Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is asking Saudi Arabia to allow Israel to join the fight against the Houthis in Yemen. The kingdom's crown prince is against it. Haaretz reports this, citing a diplomatic source. According to the publication's source, Netanyahu is approaching Saudi Arabia through US mediation. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman does not want Israeli military involvement, expecting a negative reaction among the kingdom's population.

Another source familiar with the situation told the newspaper that Netanyahu's efforts have a second goal. The Israeli prime minister wants to strengthen ties with Riyadh and pave the way for a future agreement to normalize relations between the two countries. In recent months, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly promoted normalization between Saudi Arabia and Israel through the Abraham Accords. The late US Senator Lindsey Graham, a close ally of Trump and Netanyahu, spent the final weeks of his life working to ensure that such an agreement became the foundation of a new political order in the Middle East after the war with Iran. According to several media reports, the prospect of a deal with Saudi Arabia in the fall of 2023 seemed imminent. This was one of the reasons Netanyahu avoided escalating the conflict with the Hamas movement in the final weeks before the October 7 attack of that year. Riyadh's official position, however, is different: normalization with Israel is possible only after significant progress toward the creation of a Palestinian state.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has stepped up his personal security measures amid increasing attacks by Houthi rebels that, according to media reports, threaten key targets in Riyadh.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the heir to the throne moves between fortified palaces equipped with bunkers, accompanied by a specially selected group of guards.

The escalating situation poses serious risks to the security of the royal family and the stability of Saudi Arabia. Iran-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels are intensifying attacks on Saudi territory, demonstrating their ability to strike targets at significant distances from areas under their control.

One of the most serious incidents was the attack on Riyadh International Airport. According to the publication, at least 12 people were killed and hundreds were injured in the strike. Two terminals were damaged, and the following day, reports emerged of further attacks and a fire in one of the terminals.

The threat extends to other sites in the capital as well. After a ballistic missile was intercepted, its debris fell on the grounds of a complex housing a kindergarten and a clinic. Financial district employees, students, and diplomats were forced to seek shelter or evacuate.

The state of Saudi Arabia's air defenses is a further concern. According to the Wall Street Journal, interceptor missile stockpiles are dwindling, forcing the military to redeploy air defense systems to protect royal palaces and critical energy facilities.

However, retaliatory actions could lead to a protracted conflict for Riyadh. Saudi Arabia has been at war with the Houthis since 2015, and renewed attacks and the struggle for positions on the Red Sea coast are increasing the threat to shipping and oil routes.

Gulf expert Christian Coates Ulrichsen of Rice University's Baker Institute warned in a commentary to the Wall Street Journal that a military response could lead to the kingdom's deeper involvement in asymmetric warfare. He assessed that the Houthis have already proven their ability to inflict significant material and symbolic damage on their adversaries. Amid the threat, Saudi Arabia is seeking support from other countries.
