-- #pewdiepie#joerobinet#whiskey Pewdiepie did a $50 VS $500 Whiskey review about a year ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfjgISRI5E4 Which I always thought was a very cool premise for a video. I was in the market for a good, smokey Scotch Whiskey and did not know what to get, so I bought 5 different bottles of scotch whiskey to find the right amount of smokey, peaty goodness. I Invite my buddy Jake over to sample some fine (and not so fine) Whiskeys from Scotland. We are amateurs at best, we did things incorrectly, we say some silly stuff, but we had a blast, and I hope you enjoy watching. Two self-proclaimed novices conduct a comparative tasting of five Scotch whiskies, evaluating them based on color, viscosity, aroma, and taste. Seeking a smoky profile, they use water to unlock subtle notes and rank the bottles from least to most appealing, prioritizing smoothness and smoke intensity over professional tasting standards.
Hey guys, how you doing? We have a different video today.
We have a special guest, Buddy Jake.
Hey.
We're going to do a scotch tasting. This is a first for me.
First for me.
So we don't really know much.
Kind of newbies.
Big time newbies on the scotch.
So the whole premise behind this, a couple things.
I went to the liquor store a couple weeks ago,
wanted to get a really smoky scotch.
I've only ever had experience with Lagavulin
and Bowmore before and Lagavulin was
cream of the crop to me and ever since then I bought two
or three bottles of different stuff
And it's all gone downhill because what I'm looking for is smoke
So I figured I remembered a year ago PewDiePie the youtuber did a video
and don't knock me if you haven't seen him
Lately go watch a video of his he's actually one
of the better bigger youtubers. He's not a bad dude at all
he did a scotch tasting test about a year ago
and i really it was cool it was cool to watch
so i figured in that vein maybe i'll get all
of these five bottles of scotch and we'll do a video
on it that way i'll know you'll know
and uh i get some content out of it so we'll see we'll see what
we can figure out you know we can uh the connoisseur
in us yes figure out here so jake's been doing a
lot of research as you know i'm not that type of person
so jake jake was the man and took
that initiative
so we're gonna do we doing like a sip first we're gonna look
at the color to see if it's light
or dark and I don't know what that means
but we'll discuss it
in our layman's terms it's light it's supposed to be
sweeter okay if it's dark it's supposed to be I think just more aged or
something to do with the cask it was stored in more sherry cask okay
something like that makes it darker
so we'll compare them anyway I guess see
which ones lightest darkest
and how that affects the taste maybe. I'm going for
have you had a smoky scotch before or no?
I've not had a smoky scotch. Well then. I've had
Johnny Walker red and that is my scotch experience.
So I'm pretty excited.
All right me too. So down the line you've got Tomatin or Tomatin.
Tomatin? You're doing your
best Vanna White. Tomatin is an Italian island.
We've got Scotch whiskey from the
Compass Box called the Peat Monster.
I'm thinking this one might be a little bit
peaty. Says a smoky, peaty, smoky and complex.
The Tomaten is bourbon sherry
casks. This is an IPA experiment.
We'll talk a little bit about each one more
but this is totally different.
I don't even know, is this considered real?
Uh, it's an experiment. So I think it's still a scotch.
It's still a scotch. It's just stored a little
different and having different flavors.
This is the Lagavulin 16 Years. This was
by far the most pricey one at $133.
All these other ones were around $88. This one was $130.
And then the Laphroaig at the end.
Laphroaig, Laphroaig, is supposed to be pretty good.
We've got the Italian one, we've got
the French one. We've got all the scotch.
