The Rock Garden at RHS Garden Wisley is one of the estate's oldest, largest, and most dramatic features.

It was constructed between 1910 and 1912 as one of the garden's major projects after the site was given to the Royal Horticultural Society.

It is built into a steep north-facing hillside using massive Sussex original sandstone blocks positioned in their original quarry orientation to mimic a natural outcrop.

It includes a network of small paths, rocky pools, streams, and cascades leading down to the long ponds. The uppermost section features a dramatic waterfall and Japanese-style landscape designed by Professor Masao Fukuhara.

The rock Garden showcases a vast collection of alpine plants, small weeping trees, conifers, and seasonal bulbs, alongside nearby areas like the Sand Garden and Alpine Meadow.

The steep north-facing slope stays cool and damp, providing ideal conditions for shade-loving alpines that require sharp drainage, while sun-exposed sections support different plant varieties.
