Trump Threatened to CUT OFF Ukraine... Zelensky Said "We're DONE" and Set Putin's Refinery on FIRE

Oct 16, 2026

On 15 October 2026 Volodymyr Zelensky told the Financial Times that Ukraine's pause on strikes against Russian oil refineries is over: "The block is out. We're done." Hours later, drones set fire to Rosneft's Ryazan refinery, which supplies Moscow and makes up about 5% of Russia's refining capacity. In this briefing we walk through the week that led there: the US decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel, Trump's call for Ukraine to "get a new leader", the "energy ceasefire" Ukraine says it learned about from the media, and Russia's attack on the night of 13-14 October with 39 missiles and 128 drones that hit all three of Kyiv's heat and power plants and left more than 600,000 people without power. We explain Zelensky's claim that US officers warned "if you will not stop, we will block intelligence", why missile warnings matter, the Starshield speed cap that hit Ukraine's interceptor drones, and Elon Musk's response. Then: why refineries are Ukraine's strongest pressure point, 12 refineries hit in September, what happened when US intelligence was paused in March 2025, and Zelensky's price for another pause, more Patriot interceptors. The caveats: the intelligence threat is Zelensky's account and Trump denies a halt, the Starlink figures come from Ukrainian sources, and the damage at Ryazan is not yet known. Facts as reported up to 15 October 2026.