all the scotches yeah and this one's supposed
to be the smokiest ah five out of five four or five
out of five and this one's supposed to be the peatiest peat
of peat, peat, of peat, so first up is
our Tomatin, how do you think you say
that? Let's say, I think you got it, I think Tomatin, let me
know in the comments, all right, so it's a Highland single malt
and there's differences in between
where it's from, correct? Yeah
so I was doing some reading, I think there's five main ones
I think uh there's uh Islay, I think we have two
from there, those are usually more smoky and then
Highlands are just more uh I think Highlands
is the biggest area so it really ranges a lot
what they mean but they're not necessarily known
for smokiness, all right, and I think I think this
one for example is really low on the smoke uh
the smoke rating right, zero out of five, zero or five
on the smokes, all right
so this is a 12 year, all these are brand new, never opened, what
what happened, so if you follow my Instagram feed you'll know that Jake
and I did a number on this
bottle about a week ago or so, so we're pretty familiar
with how this one tastes, this is the
only one I swear, all the other four
are brand new, we haven't opened at all, yeah they're sealed, we'll
show you um, but it's not very smoky as the zero
to five rating gave it, I think it's a little sweet
this one, so we should just do a little bit
then just a little bit all right well we want to leave
enough to mix a little water
in more you tell me
that's good yeah scotch
glasses yes we're good
so what do we do first jake i think first uh supposed
to give a good smell good smell see
what you can pick out alcohol if i'm being honest
this one yeah there's no smells of alcohol
Yeah, no floral or vanilla or anything.
Nothing really, just alcohol.
Yeah.
People will taste the subtle.
The sip.
The subtle.
So I think, well, we didn't look at the color.
The color is very light.
It's pretty light.
It's not a dark one at all.
Extremely light.
As you can see, it's got a little bit of color,
but as far as scotch is concerned, I think
that's a pretty blonde.
You'll have to excuse my snoring dog.
And then what, do you swirl it?
I think you swirl it.
You give it a little swirl
and you see if there's any legs on the side of the glass.
There are.
There are. There are. Decent amount.
I would say they're pretty... Viscous?
Pretty viscous. Pretty thick.
There's some viscosity in those legs.
We're going to give it a, what do you think, a 3?
3 out of 5 viscosity? Solid 3 viscosity.
I have nothing to do with that
3 is in the middle, so we go up and down on the other ones.
3 it is. Alright.
Let's see it. Let's
see what it tastes.
In my nose, when I breathe out, it just tastes alcohol.
I can't taste it because there's no smoke at all.
There's no... Yeah, it's pretty bland.
It tastes alcohol. That's it.
like it tastes smooth yeah it's not like
a bad very very smooth like a rubbing alcohol or anything
but it's just a really smooth high alcohol kind
of again this one was 80 bucks might even be 60
bucks i think around the 60
to 80 dollar canadian range it's about 30 bucks American so again this is a
highland right and the highland i have
my cheat sheet card here it's from the liquor store it's
real so it's uh the highland the highlands is very diverse
and offer a vast array of different
flavors. Look at you Jake. Be prepared.
Typical Highland flavors, fruitcake. I'm not, I didn't taste it.
Malt, oak, heather, dried fruit and smoke.
I get alcohol. Who's heather? Give it a splash of water.
It's supposed to dilute the alcohol a little bit and if there
is any hidden flavors, you're supposed to be able to bring them out.
Makes it a little easier to discern.
This is a learning experience for old Joe. We got our
little glasses of water here look at this look
at us prepared i want like a little like i think just
a splash i'm gonna follow your lead i think it's just
a splash maybe like no that's too much that's
too much i blew it oh i didn't see it okay it
tastes weak water we're gonna need a new uh
pouring mechanism yeah i'll get a spout we'll just
for sure yeah yeah a bit lighter alcohol
taste i can smell the water
for real do you smell anything
different it does it tastes a little
different different it tastes different for sure
not not just in a watered-down way like it
actually a morph like floral like i get looking
at a floral tone it's a little hard to pick out
exactly what the flavor
is maybe okay well i'm gonna give
this one like a five I don't know
really you know because again what's the scale
to ten ten five i don't think extraordinary but
nothing it's not a bad draft
so I guess five right in the middle kind of where
you'd expect it to it might
be adjusted it might get all of this might get
adjusted yeah everything okay next up the peat monster
so we found a review on
online by dr. whiskey
and it reads cigarette smoking through a meal of
scrambled eggs scallops
and strawberry cheesecake pears a bag of cinnamon sea
salt kelp lemon cheesecake a cloud of peat peaches
or nectarines, fire smoke, he then summarizes it
amazing balance from start to finish, peat
and iodine to fruit baskets then burning leaves
or wood outdoors, distinct compartments of flavor
that harmonize masterfully, it followed a bit too
consonant major thirds and fifths, monstrous cookie monster maybe
and that is tasting notes by Dr.
