Colin Jones (1936–2021) was a British photographer whose work focused on class, culture, and social change in post-war Britain. Trained as a ballet dancer with the Royal Ballet before turning to photography, he developed a disciplined and observant approach that shaped his visual style. In the early 1960s, he became a staff photographer for The Observer, where he quickly built a reputation for clear and incisive documentary work.

His most recognised project, The Black House (1973–76), documented the lives of young Black men in a north London hostel at a time of racial and social tension. Jones also photographed working-class communities, including coal miners and shipbuilders, producing images that serve as records of industrial and social conditions in Britain. His style combined direct observation with structural awareness, reflecting his background in the arts.

Jones’s work is frequently discussed in studies of British documentary photography, especially in relation to representation and social history. His photographs are held in major collections such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. They remain valuable resources for examining photography’s role in shaping perceptions of race, youth, and class in the mid-20th century.
