All right, thank you, Sam.
Well, today, students in Seattle
and across the state will participate in the Great Washington Shakeout.
So this is an annual drill that is geared
at getting the community prepared for earthquakes.
All right, so this morning, FOX 13's John Halberstadt is out there
at the Children's Center at Burke Gilman Gardens in Seattle.
So students prepping there for a day full of earthquake education.
So, John, how's it going out there?
It's going pretty good, Bill.
You know, it's never too early for kids
to start learning about how to get ready for an earthquake, right?
We're at a preschool here right in the Sand Point area of Seattle.
And what's really cool is when you first walk in here,
parents and kids, this is the table out here for them today.
Take some free emergency supplies.
So we've got whistles, we've got flashlights,
emergency blanket, and then all the paperwork
that you might want to take along with you as well.
Like a family communication plan, build a kit,
how to build a kit, grab and go bags.
All the information that parents need is right here.
And then, of course, the kids taking part
in the Great ShakeOut as well.
Let's go take a look at it right now.
They're in here getting ready.
Of course, we're going to do that at 10:15 here on 10:15.
Hi, guys.
Are you guys ready to do this big shakeout?
Yeah.
Do you remember what you do when it's time?
Yeah.
What do you do?
We go under the table.
And what else do you do?
That's right.
You're all ready to do it?
Yeah.
Okay, I'm confident you guys are going to be great. Thanks.
And we're joined by Jennifer
and Tanae here as well from the Children's Center.
And I have every confidence that these kids
are going to do great at 10:15.
But why is it so important for you to hold these things here today?
Well, it's important for us,
for our staff and our kids to know how to be prepared in an emergency.
The most important thing is that our families know when they're
not here with their kids that they are safe here at school.
So they are comfortable knowing they can leave their kids here
and be safe and they can worry about
their own safety before worrying about trying to get down here
in the event of an emergency and an earthquake.
It's also a great way for us to practice our skills to realize,
you know, what we need to work on.
If we need to be more prepared in different ways,
we need different supplies.
And it's a great way for our kids to learn about what
to do in emergencies and how to help themselves and each other.
Today, you teach these kids about this.
You're in charge of preparedness.
How do you get them ready for something like
this and keep it in their mind year-round?
Well, we do monthly drills along with fire drills
and everything like that,
so they know what to do in an emergency.
They hide under the tables, they cover their heads,
and they know that that's what's going to keep them safe.
And, Jennifer, you're telling me it's not just here in the classroom
with the kids getting ready and some of the supplies you have.
You've got water stored out back.
Tell me about how you guys are ready for an earthquake.
Our goal is to be two weeks ready.
So it's important that we update our emergency supplies.
A great way for people to remember it is daylight savings.
That's a great time to stock up supplies, check to see.
We keep 55-gallon barrels of emergency water that's been sanitized
and treated that we can use in the event that our water gets shut down.
we have gas heat that in case you know
our power goes out we'll be able to cook things heat things
stay warm and safe in our building
and then we've got two weeks of food on hand so if we were stuck
here for any period of time we would be able to take care of our kids
and hopefully help out our
friends and neighbors in the community as well
so you're ready the building's ready and the kids
are ready as well and we're going
to check it all out live coming up at 10 15 the great shakeout
For now, guys, we'll send it back to you.
Okay, John, I hope you follow direction as well,
because it seems like those little kiddos know what they're doing.
They do.
And they will be showing us the way here coming up at 10.15.
All right, let's check in.