Whiskey, oh I think Dr. Whiskey is a funny funny
gentleman, Cookie Monster, a shock I think you'll
do that, you'll have to zoom in on the picture of
that monster, wow yeah that's an intense looking
peat monster, you know if one of these guys came
for me, I don't know what I'd do, monster
so this one again, this one's later I think I think
that one, I think it looks like they added
the water for us, perfect, oh man all right
so we're gonna go a little less this time
a little less sketch
Oh, that's clear.
That is clear.
Literally clear.
I'm excited about
this one.
I don't know if it's mainly just because of the box art and the name,
but it is interesting
too.
It is so light.
You expect it to be a little different.
the color is completely different
the name Peat Monster, I was expecting
to be called like chocolate milk
like for real
so this one's a blend, I think
so I don't know what...
it says the idea was to balance beautifully peaty,
smoky aromas and flavors with those
that are malty and fruity.
Yeah, it is blended.
that blending peated single malt whiskeys
from different regions of Scotland
creates a style that is unique in the world of Scotch whisky.
You will find a spectrum of seaside and medicinal peatiness,
along with kipper-like smokiness,
all surrounded by a core of fruity malty whisky character.
Want to try this out?
I think so.
It's pretty clear.
Clear.
Clear. There's no doubt it's clear.
Oh, I smell something different.
Yeah, I know this one smells smoky.
It's really smoky.
it actually smells really good it smells
fantastic very good smell okay legs legs
zero very low there's a little bit
but not as much as something i don't get anything maybe i'm doing it
wrong i don't i don't think you can do it wrong oh yeah okay
but like i had one one the other one was
a three did we go to three
or five that's for sure it's a three for legs we have no comparison no
okay maybe it is a two oh it's
not so bad i guess i think i think i think a two two solid two i think
one would be like that's just a slap in the face just
a slap all right two we gotta leave room for
one yeah so two but like the leg rating
a little bit smoky
this is that someone say peated
not me because i don't
know the difference i think it's a monstrous amount
of a cookie monster, cookie monster
maybe so right away it's a hundred percent different than
the last one like not even in the same bulk that
I don't smell the alcohol in this one, like the uh
the smokiness overpowers the alcohol, correct? I like
this one it's got like
that sticks with you in your
nose like when you breathe
out the smoke it's almost it feels kind
of campfirey kind of smoke like it
feels saturating, I don't know it feels
like it's good it's good it's good I
think I need to pour a little bit more
so I can put some water in mine that's
good it's totally different you want
a little bit more, we didn't get a
different water that was probably
the perfect amount, it was like a teaspoon
Yeah, and again,
it does change the smell but just to in all
in all honesty just to subdue what it was to me
Yeah, what about you? No, I still taste a strong smoke flavor.
Yeah, just even less the alcohol. Did you sip it?
I haven't sipped it yet,
no, I smell the strong smoke flavor, but it just seems
dull. Well, that was different.
Did it change it for you? Oh, not really.
What do you think? Are you picking anything out?
No, I'm not. Are we gonna make any bets?
Okay
Heather
We're all keep saying heather and fruitcake and you're gonna be right.
I don't know why or what we just gotta make a guess
I'm gonna look online. I'm gonna peep. You wanna peep?
Hmm what gave it away?
Yeah, I don't know honestly like
again I get like a more floral
yeah when I add the water
Definitely it definitely changes the taste though.
