I Went Camping with a Strange Old Man...

You can keep track of all the fish you've caught over time, but you never have to share your fishing hotspot unless you want to, which I'm not going to. there are some premium paid features that are super helpful and cool exclusive data-driven fishing forecast shows you the best time place and bait for every fish species as well as the depth contour so you can see the depths and the shallows of all bodies of water we've been having a lot of fun on this trip playing around with the app and its features and just catching fish left and right so big thanks to FishBrain for sponsoring this video check out the link in the description enjoy the trip hey guys how you doing Joe here thanks for clicking on the video I'm up north I'm just waiting by the side of the road for buddy Doug we're gonna go on a two-night canoe trip haven't been camping with Doug in some time you haven't seen me camping with Doug in some time at least so it should be a fun time just waiting on his old self right now there he is hey Doug good to see you buddy my name is Jeff we go camping now I'm ready all right meet you there everybody gets one that should be good yeah and that's what we'll do okay guys all right the third lift over second or third lift over here third lift over danger bacon doug i imagine normally you see me wear um like running shoes or hiking shoes for this kind of thing in the summer because they dry quicker but i knew i was gonna be walking in a lot of water so i figured i'd try these i got these yesterday on sale solomons they're on sale for like 116 dollars uh they're super lightweight hiking boots they're they're uh supposed to be waterproof i know that they're it'd be harder to dry them out and everything once i get them wet but my idea is if i'm just stepping in the water here and there where my shoes would definitely get soaked maybe these will keep me dry and not get soaked on the inside we shall see and i will report back maybe tomorrow up here remember when i was like there's a lot of liftovers are you going to land what are you doing there's like four real decent liftovers right here this the part last time where i decided it might be easier to go up on the land and try to get on the shore but it wasn't and i ended up just doing the lift over the thing is after these four they're pretty much done so just kind of kind of man up kind of man which is hard for me to do, it's going in, it's a little quick sandy over there, yeah he's gonna lose his paddle too, there's nowhere to go i'm gonna stick with what i know and go the waterway, waterway, why did it pronounce the tea and water like that i swear it's worth it this isn't it not far keep going if you're up there and you plan to do that i will keep going yeah like what i'll stay down here i'll let you know when the liftovers stop okay this muck and i'm overheated i need to sit in some shades for a minute sailing now wave when i can temporarily all good times gotta fill up in the clear water for drinking water and for hot water nice and clear that was a lot of work so doug got to the the end before me but he was in front of me too i don't know i don't know what was better i tried to do he did it the way he just pulled his canoe on the land but i'll find out from him how that was he's over there by an island filling up his water's lukewarm at best catch up with you when we find some shade sit down for a minute what do you think what the way that you took on the land all the way on the land yeah both pretty crappy so hard getting in here but now we're in here we're in this nice spot it's all clear and open this is the same spot that i stayed at and had my lunch at last time I was here so we're gonna find an awesome spot nice pretty big open camp so we can set up a tarp get out of the Sun catch some fishies the fire ban's lifted so we can far that was a real uh real real down point just this week i guess yeah a couple days ago something's in be careful you're gonna look at the size that rock that's what i mean there's not it's either leaving this this used to be i could paddle right up to the the beaver dam up here and now it's it's dropped some but still there's no sign of people doing the portage or anything some paint on that rock just now just just hanging out all right we've been paddling for a couple hours now both getting pretty hot it's about time to look for a camp spot there's all these nice big white pine here they create a good amount of shade so maybe somewhere in there is not so bad but we also do want to kind of find a rock a nice rocky outcrop where we can have a fire safely and be a little breezy keep away the bugs i'm telling you up in there is looking pretty pretty nice to me yeah yeah Yeah, that's nice and flat too. This spot looks like it might be okay. I'll pull up and check her out. I lost Doug. He's fishing somewhere. Okay, my boat's, well, not just, not just gonna leave it. Not a smart idea, Joe. We've learned, we've learned lessons in our old age. So we're gonna stay for a couple days. It'll be nice to find an open spot. We can't, this doesn't look too bad. It's flat-ish. We can have a fire up here or down near the water there's a rock nice flat rock up here anyway oh yeah somebody put their tent up here this is fine i think this will be good so they put their tent up here got good water access plenty of firewood because nobody's been here so yeah i like it i like it a lot all right check this out there's probably a lot more bear here than i thought the last time i was here and the bear ran across the uh the beaver dam we're a little bit before that but look at this i'm looking around at the ground trying to find a level spot and i see this this obviously part broke off but look it's just a perfect flip right over so that that rock was there for however long and the only thing big enough to move that is a bear flipped it over looking for bugs then you can see this pretty well-defined trail going down to the water maybe a lot more abundant with bears than i thought originally thought here