I should be out camping, but in the midst of this whole swine flu
nonsense, I feel like I need to be a little bit more prepared.
It's time to split some wood, stack some wood.
As you can see, my stacking job didn't hold up to snuff a few days ago.
That fell over.
I'm almost done my pile back there.
I do not want to have to rely on the propane guys to come here.
I prefer, actually, if they didn't.
So, with that said,
Today is the day talking about my favorite axe for splitting wood.
I use it around the house for two years now.
We went through almost ten cords of wood this year.
we burned we only fill up our propane tank once
and we're almost out of it
again so therein lies the urgency yeah let's get to it
Like I
said before
this whole
avian bird flu
epidemic I had
planned on
camping this weekend
but it's okay it's a good time to stay home get things
ready there's gonna be people out
this weekend anyway I'd rather go during the
week where there's not gonna be many people oh
that said this is March break
So we'll see anyways when I moved up here last
October so not this past October two octobers ago.
We didn't know much about heating with wood
I had we'd only only done it once prior maybe 11 years ago,
and that was just for one season
So I had just been using my grandmother's axe. I've been using
my grandmother's axe to split wood. It wasn't a splitting
Axe and I dinged up the handle pretty good,
and it wasn't doing a very good job
So I went over to the hardware store,
and I got a Husqvarna splitting maul
so it's not the longest thing as you can see it's
about up to my thigh but the
head is pretty cool it's a super wedge
shaped axe head I've never seen an axe
head this wedge shaped before
so it concentrates all the focus just in this
part where it hits the wood it's all
force coming down in that spot and it
works really well I have dinged up
the handle as well a little bit on here a
little paracord wrap wouldn't be too bad
but replacing the handle is not such a
hard thing and I kind of enjoy it as well
so let's get to splitting some
wood I'll show you how she works yeah you can do the old Morse Kahansky
trick or the Ray Mears golfing splitting woods we got
to go split up all that
wood that's left in the piles there
and then replace this wood because this wood
is not very dry it hadn't seasoned as well as that wood
so use up all that
wood and then replace that pile
with this because this is a crappy spot to
pile of wood anyways I never had anything above it
and and I don't want
put this crappy
wood on top
of the good
wood basically
the whole winter
just keep putting
it off putting it off winter
is almost over a perfect time
to do this i will be getting back to
actual adventure type videos
and more real bushcraft type videos and stuff too that will
be coming very soon with the warming weather i'm kind
of sick of this winter i'm looking at
pictures of where i used
to live it's all there's no snow grass
is always greener hey there we're
gonna start off
with this gnarled twisty pretty pretty decent sized piece
compared to the other ones actually start off
with that see how she goes the
axe works with that then there's much
more straight smaller pieces too but
might as well start off with the real test gotta stay back big guy
secure that split on the second hit
there I flipped it around yeah you can
see just right there it's gone all
the way through one more whack will do this
thing just fine I'm sure
and that's a big old piece that was heavy when I lifted it up
you gonna be okay buddy
my chopping block has
seen better days don't
do this at home
got a nice small
kindling piece off
there I got two
definite burnable
sizes I can split
this down
again if I wanted to there's no reason
so I'll keep at it again that was the big piece split
this guy pick
a different spot
to lay out oh okay
you see this one laying
on the ground here
this guy we can do one of the golf swings
on that one i'm sure you have to read the wood right i
wouldn't be doing this with that piece that i just split
the gnarled stick piece i'm doing this with
a straight grain smaller piece tripper
you gotta go out out efforts at all
and then you can do one
of these just stand
lay in front of it
they're too tight go
on buddy oh the side
is better for me
anyways it works just fine sometimes
when i don't want to pick pieces of wood to put them on the
chopping block I'll just do that come out
of the pile like this they split
They
split
if not
they're
to pick
them up
Sometimes
it's
easier
than
that so
the people are gonna love hearing
that rubber squeaking you could pick a
different
spot and
right
next
to the
camera to
chew that
oh oh man
take the
super
dry
straight
grain
ones
and
make some
kindling
out
of it
All
these
other
sizes are decent enough to burn I like
to have a mix some small some big
So how's everybody doing?
Staying safe at home from Giardia?
