Evgenia Arbugaeva - Photographs.

Evgenia Arbugaeva was born in 1985 in Tiksi, a port town on the Laptev Sea in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), and spent part of her childhood in Yakutsk. She studied management in Moscow before relocating to New York City to study photography at the International Centre of Photography, graduating in 2009.
Her photographic practice concentrates on communities and environments of the Russian Arctic and adjacent northern regions. Key long-term projects include work shot in Tiksi and the multi-part series presented as Hyperborea (which includes Weather Man, Kanin Nos, Dikson, and Chukotka), as well as reportage on mammoth hunters in Yakutia and a separate, staged sequence titled Amani. Her work has appeared in major outlets and forum publications, including National Geographic and The New Yorker.
Recognition for her work includes the Magnum Foundation Emergency Fund grant (2012), the Leica Oskar Barnack Award (2013), the ICP Infinity Award — Young Photographer (2015), and selection as a National Geographic Media Innovation Fellow (2018). She has also worked on short documentary film projects; the short documentary Haulout (co-directed with Maxim Arbugaev) received festival awards and professional nominations.