It does. I find this one's not much
uh even before i've learned i'm gonna burn
when you drink it no burn no smell burn either like
the alcohol no uh i think i've been pretty happy
with that i think i'm gonna make a seven 7.5
for me i go i'd maybe do a six we gotta
do a six yep we still got that we still got room to grow
i hope i hope someone's noted my scottish blanket huh
because it's because we're drinking scotch
okay this is the one I've been most excited about
this is the IPA one this is an experiment when I
went to buy these scotches the lady at the LCBO tried
to talk me out of buying this she said some
people have been not impressed
with it it's experimental so that it means it's a little
bit different every time
because of the IPA cask that it's stored in or what is the word aged in
so I said sounds like a challenge we'll get her and see
so I am interested in this one a lot
it's got a cool bottle this is by Glenfiddich
you guys probably know Glenfiddich it's a common
around here especially it's very common very common
so this is a single malt experimental
and untraditional the brewmaster suggested creating
a Glenfiddich whiskey finished in an
IPA craft beer cask.
Something never done in the industry before.
Sounds like Brewmaster did a lot of hard work
for the people at the
liquor store to tell customers
not to buy it.
Hopefully the Brewmaster doesn't see this.
Poor guy. He'll be angry.
I don't know how long it's aged.
43%. The experiment is
it's not aged. It's not aged at all.
That was almost like
a champagne. It's a clean one.
Entries in the Glenfiddich
Experimental Series.
So this is a pretty like
popular run-of-the-mill
like everyday
So it's just it's finished
in casks seasoned with India Pale Ale.
It smells peaty or smoky
I'm not sure what the difference is,
but not as much as the last one. No, it's no peat monster
No, no, it's not a monster at all. It's just an experiment
But there's a little alcohol though
It feels like somewhere in between
yeah
the first
nothing
and peat monster
I hear you
that is true
I don't smell anything
but that
little bit of smoke
little bit of
I've described
the taste
as burning
okay
it's got
it's got a burn to it
for sure
it's got some decent legs
holy
she got legs
I skip legs
skip leg day
every day
never skip leg day
that's uh
decent legs on that one
actually
very syrupy
yeah
might be
might be four
she's a four
easy
I wish I knew how
these people
got these notes
and these
tastes
and these like
different
specific you know what I mean yeah I don't really
see it practice practice we just gotta practice
drink all these bottles over and over again
keep drinking until you remember Google yeah
it's a bit stingy on the throat yeah it's got more burn
the last one didn't the last one went
down smooth. A splash
of water in this one. Oh!
Dirt it! What do I do now?
What do I even do?
See, that one
changed big time.
I taste almost like
a cinnamon in that one.
I see that. Almost, uh, see this one I'm thinking floral kind of.
Okay. But I didn't notice that in the last one.
There isn't a stronger taste of something in this after.
No, yeah, I'm just, yeah, something's, there tastes more in it.
It definitely changed the taste. Complex. Uh, with the first one,
Thompson, it didn't change the taste at all like now. Right.
just alcohol it was the worst
by far yeah it's it was it was smooth but it
gave it gave nothing other than
that right like I can't pick out the flavors
these last two
but this is it they're
there they're the last
bottle it's the
strip scratch for real we looked at some points
on that last one the IPA just to
see see what flavors we were supposed to find and I can see where the
experimental part might be coming
into this based on these flavors all right so
when you the nose did you smell candy
necklaces what a lemon zest milky corn
flakes with a sprinkling
of white sugar I didn't I didn't pick these up I wish I
did because that would be interesting it'd
be a lot more entertaining yeah it's
like a bowl of cereal yeah that's what I want
to think of when I'm drinking scotch
old soggy bowl of corn flakes.
Yeah, so it gets better. So the finish, that Ovaltine,
Ovaltine finish. Cocoa pop. Hints of damp green leaves.
So it's, you know, the one interesting
thing, and then everyone else will say it,
but cinnamon is in the flavors. Really? So yeah,
no florals. How is cinnamon in the same ballpark as milky?
It's in there with a sprinkling of white
sugar oh yes yeah next up the fro
the frog the frog is French
guy yeah oh so this is the one
when I posted on Instagram my number one
Tomatin they were saying get this get
the frogs I've never had this apparently
this is the smokiest of the smoky correct this is the smokiest of the
Oh, that is a cool bottle. It looks almost like a Jameson bottle.
It does. It's kind of green.
Very green. Very green.
It looks like a light-colored scotch as well.
Hard to tell in the green bottle.
Hard to tell in the green bottle.
