And Fox 5's Tara Jabbour joining us now about whenever it involves
a senior citizen,
it's always a heartbreaking story,
especially with this woman who lives in a senior facility.
She had her safe apparently stolen, Tara, with over $10,000 inside.
Tell us more about what happened here.
Yeah, Tom, that's right.
I spoke to a woman who lives in southwest Atlanta.
She says she's lived there for three years, never had any issues.
And then the last week, last Thursday, actually,
she was getting ready to go to a doctor's appointment.
And she says before she leaves her closet,
she always puts a lock on it because she knows that she has
a safe there with money inside of it, $13,000 to be exact.
So she said she went to her doctor's appointment
for a couple of hours, got home.
And when she got home, she noticed that that lock
that you're seeing there on the screen, it was on the ground.
So someone had broken the lock
and taken her safe from inside of her apartment.
So, again, $13,000 inside of her closet there.
Obviously, she's been devastated,
but she had a little bit of hope at first
because there was a camera in her hallway,
and she was hoping that that camera,
obviously, you see a camera, you would think it would be working,
but it was not working when this happened.
So they still haven't been able to catch whoever stole this money.
Let's take a listen on what she had to say.
I have a lock on my closet. Any time I leave, especially
when I've been on an emergency report, I make sure my lock is locked.
I feel violated.
I feel like someone has stolen my sense of security,
I don't like being here by myself,
and I don't like leaving my apartment when there's no one in here.
so obviously you just feel
so sorry for her because she's going through a lot right now
not only did she lose thirteen thousand dollars she
also feels violated doesn't feel safe to be
inside of her apartment anymore
so she did file of course a police report with the Atlanta police
department so they're still investigating
this um and i did reach out to her apartment complex
but i haven't yet gotten a response uh it's it's just
so heartbreaking my dad is in a senior living
community so i know tara that people are in and out of these apartments
and and when i say people
i mean you know staff there on the property
and my mind is just kind of like who would know that
she has a safe in her closet
and i'm not saying that that certainly anybody on the staff might
have known but you just kind of wonder like
who's aware of what the contents of this person's
apartment um and and then as you said
the security apparatus around the property why wasn't the
camera working and so do so they have no leads whatsoever about
who might have been the perpetrator
here right and you know that's something i thought as well
because it's like who would know in this
specific spot in this woman's closet she's only gone
for a couple of hours that someone would come
into there and find her safe and take it
and know that it had all that cash in it so you wonder if
whoever did this knew her or had
been in her apartment before maybe just because it is so odd
that they would know where to go inside of her apartment
and when you're talking about an older
person sometimes this is all they have you know
this is their their savings and we know the way
things were done in the olden days is to stuff
the cash under your mattress for safekeeping this
woman smartly had it in a safe uh
but obviously that wasn't good enough for her uh because she
had it stolen from her but is there any way like has has
her family stepped in is there a way we
can help this woman kind of get back up on her feet yeah
so her family is going to be having a
GoFundMe so they will we will be posting
that on our website later today um she luckily she does
have a couple daughters so i'm sure that they'll
be able to support her but she says that money is
yes her life savings like you talked about
and she was actually looking to move into a two-bedroom
apartment and that's why she was kind of saving up all
this money now that's obviously delayed
and you know she was like I keep praying about
this and I'm just hoping that someone will come
forward or just something
but she knows that it's very unlikely yeah because moving into an
assisted living facility is a big adjustment for seniors
and you heard the consternation in that
woman's voice. She's like, I don't even want to be here.
And so that in and of itself is a huge
adjustment. But then to have peace of mind over
your own security is huge, too. So we hope that
they find whoever did this and that she is able
to get back up on her feet. Tara, thanks so much.