not a concern it's totally fine especially with two guys You know with these cameras, you gotta turn them on before they start to work. You can't just think of it. You can't just will it. I read the secret. There's a willing thing. All right, up here, there's a little grassy part, there's a couple flat spots, so Doug's gonna pick under a tree over there. I'm gonna pick under a tree here. I need to clear out a little bit of these pine branches just so I can have room to put my tent up in the flat spot. So, no real need to keep these for firewood considering there's so much firewood around. Doug is, Doug's. Cam with Doug. this flat spot right here amongst the blueberries and the grasses all of the grasses plural man see love how easy my tent is to set up I love it I love it pretty happy with that that looks to be a pretty flat lay well what do you think about that little axe Doug it's a very thin handle too thin for your liking maybe yeah I have real man hands yeah got some paws on them probably good for yeah oh you know I got a little girl hands so but the I like it does and I like the length of it actually the Les Stroud one yeah was that the Bushman yep can't remember the name of this one velvicut yeah woodcraft would take some getting used to right tents all set up I want to set up my hammock too in the shade here so we can both take turns just kind of lounge and there's not much to do this trip this is like a relaxing like summertime swim fish eat good food have a couple beers trip like really just like relaxing thing so got the hammock gonna set it up but I need to trim away excuse me away some of these branches again you saw my little axe do it making quick work of those branches up there this is my adventure sworn scout this is the model that we're working on together convex blade nice big long chopper as you can see got a lot of a lot of on the pommel to get oomph oomph oomph oomph so we'll clear these off see how she does compared to the axe obviously way two way different tools but yeah as you can see that worked out just fine it's actually pretty easy to get in here and chop without the big axe but I always love an axe this is just something different the blade is totally fine too I guess that's what I should be showing you after all that chopping and again those are on the knots of pine so it's it's harder it's way more dense than normal than normal wood or normal pine right on the knots is obviously the dense spot so I'll be continuing to use this for the rest of the trip and for a while now but she's a beauty she's a beauty adventure sworn it's CPM 3V the type of steel it is there's my plane you can hear them oh thanks for checking in on me I'm doing all right this is awesome this is a great spot guys really it's very hot even the shade so I think we go swimming go swimming lay here for a bit hop in my skivvies haha forgot to I forgot to bring my swim shorts, so this is how it is. Anyways, been sitting around. The shade is kind of going away with the sun coming in as it does. Are you gonna swim with those socks in your underwear? Ah! Take it away from Doug, more than anything. All right, I haven't measured this at all, but this isn't a high jump and I'm sure it'll be all right. So I'm gonna do it. My life I hustle just to get that moolah. I was telling you guys I wish I would have brought the wacky worm set up Well Doug was nice enough to bring enough for both of us So I've got all the whole set, the little applicator and the rubber rings, the worms, the whole nine yards So we'll get one set up here real quick Hook already on there with barbs, a little bit different than the last last fishing I was doing right Barbless over there in the Northwest Territories. Oh, man. It's hot guys. She's hot So you get yourself one of these, one of them here, little rubber rings there, I don't know why I said that. Get yourself a rubber ring, this applicator has some on it already, so I think you the best of my recollection, you stick the worm in halfway, that's a bit more than halfway, but run this ring up, now it's in the middle, and you can actually hook your hook to the ring instead of the worm so you don't lose all your worms in the fishies' mouths or other places. There you go. Let's hope this works. I'm really not proficient with this method. I've only ever used it once, and that was with Doug last fall. I'm more of a spinner, spoon-type fisherman, as you probably know. Can I call myself a fisherman yet? I think so, I think so, I hope so. Well, this wind is blowing me this way. I might as well just continue to go with the current, go with the flow. Joe, I love this place. Surprise, I'm back already. I didn't think I was gonna come back yet. If I'm still around in the fall, I will be back in the fall too, But I just got some news, and we did get the mortgage, which is awesome. So everything looks like we are getting the house. It just has to all happen still. You know, she's pregnant. We can't move until after she has the baby because she's high-risk pregnancy. Potential complications. Everything will be fine. So it will be all up to the homeowner now to whether or not he can hold on to the house. So I'll give him, the plan is to give him a down payment, but I'm sure it'll be all fine. I'm 99% sure we'll get it. Very happy. Very, very happy about that. It's pretty shallow in here. I think I'm going to head down that way. Man, I moved into the shade here. It's much more bearable. I'm not ashamed or afraid, apparently, to say that I'm not having any luck at all. I know Doug caught one. I'm almost positive he caught one. I can see him holding it up, just gloating. No, I'm joking. but yeah no luck so i'm just gonna hang out in the shade here cast near some of these fallen trees because i can't be out in that sun too much longer i'm a sensitive boy sensitive skin joe i have uh dehydrated chili for supper if i don't catch any fish and i'm sure doug will share his fishy with me he's good enough but i'm okay i can eat fish tomorrow night well i guarantee i'll catch fish tonight after supper