A South Jersey community is grieving tonight
and remembering a little girl whose life was taken way too soon.
A nine year old, most of them never ever met,
but her tragic death is bringing them together.
Our Shaun Wilson reports.
This community has a lot of questions like why this happened
and what it's going to take to heal.
Tonight they honored the life of nine year old Maya,
whose parents are in jail charged with her murder.
God with a heart heavy mind perplexed. This
Paulsboro community is leaning on prayer and faith.
If they see something like this going on,
help them to stand out, oh God, and help them to speak to someone.
They're grieving the loss of
this precious little girl, who the mayor said tonight is named Maya.
Pictures of her have been
placed on the fence around the home where
her family lived on the 1500 block of Swedesboro
Avenue, and community members say she was homeschooled.
Her parents are charged with
beating her to death. What's her name? Maya.
Say her name. Maya. This evening, the community held
a candlelight vigil and balloon release near the home.
The mayor said he spoke with Maya's
grandmother, who lives in Washington.
The grandmom is hurting right now, but I told her
this community that did not know Maya, never saw Maya,
would stand for Maya tonight. Leaders of
different faiths offered words of healing.
Parents, when you go home tonight, hug your
kids a little more. Love them a little more.
Investigators say Tuesday they got a 911 call
around 1 a.m. from the parents saying Maya had possibly
been hit by a car while out walking the
dog. But investigators say hospital doctors found facial trauma,
bruises throughout her body and
injuries not from a car.
She was pronounced dead just before seven that night.
Investigators also
say Maya's four-year-old siblings said their dad hit
the girl in the eyes and face. Police say they
found blood inside the home.
An autopsy found injuries in different stages of healing, which
suggests prior abuse. The girl's mom,
27-year-old India Miller, and 45-year-old stepfather, Sean
Scott, were arrested and charged with murder.
This is video of them in court yesterday. Tonight,
this pastor broke down in tears. You and I have a task.
We have to do everything within our power
to make sure this doesn't happen again to any child.
There's no child that should live in fear for their life.
