three, like three lobes.
So they come in very different sizes,
different shades, different patterns.
It kind of makes it unique.
Mulberry does that as well that's very similar to this.
But yeah, if you come back in here in the summer,
you'll see what I'm talking about.
And the leaves actually have a really good citrusy smell.
It's a good wood.
It's a good wood for burning, for carving. It comes out like orange.
Aren't you happy to have learned that, Griff?
He's a sponge, man. He's a sponge.
Let's tuck this in here. You're contrasting too much.
You've got to have your looking good for the camera.
It's all about the video, buddy. It's all about the video.
Griff, there's a sasquatcher boat.
You ever hear about this?
That Sasquatch make these things?
Yeah. Bigfoot.
You know what I'm talking about? You ever heard that?
Sasquatches make tripod things?
Yeah, man. Let's go check it out.
Does it smell like Sasquatch over there?
I don't really want to get too close
Right, I'm just completely joking about the Sasquatch thing
They do say that in the wild
when you see things piled like this is from them, but it's not yeah
I've seen this out here plenty of times
in different spots people do this and then that's about it
They'll kind of always just leave it like that, which is whatever
Yeah, it's just fun exactly it's better than a tarp or something
Right you could wrap it right around
it's very true decided we're gonna get
a fire going first before anything just to
kind of take the chill out
so go around cuts collect a little bit of firewood
there's an axe Griff you're pretty hyped
on using an axe Griff do you have any
interest in using this knife over out here check check
her out see what she's
all about careful it's sharp okay how does it feel
not of approval all right well let's go through
a little bit I'm sure your dad's
already taught you knife skills
but we'll just make sure you're careful with it
and yeah have some fun with today
and no worries but so Scott's showing me up
over here, what kind of drone is that
again, my next, yeah it folds down to
pretty
small I'm
pretty
impressed
already
going into
this dude
I guess
that's
what they do right
Terminator stuff
that's pretty cool
that that drone's not
very heavy and it was doing pretty cool stuff
so maybe it's something to look
into right now we're on the search
for firewood I'm gonna go out here and grab
some aspen, some dead dry standing trembling aspen, there's lots
of oak in here we can use too
oak twigs like this a lot of times
these pretty dense oak twigs are just laying on the hanging
off the uh the
oak i'll grab
that i'm on my
way back in the
woods here me
uh yeah you're
good yeah
okay cool yeah we're gonna let griff buck up
this piece of aspen with the axe this is a 19 inch
whittling axe we've already gone over
that because it's such a small short axe we want to
be closer to the ground kneeling or at least squatting
so that when the axe isn't the axe
isn't going to hit us it's going to hit the ground
if we miss right we've already got food
okay so let me just show you real quick what i
do and i'm sure you you're probably pretty good at
this already but if you're chopping
or bucking you don't really want the log to be moving around
too much so put a foot on there yeah
but be kind of over to the side so what i do is like put my
foot on there and I'm over here
and I'm just kind of and you don't really
necessarily have to go this way
and then that way like you see a lot of people
doing all the time with something
this small you can probably really just hit
it a couple times in the same direction
with an axe this sharp and it'll probably
chop for you so why don't you give
that a shot come on over here careful she's
sharp yeah go down a little bit more maybe
if you can can you put your knee
on the ground or yeah you know like that yeah there you go
and then hit it right
where the log touches the other log
because if you hit it here it's gonna
kind of create resistance
so when you're hitting it
you don't really oh you are
left-handed aren't you oh let's switch you around
that sorry buddy how do you
swing an axe show me okay do it
do it yeah you go that way don't you okay do
it that way let me see okay let me
um when you're gonna swing the axe you hold
this way right with your show me how you hold it sorry
with your right hand on the bottom okay so
when you when you're holding it try
and bring your hand down slide your hand down as you're
swinging instead of like so it's more of like
a motion like smooth try that and then we'll switch
you directions yeah keep going hold
on there you go more
of an on an angle you're good you're good
no you're good man you almost got it hard get mad
at it yeah there you go buddy okay now let's try
the other way
because I think you might be a little bit more comfortable the
other way so go on that side of it take
that sit pad measure where you're gonna
swing though because it looks like your legs a bit close buddy
maybe move your leg a bit back if you can
is that more comfortable for you or
no remember hit it hard
be confident yeah see right
away man very good very
good job okay hit it right where
the wood touches
the the wood yeah yeah yeah
there you go buddy you got it
very good job yep that's the last
one there you go go ahead man
step on it
do it nice very impressed yep
so i put on like the yeah
the edge of it there you go
right there so griff's made a nice amount of curls
for us already just finishing up and we're going
to uh we're gonna get a fire going how's
that knife working out for you buddy nice nice we're
gonna start a fire we've already got
our little base down here we don't want to
start the fire on the ground it's very wet and cold
and all that stuff oh you're doing the platform
perfect yeah that's exactly it yeah so put this on top
and let that burn yep so what we're gonna
do is you're gonna strike your fire still on this fragmite's head
but before you do that we want to
have our shavings and stuff very close and ready
so as soon as you have that on fire you're gonna
put leave that leave that on there grab
this put it on top grab these put it on
top and then we'll start to put the grass on top
and our fuel kindling and
fuel pieces right after that so you can place
that right down on the on the on
the wood put your fire steel right down into it
but like push down with the fire
steel onto the wood scrape hard you already use
this you know what you're
doing right so this sparks like crazy okay
so you can literally just be like
Oh, wow. Yeah, this is a good, a very, very globby one.
