Donald Trump 'openly financing Russia's war with Ukraine', Nobel peace laureate says

Alexandra Matviychuk, thank you very much indeed for being with us here on France 24. We really appreciate your time. I'm really interested to find out how you see the current situation, how you're reading what is going on. Donald Trump, it seems, once again taking the side of Russia, leaving Ukraine, as Volodymyr Zelensky has said, feeling very betrayed. It's a weird situation because Trump promised to end this war in 24 hours. And this is already the longest 24 hours in the human history. And now Trump openly find end this war because with lifting sanctions, he provides Russia opportunity to earn more money. And 40% of Russian budget is going on to the war against Ukraine. And how it works, extra money will convert it in rockets and drones, and it will convert it in additional deaths about civilian population. This is formula. I'm wondering also how you feel about the behavior of Elon Musk. Elon Musk, a rich private businessman, richest man on the planet, some say. What right does he have to call for Vladimir Zelensky to resign? What right does he have to meddle in Ukraine's affairs? And of course, what's been happening with Starlink, or should I give it its military term, Star Shield, clearly is not helping Ukraine defend itself in the face of Russia sending more and more missiles to hit your country. So what happened with Starlink is a good question, because suddenly militaries and people who connected with military told that the speed of Starlink becomes slower and this will have impact not just on the battlefield it will have impact to defense of civil population because Starlink connection is used in interceptors for Russian jet drones and without even being having ability to intercept that Russian jet drones will be like a shooting gallery where Russian jet drones can hit every residential building, every museum, every hospital, every school that they just want to hit. Alexandra, when Donald Trump talks about doing a diesel deal with Russia, basically busting his own sanctions against Vladimir Putin and basically giving him more money to buy more bombs to throw at your country, clearly it is a terrible sign to you and to everybody who supports you about where the united states stands today and i'm wondering in that context how important is it for you that europe where vladimir zelensky is now meeting with european leaders how important is it that europe continues in its steadfastness its support for ukraine we need decisive action from europe we don't know how many time we have we are dying the time for us converted to numerous deaths and we urgently need to do various visible actions like arrest Russian shadow fleet to confiscate Russian frozen assets to create a special tribunal on aggression to close back door that Russia is used to bypass sanctions because we still find in Russian rockets and drones elements of Western companies and so on and so forth and it's not a question that government in France or government in Germany don't know what has to be done it's just a question of bravery and historical responsibility to do the right things in the right time people talk about Ukrainians being brave and courageous but in fact you have no choice do you you have to be brave and courageous because of what has been put upon you what's been inflicted upon you and this is all part of the tragedy of what you're going through because this war has genocidal character and Putin openly says there is no Ukrainian nation there is no Ukrainian language there is no Ukrainian culture for 12 years I'm documenting how this war is converted in numerous deaths in occupied territories where Russians physically exterminate active local people in communities mayors journalists children writers teachers environmentalists how they ban Ukrainian language and culture how they destroyed and robbed Ukrainian cultural heritage and how they take Ukrainian children to Russia separate them with their families told them you're not Ukrainian you are Russian children your families your parents refused from you and you will be adopted by Russian families who will bring you up as Russian so you're totally right we have no other choice if we stop resisting and we will tell we are tired and exhausted and russia will occupy the whole country we will cease to exist we will vanish alexander you mentioned the forced um deportation of children uh that is something of course for which vladimir putin is the subject of an international arrest warrant that is a war crime which has been perpetrated obviously it needs to be judged in front of a tribunal but the warrant is out for vladimir putin um i'm wondering about your organization center for civil liberties labeled as undesirable by moscow if russia were to take over your country clearly that would mean your organization completely squashed i imagine you'd be arrested but it's not just us who will be arrested i'm documented the practice of brutal abduction legal detention torture and sexual violence in occupied territories and all people are under the threats because you live in gray zone you have no tool how to defend your rights your freedom your property your life your children your beloved ones and russian detention is horrible people told me how they were beaten tortured raped locked into wooden boxes their fingers were cut their nails were turned away their nails were drilled they were electrically shocked through their genitalia one woman told me how her eye was ripped out with a spoon alexander these are horrific stories horrific things that you have heard and um we wish you uh all the very best in terms of your continued work of the evidence that you are gathering over what has been taking Alexandra Matviychuk from the Ukrainian Center for civil liberties Nobel Peace laureate of 2022 2022 of course is when Russia launched the full-scale invasion of Alexandra's country thank you for joining us we appreciate your time uh stay safe jack you in your own language, Ukrainian, which does exist.
