Doris Adelaide Derby (born November 11, 1939 in The Bronx, New York City; died March 28, 2022) was an American documentary photographer, educator and civil-rights activist. She held a master’s degree and PhD in anthropology from the University of Illinois, and served as adjunct associate professor of anthropology and founding director of the Office of African-American Student Services and Programs at Georgia State University in Atlanta.

Derby became a field-organiser for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) in Mississippi in 1962, working in adult-literacy programmes, voter registration drives and community theatre. In that role from 1962 to 1972 she also began photographing everyday life and grassroots civic initiatives in Black communities in Mississippi, documenting domestic life, cooperative-economy efforts, educational programmes and key civil-rights events.

Her photographic archive spans several thousand images created in the 1960s and 1970s that focus on working-class Black communities, especially in the American South. Her work has been exhibited in national institutions, included in books on the civil-rights movement and published alongside her personal reflections and essays.