So make sure you can just do it in the air first beforehand.
Do it on the spine of the knife.
Sorry, I know. Okay.
All right, go for it now.
Try and put it as
close as you can to it so that the spark has farther,
I mean, sorry, less, it's the tremor.
Why don't you, why don't you plant it right in there
and try and do it that way. So put, yeah,
exactly. There you go. That's it. Just like that.
It's going, it's going. All right. Yes. Grab your
shavings quick put them right on right
on top yep right now yep grab all those
ones put them on top too. Good job buddy. Way to go bud.
We'll get that grass on top of there too we'll just
wait for a second till this grows
a little bit see how the winds pushing it
this way that's good
because there's lots of curls on this side to catch so
drop that right on top you don't even have
to be yeah drop that on top too
Yep, you're good. Right on top. Nice.
Now we'll just move our stuff out of the way.
I was just going to say, hey, Joe.
Very good, Griffin. Good job, buddy.
All right.
I'm better than I expected. Not gonna lie.
Yeah, very good. No, you did very good.
So we need to start getting some logs on here.
So maybe...
Our pile from here.
Yep, some of that.
We can try and look for the smaller ones at first.
Very good.
Yeah, yeah, it'll catch faster that way. Yep.
Cheers, lighters.
Come on.
Enjoying the fruits of your labor.
You've not made char cloth before?
You know what it is?
Okay, no problem.
So char cloth is what they used to use with flint and steel,
still use with flint and steel,
and we'll do that later on if I can get this open.
So this is just a tin.
We'll poke a hole in it because there's such a tight seal on it.
Inside it I have pieces of cut up blue jeans, right?
Just normal jeans like you'd wear or whatever.
So these are denim, they're made of cotton,
and there's a bunch of squares inside there.
so the idea is well we're going to char it
and then we're going to deprive it of oxygen so it
won't ignite like it won't combust
into flames it'll just kind of char like like charcoal does
you can use the same with this and very uh charcoal like
with punk wood or mushrooms and
buried underground is the same idea
but so the idea is just not giving it any any air to we're
gonna poke a small hole in this and put it right on top of the fire
and then when it stops smoking
we'll take it out and we'll be ready to use it'll only take like five
or ten minutes so how are we
How are we going to poke the hole in there?
Well, I'm just going to use the axe to poke a hole in the top
because I used my knife.
That's it. That's a pretty big hole,
but that's what happens when you use an axe.
I'm sure it'll still work.
We're just going to put this right over here.
It should start smoking on the top,
and then when that stops, like I said, we'll take it out.
We'll use our gloves, too. We won't touch it with our hands.
I was just about to say, did you break yourself?
No, no.
Is your
oven on?
I
had
to
do
it,
I
had
to
do
it.
Alright, so we're sitting here,
Scott's kicking snow into the bacon.
Got bacon on, got some tea.
We got eggs in the pot there.
What do you got going on?
What? Nice, you all warm?
You got one up on me then.
Old Joe forgot to put on his long johns today.
Our char cloth is done.
We'll check that out here in a minute.
I think we're gonna eat first though, cause we're pretty hungry.
I'm a pretty hungry boy. It's a nice day out in the woods though.
the woods though. Alright, these eggs I think are done.
Butter's all boiling off.
That's okay, we're going to show this over here.
I'm going to use that for a while. Dad's got it.
It's all part of the experience, buddy. I got it.
We got somewhere to put these. Bam!
Look at how thick that is. That is pretty fancy.
Whoa, is that a bubble from egg? It is what?
A bubble? What? Oh, I see like the metal.
Underneath? Yeah. Yeah, that's part of the egg stuff to it.
Alright, another one here, another second one.
Eggs, cooked some bacon up, brought some pitas,
we got our teas, these are all good.
Joe is such a professional,
his eggs are getting cold as he plays with his camera.
That's how dedicated he is.
Dedication, alright.
There's the master right there, eating his eggs.
We got bacon eggs, pita wrap,
thank you guys for the bacon and the pita,
bringing the whole meal together.
Look at that, that looks good.
Probably one of my favorite moments of our family trip
to Algonquin this August, past August.
My daughter, like day five of the trip, I went to pass or something.
It was some sort of food.
I forget what it was.
Dropped into the dirt, right?
And I looked at her.
I was like, she looked at me.
She's like, I don't care.
Yeah, I guess.
Just give it to me.
I can die happy.
We beat her down.
Yeah, right?
Yeah.
On her level.
