Jane Hilton is a British photographer and filmmaker based in London. She began her working life as a classical musician and moved into photography and film, producing multiple monographs that document contemporary American culture; published books include Dead Eagle Trail (Schilt, 2010), Precious (Schilt, 2013), LA Gun Club (2016) and Cowboys & Queens (2025). Her practice is organised around long-term series and gallery projects; she was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society in 2014 and has shown work in solo and group exhibitions across Europe and the United States.

Hilton’s working method emphasises extended fieldwork, observational film and slow, large-format portraiture. She has repeatedly returned to the American West to produce interior and portrait studies of contemporary cowboys (the Dead Eagle Trail series) and has spent many years documenting legal brothels in Nevada, work that generated a BBC ten-part film commission and the photographic book Precious. Several reviews and profiles note her use of plate/large-format cameras and a deliberate, portrait-and-interior approach that records both people and the material context in which they live and work.

Her film projects run alongside her still photography and often extend the same documentary enquiries: in 2000 she produced the BBC series Love for Sale on Nevada brothels, and more recently she has directed feature-length work such as The Last Lion Tamer. Hilton commonly pairs photographic monographs with short and long documentary films, and her output is presented through books, gallery exhibitions and festival screenings that document socially contested but legally enacted practices.
