Weegee - Photographs.

Arthur Fellig (June 12, 1899 – December 26, 1968), professionally known as Weegee, was an Austrian-born American photographer active primarily in New York City during the 1930s and 1940s. His work is characterised by its direct documentation of urban life, often captured at night with the use of a portable flash. Fellig’s ability to arrive at crime scenes and emergencies with remarkable speed earned him his nickname, derived from the phonetic spelling of “Ouija,” referencing his seemingly supernatural timing. His practice was closely linked to the operations of the press, particularly through his association with the Manhattan Police Headquarters, where he maintained a permit to monitor police radio transmissions.
Weegee’s photographic approach combined technical precision with an unembellished representation of social realities. Using a 4x5 Speed Graphic camera, he employed flash photography to create stark contrasts that emphasised the physical and psychological dimensions of urban existence. His images frequently depicted crime victims, arrests, crowds, and nightlife, presenting the city as a site of both order and chaos. The immediacy of his work aligned with contemporary photojournalism while also anticipating documentary and street photography practices that would later become central to visual culture in post-war America.
The photographer’s images circulated widely through newspapers, wire services, and later through books such as Naked City (1945), which consolidated his reputation. This publication, combining photographs with concise captions, exemplified his interest in factual representation rather than interpretation or artistic expression. Weegee’s work has since been studied in relation to themes of surveillance, media sensationalism, and urban sociology, reflecting the intersection between photographic documentation and public spectacle. His archive remains an important resource for understanding mid-twentieth-century visual reporting and the development of modern photographic realism.