When she first started, she's like, oh, you know,
there's a pine needle in my tea or whatever.
throw it in the garbage that's awesome
this works a little hot sauce
or something in there too
okay so we've got
our charcoal char cloth all done nice
and black i'm gonna go i'm gonna give
it a test all right buddy so i'm gonna do this part of it
and you're gonna blow it into flames
okay okay so the only reason i'm doing this part
of it is because i only have a knife i could not
find my fire steel or my sorry my piece of steel for striking it
but i will get you one i got to
to get one anyway so we got our char cloth
the safe way to do it the normal way to do it is with
a rock and a piece of steel you can actually use
an old uh file if you have an old file at home you
can cut it off an old file yep old like uh normal just a file
and use it yep a file after you're
done work you're just like and then i just got a piece of flint here
which is a normal piece of
rock which has a sharp edge and is hard
so just back up a touch please thank you you're good
You're good, you're good, there you go.
Alright, you ready?
All we're gonna do is pinch the knife
so that it's not on my right.
And we don't really wanna use a,
yeah, you don't really wanna use your wrist,
just kinda come down straight on it.
Yeah, I'm cutting
myself up pretty good.
Okay, we got it.
You see, she's caught and she's growing.
You see that?
So what we're gonna do, remember I told you,
we're gonna face into, or sorry, away from the wind
so we don't get, smoking ourselves.
Here, grab it, and I'll bring the camera around.
We don't want to breathe in smoke
is the point I was trying to make.
So, turn a bit more towards me.
Yep, you're good there.
Can you see it growing?
There, I can see it growing.
Keep giving it steady air.
Try to give it steady air.
There you go, yep.
Yeah, now take longer breaths.
Oh, you got it.
Let me see.
Good job, buddy.
Drop her.
Just drop her anywhere.
Good job, Griff.
You okay?
Terrified myself.
Are you happy?
Did you burn yourself?
You're welcome.
Thank you for that Griff.
That was pretty cool.
I appreciate that.
That was pretty
cool.
Just like with the rock starting like how you just banged
a piece of metal on a rock
and it was kind of cool how Joe did it
and he just made it catch on fire and then the
Well you made it catch on fire buddy.
The blowing sequence was pretty neat.
I never thought about that so I'll have
to think about that for further trips and stuff
so that was cool.
Right.
Yeah and then you could just add like
And then it just lit on fire so that's like I guess
a fire starter or something so
Yeah you did a really good job.
That's cool.
cattail or inner bark of other kind
of trees like cottonwood or aspen or ash.
Just something really fluffy and light.
Very good job buddy. Give me a pounder.
Bam son. So Griff you've been using that knife a lot today.
I think you've been
getting along well with it.
Why don't you uh why don't you just hold on to it for a
while and yeah yeah and see just use it
and be careful with it and take care of it.
yeah no problem buddy good stuff buddy
surrounded you know what else you can
do you want to see
something
cool here
leave
that right
in there
okay one sec
sorry pass
me tell me
what we've
done already and what we're gonna do we just shaved
this little piece of wood into a little
wedge yeah and then we're gonna put it down this piece of wood
and hopefully split it
yeah and uh we're gonna try to split it
and see where that goes okay let's do that okay we might
want to make another one and put it down farther
or if you want we can just muscle
through it yeah okay okay let me
let me swing that if you don't
very cool all right one second all right
there you go good job buddy no leaving
it no no that's a very good shot you did
a very good that was a very good job
I'm just yeah I'm just ready
we did it very good now
we got smaller pieces we
can split up even easier look at that wedges
for the win we're just packing up to leave
been out here all day uh yeah you guys
a little sneak peek at my some of my new gear i got a new
pack from Malcolm the Hidden Woodsman updated day
ruck pretty cool nice orange interior i'm not
going to go into any kind of detail right now about it
that'd be for another video but just
got it yesterday wanted to bring it out today
and also you might have seen Griff using my
new adventure sworn mountaineer
which looks very similar to one that i had many moons ago
look at that taper on that tang boy we'll check
that out in more detail later on too but just got
that in as well yesterday
so thanks to Malcolm at the Hidden Woodsman thanks to Cody Adventure
sworn plenty more of this to come in the future oh

That was a D-Roll.
That's Joe Revin
And that's my dad
Yes, we'll give it back to Joe.

Okay, Griff.
Perfect.
Perfect.
Well, guys, thanks for watching.
This is our, this is my second video with Joe.
This is more of a Griff-Joe video.
And, you know what, Griff, did you learn a lot from Joe today?
Actually, he's properly cutting wood.
Did you learn anything you didn't already know from Dad?
from dad okay yeah Joe thanks
for helping us out yeah Griff's all the wiser
for it and we had a fun time yeah I had
a great time too thanks for hitting me
up all right thanks all right boys
Another one in the books oh well that was a
good day it was uh it's cold hey I hope
it wasn't too windy on the camera there
and the in the microphone that was fun it

We're kindling some basic skill knowledge
for myself, too.
So, thanks to those guys for watching.
I got a big trip planned for my next video,
so it should be pretty good.
I'll see you guys soon.
Thanks for watching.
I already said that.
Stay warm.