Because I would say it's a green-colored scotch.
Right.
And I just don't think that's going to hold up.
This probably tastes like 7-Up, I think.
It's like a Mountain Dew.
A pinch of Mountain Dew.
Laugh
frog.
So it looked online, and this was described
as the best breakfast scotch.
So keep that in mind.
Keep that in mind.
Yep.
That's how I eat my scotch, bacon, and eggs.
If the other one tastes like cornflakes,
this one probably just pairs well with it for breakfast.
Because it's a complete breakfast.
Indeed.
All right.
It smells alcoholy.
Do you smell alcohol?
I smell a little alcohol.
I definitely smell smoke.
Yeah, I smell smoke.
It's smoky.
It's a different smoky smell than P-Monster.
100% it is.
Like, P-Monster smells like campfire to me.
Overpowering.
P-Monster, yeah, it smells smokier, just really campfire.
I like the smell of it a lot better.
Do you?
I smell a lot of alcohol personally.
Yeah?
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm
not getting that.
Not much legs, really.
No.
Probably down there.
It's there, but it's...
What does that even mean, at least?
I have no clue.
It's for the leg scale.
You're right.
Yes.
That's what it is.
That's it.
I like my Scotch's leggy.
I like, like...
Touche.
Touche.
All right.
That's...
I find it really good.
It smells...
It tastes smokier than it smells for me.
for me i find that little little exactly
the opposite yeah yeah i smelled like more alcohol
nice i tasted good amount
of smoke yeah i like it actually yeah probably this is probably my
favorite one
so far to be honest I find
it has like Peak Monster
has some good flavors but it
went a little extreme with monsters
and uh like yeah like a monster like a monster would do your
friend just you overdid it the downfall
of all monsters just going too hard and too far and
too far and took it to the extreme
and that's why you get mobs mobs of villagers chasing you with pitchforks and
and torches and this guy just said whoa whoa
enough enough calm down you know and uh i found
a good balance i think i like it this is my favorite one
by far yeah i would have to agree
a frog it's french yeah i
like that one i figured
ronaldo said that's
great stuff he smells the
smell of medicine the smoke can remain
at ninety-five years we say bearded I'm not sure where that last one cut out
that we were talking about how much we loved it
and I looked up and it said you
filled up an SD card because you talked way too much
so you just filled up a 32
SD card I really like it very good we just added some water
to it this is my
favorite by far kind of see
a little bit of a salty
taste like now that you you
read about the like it's in your head
or the Isla one, see you mentioned those
flavors. I'm looking for those flavors
specifically. I can kind of see I think
a little salt. Where that comes from. I can't see seaweed.
I don't know what seaweed tastes like.
There's seaweed juice.
It's smooth. I like the smoke.
It's not overpowering. Definitely.
For a 5 out of 5. When I read about it. Yeah 5 out of 5.
I thought it was going to be a crazy smoke.
Compared to Peat Monster, it's just tame.
It is tame. Can I say floral again?
Is that just a broad spectrum?
I don't get anything else other than that. Floral? Floral?
Is it floral? Floral? Floral. I like it.
I'm definitely... Let's just check out what the people
who know what they're talking about say.
Yeah, yeah. I might give that one like a hard 7, 8.
Definitely, definitely, it's definitely a good breakfast scotch.
Uh-huh. Like the teachers say.
Yep, you can eat that with a flapjack. It makes sense now.
Pears, mangoes, lemons, seaweed, and it all topped off with iodine.
Oh, iodine! Oh, that's your salt!
No iodized salt, I think so. Okay, iodized salt maybe
Peat Monster. Was there salt in it though?
There's salt, salt's one of the characters really?
Oh, I mean it mentioned it on there
is one of the flavors that could have
No, that's pretty good. Yeah, I didn't get it.
No floral, a no floral. Sorry Jack, flowers, jackal
and two out of five with Jackal.
Oh, five of them.
Each bottle of La Frog comes with the gift of friendship.
Oh.
It's right here in the instructions.
We should have read the instructions before we started.
We were probably doing it all wrong.
This is the last one up.
This is La Froggin'.
