Cristina García Rodero (Puertollano, Ciudad Real, 1949) trained in Fine Arts at the Complutense University of Madrid and began, with support from the Juan March Foundation in the early 1970s, a long-term survey of Spain’s popular festivities and rites. The 15-year project culminated in the book España oculta (1989), which was named Book of the Year at the Rencontres d’Arles and coincided with her W. Eugene Smith Grant in Humanistic Photography.

She combined fieldwork with teaching—lecturing in photography at the Complutense University of Madrid from 1983 to 2007—and agency affiliations that included more than a decade with Agence VU. She entered Magnum Photos as a nominee in 2005 and became a full member in 2009, widely noted as the first Spanish photographer admitted to the cooperative. She received Spain’s National Photography Prize in 1996.

Beyond Spain, García Rodero has produced extended studies of ritual and belief, including a four-year project on vodou practices in Haiti, alongside work in Eastern Europe, India and elsewhere. Recent distinctions include election to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (2013), the Ortega y Gasset Career Award (2024), and the creation of the hereditary marquessate of Valle de Alcudia in her name by Royal Decree in June 2025.