tonight after supper is when i had planned on catching a fish in the first first place so okay i'll let you know if i catch one but don't hold your breath i'm back from fishing i didn't catch anything i can't see doug anywhere so he's obviously still out hopefully getting us some supper while he's doing that i'm gonna make myself useful let's set up a tarp it is super bright uh sun is all on our side now so she's that high in the sky It's 5:40 then it'll stay light. I don't know quite some time So we need some shade rig up a tarp here, and then maybe go cut some firewood I've already strung up a ridgeline with some tied on toggles. I think I'll just do like a lean to type There's not really much to tie off to around there. I'll have these really long pieces of paracord Pretty easy actually to set this up. It's just a matter of pegging this down at the back Did I was I right in saying that I saw you pull the bass out not too far right up there Yeah, nothing enough to eat Were you getting bites? Because you come along and you get in the lily pads the lily pads are moving So the fish are in deep, but you can't even I don't have flipping jigs or anything to even plunk them in the pad. So they're all hunkered right in there Well, I got bites no fish. I got a few bites with nothing. I switched up lures and everything Well, I got some bites, but I'm sure they're just a little crappier. Yeah, they're a little sucker, like sucking on the worm. They felt very small, yes. All right, well, I don't feel so bad, except for we don't have dinner. Sure. Without what? I'm not getting on my boat. Without fish? No. Well, anyway, it's going to be, like, last time I was here was a later type thing. Like, when it started getting a little dusky was when the fish really got hot. It's 10 to 6. Doug's out there catching fish, so I'm going to get out too. I'm going to stay in the shade as much as I can. Let's deal with this heat, but I need to go catch up and catch some fishies too. Why did Doug get us some dinner? Totally fine with that. Yeah, I got potatoes and onions. I'm just a little guy you're not gonna eat two pounds of meat are you no we're gonna let one go but nice it's turning around starting to get on that stupid worms oh joel gets a uh a little bassy guy a little too small to eat we don't need him anyway but there he is oh jumping jumping jehoshaphat he's a little fighter that guy he knocked the worm right out i got a decent fish way better than my last one oh nice all right i feel much better about this much better about this than the last guy oh yeah same size just a touch bigger oh it's in there it's in there that's not a bad one not a bad little bass well that was a better better bass than the first one still on the small side but i feel better about it flipping out the water and everything he spit her hard but something happened something happened that was fun not even like it was any good size or anything just a hit just a hit oh got another one a little bite it's fun it's fun fishing like this yeah but i didn't i did see no no no what do you want to do doug what do you mean oh yeah i assume we have a campfire why what are you what else are you gonna do a little pick stuff thing it doesn't uh what about that rock is that any better okay well i'll stop doing this i'll come up and no well we should it's past seven we should figure something out to do anyway for dinner extra safe for the camera. Piss! He took my worm. He took my worm. Son of a gun. It's getting hot. It's getting hot. I will build the fire pit. You will do the deeds with the fishies. Alright. What? We'll see. That's a big one, yeah it's a good fire pit. Good decent cooking pit. It's not like we need a bonfire for any reason. It's nice and hot. We'll just be cooking and keeping away the mosquitoes, so It's perfect for that. Fire pit's completed. There is a little bit of firewood kicking around there but i want to go get some hardwood, that's all just pine so we'll go up into the woods a bit away from the uh the water where the maple and the oak grow like Doug's tent over there, winds up over there but i saw this oak earlier right here that we can get be some dense wood, other pieces here that definitely burn well start our fire today i'm going to be using some wax wood stick from production here at 51, he creates the uh fat rope and all that Good fire starting stuff. I always use so this is actually like I think I might have used it before in a vidya This is actually a piece of impregnated wood, resin impregnated wood so you can really catch it, focus Really shave up some nice pieces, or you can baton it down into squares or smaller pieces So you can use it as tinder and everything doesn't smell like you think it would We're going to have our campfire on the rack because of the dryness of the bush and not taking any chances yep the fire ban was just lifted, we don't be silly out here and we can wash off the remnant back into the water only I don't have my first two on me, no it seemed like I thought I lost my first actually what is that thing called a lanyard yeah I got one Doug Dory JK anyways you can see how good that works just a little couple shavings throw my natural fuel on now I'm a natural kindling rather look a a piece of poop. Here you go, Doug. Momma! Flippin' out the water and everything. Oh, big boy, come and see that egg. I am the fish's father. You do not know this. He's not aware. It's not warm like at home, though. though it was true it's always wormy at home yeah no worms in this one i got a um hot wicked awesome IPA this is from Nickel Brook this is a really good beer mike uh mike and i always message back and forth really good beers we find or whatever and i normally can't find them the ones he shows me because i live in Windsor he's in closer to Toronto where they have lots of good craft beers and stuff anyways they had this one in this is a mystery pack winner from Nickel Brook winner of our First ever mystery pack vote this New England IPA is the people's champ for a reason hazy dank and juicy with a big Tropical bite.