You might have heard of Ron Swanson talking about it.
This is by far the best, before all of this,
the best scotch I had ever had.
I'll tell you now in two minutes what I like better,
that or the La Frog.
Oh, she's a darker one though.
Way darker than all of them put together.
Right.
Really?
That is really dark.
Especially if you put that ball beside the peat monster.
Oh, she's got a wooden nose alarm.
What do you think?
Soft or heavy on the top?
I think it's gonna be heavy.
Think it's gonna be a champagne kind of
Oh.
Me, mid-body.
That's a five.
Like most of our ratings.
It's five.
Player safe, she's a five.
So this one is definitely an Isla.
Isla?
I smell it from here.
The smoke?
Oh, this is like a peat monster type.
Oh yeah?
That level of smoke in there?
Yeah.
I don't know what people are talking about with this.
It's a four and the other is a five on the charts
because this is already, I can smell
it.
It's much, much smokier.
Yeah.
Okay.
I still know the peat monster level of smoking.
No, you're right.
Okay.
The peat monster was wild.
More so than the...
The fall?
Yep.
More so.
The fall?
This is what I think of when I think of Scotch.
This color.
Oh, no. Oh, no. No, no, that's pretty good.
That's a strong leg looking
into the light. She's got legs
She knows how to use them. She knows how to use them.
Yep. At least we can agree on that.
It's a five. Yeah, definitely.
I would put this definitely above.
This might go to the top.
It's heavy. It's a heavy smoke,
but this is a smooth, good smoke.
It's not overpowering smoke.
Right. I like this.
It's a heavy smoke without being campfire smoke.
It's got a leg, cigarette,
filter. She's going right
to the top of my list.
That beats Le Frog,
I think.
I like that one a whole lot. That's really nice.
That's really nice scotch. It's close this one and Le Frog.
I don't think we're gonna it's not supposed to be Le Frog.
So I'm gonna call you Le Frog.
That's what it's supposed to be.
Well it's Scottish so it's like Le Frog.
No that's Irish.
Le Frog.
It's like Swedish.
After the Swedish capital.
Le Frog.
Haglöfs Värna.
Somebody told me I butchered
the word Haglöfs Värna almost as bad as the word scotch.
as bad as they butchered the word Fjällräven.
It's supposed to be like,
Fjällräven.
And they're like,
something, boy.
And they call it fall raven.
It's literally spelled like F-J-E-L-L.
Fjällräven.
Fjällräven.
Yeah.
No offense to Swedish people,
you know
I mean, somebody's definitely
going to tell you
that we're doing this wrong.
Oh, 100%.
And the fact that I poured it on myself
every time
would make me agree.
We are wrong.
You know what?
That's my experience.
I do most things wrong.
Yeah.
Turns out all right, though.
That's how you do things first time.
how you learn yeah that's true
i've never done this before yeah
i might even drink one of these
this on ice yeah this one's smooth
this one's smooth like this one uh La Frog wow sorry look
the frog uh yeah those two are very smooth they're
a good level of smoke um it's really
close for me between those two i'm gonna go out on a limb
and say this one's a 8.5
And the La Frog is a 7.5.
Or maybe even an 8.
But I think I like them all, really,
except for the IPA and the Tomatin.
Those two really weren't what I was looking for.
Although, if I think I had to rate it,
it would be the Lagavulin as the number 1.
Then the La Frog as number 2.
The Heatmonster as number 3.
The IPA and then the Tomatin.
What do you think?
I think I'd do the same,
except I think I'd swap the Tomatin and the IPA.
I think I'd put the IPA at the bottom and the Tomatin above that,
but the IPA was just
kind of...
It was not as aggressive.
It was different.
It was experimental.
Was it?
Not in a good way.
It was an experiment.
Yeah, it was an experiment,
and not all experiments work out, i.e. Frankenstein.
Frankenstein
Yeah.
All right, guys.
Well, maybe we're going to wrap this up.
I know we've been talking for a long time.
I hope you enjoyed this.
enjoyed this this is obviously just
a one-shot video you know what I mean
I'm not gonna be doing a vodka review down the line
