Ragnar Axelsson - Photographs.

Ragnar Guðni Axelsson (born 6 March 1958), known professionally as RAX, is an Icelandic photojournalist who worked as a staff photographer for the Icelandic newspaper Morgunblaðið from the mid-1970s until 2020. His career began in adolescence and has spanned assignments across Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Scandinavia and Siberia.
Axelsson’s published projects include Andlit Norðursins (Faces of the North) and Last Days of the Arctic; he produces predominantly black-and-white documentary photography that records people, animals and landscapes in high-latitude regions. His work has been presented in books and international exhibitions and has been featured in outlets such as Life, National Geographic and major newspapers.
Across decades of fieldwork Axelsson documents changes in Arctic environments and livelihoods, with repeated photographic returns to the same communities used to indicate shifts in sea ice, hunting practices and settlement patterns. His recent retrospective exhibitions and book releases assemble long-term sequences intended to serve as empirical photographic records of cultural and environmental transformation.
