Henri Huet (1927–1971) was a French war photographer best known for his extensive coverage of the Vietnam War. Born in Da Lat, French Indochina, to a Breton engineer and a Vietnamese mother, Huet trained as a painter before studying photography at the École des Arts et Métiers in Paris. He returned to Southeast Asia as a combat photographer for the French Navy during the First Indochina War, which introduced him to military conflict as a subject. After leaving the service, he worked for the Associated Press (AP), eventually becoming one of its leading photographers in Vietnam.

Huet’s photography during the Vietnam War focused on the daily realities of soldiers, both American and South Vietnamese, as well as the impact of the conflict on civilians. He became recognised for his ability to document front-line combat situations with precision and detail, producing some of the most widely circulated images of the war. His work provided Western audiences with a clear visual record of the scale and conditions of the conflict, frequently appearing in major international publications throughout the 1960s. His photographs were regarded by editors for their clarity, immediacy, and informational value.

In February 1971, while covering Operation Lam Son 719 in Laos, Huet was killed when the South Vietnamese Army helicopter he was travelling in was shot down. The crash also claimed the lives of three other photographers: Larry Burrows (Life magazine), Kent Potter (United Press International), and Keisaburo Shimamoto (Newsweek). The loss marked a significant moment in the history of war reporting, underlining the risks faced by photographers in conflict zones. Huet’s archive remains an important primary source for the study of the Vietnam War and the role of photojournalism in documenting modern warfare.
